Critic Reviews

"It's hard not to love a book dedicated to the Glee star's grandmother...Colfer gets off many good lines [and] the nifty ending ties the plot's multiple strands up while leaving room for further fairy tale adventures." (Publishers Weekly)

Poorly written, unpleasant voice

My daughter and I have listened to two titles of Colfer's and, to be blunt, neither are written well. Colfer's writing is full of clichés and the story has numerous plot holes, as other reviewers have noted. To make matters worse, Colfer's voice is unpleasant for an audiobook and his delivery is over the top and annoying.
Colfer is an accomplished actor known for his fine work in "Glee," and his name and TV fan base surely paved the way to publishing this stuff. His talents don't stretch into writing, unfortunately, except that he's very prolific. But then when you write at this quality, I suppose it's easy to produce this much content in a short amount of time. I suspect many of the glowing reviews here are from fans of his television work, and not true fans of the fantasy genre or fans of good writing and storytelling. That's fine. I wish Colfer continued success, but wish he'd focus on improving his writing and story development. Or at least hire a talented editor and a professional reader. As it is with this title, it's unedited high school level creative writing.

Magically wonderful

I really enjoyed listening to this on my drives home and when I needed to keep myself from falling asleep at work. It is well written and full of real problems that people face all over (with a magical twist of course.) I hope that others can enjoy this book as much as I have and continue to have hope and compassion for the future.

Extremely well performed!

Well written! Interesting story with some unexpected twists. Extremely well performed! I kept yelling “remember you can do magic” when the kids keep forgetting that they could. Had to remember that it was written about kids for kids. LOL

My daughter & I tried

The story is so basic and the narrator does not do a good job reading, we just can’t! We (my 14 year old & I) felt like we were back in 1st grade being read to by the librarian. We kept trying to go further than chapter 2 but we just can’t! Maybe for the primary grades it’d be fine but I feel like the political statement being pushed might not be appropriate for that age. Though teaching kids to accept each other for whom they are, is an excellent lesson, it’s just coming off as ...hmmm I don’t know, it just doesn’t feel right. I still wonder how on earth it got such great ratings and reviews 🤷🏽‍♀️

Amazing! Exciting!

I absolutely can not wait for the next book to come out! Well written, and read by the author! I can’t stand when the narrator of a book is bland and monotone, and Chris was anything but that! He put feeling and emotion into each character, and left me wanting more!
