Wealthy, beautiful, and brilliant, Shele Danishefsky had fulfillment at her fingertips. Having conquered Wall Street, she was eager to build a family with her much younger husband, promising Ivy League graduate Rod Covlin. But when his hidden vices surfaced, marital harmony gave way to a merciless divorce. Rod had long depended on Shele's income to fund his tastes for high stakes backgammon and infidelity - and she finally vowed to sever him from her will. In late December 2009, Shele made an appointment with her lawyer. She would never make it to that meeting.

Publisher's Summary
It was a bleak November in 2012 when Cari Lea Farver vanished from Omaha, Nebraska. Cari, 37, was a devoted mother, reliable employee, and loyal friend - not the type to shirk responsibilities, abandon her son, and run off on an adventure while her dying father took his last breaths. Yet, the many texts from her phone indicated she had done just that.
While Cari's boyfriend, Dave Kroupa, and her supervisor were bewildered by her abrupt disappearance, they accepted the texts at face value. Her mother, Nancy Raney, however, was alarmed and reported Cari missing. Police were skeptical of her claims that a cyber impostor had commandeered her daughter's phone and online identity.
While Nancy was afraid for Cari, Dave Kroupa was growing afraid of her, for he believed Cari was stalking him. Never seen or heard, the stalker was aware of his every move and seemed obsessed by his casual girlfriend, Shanna "Liz" Golyar, often calling her "a fat whore" in the 12,000 emails and texts he received in a disturbing three-year deluge.
There was some truth in the messages, but all of them contained one big lie. The culprit was not Cari - but had killed and planned to kill again.

Fished in
This book reminded me of all the crazy internet dating I did in the late 90s/early 2000s, and how close I came to being at the center of some awful story of my own. I was mesmerized by this insane crime -- so impossible to believe, no one considered what, with hindsight, must have seemed so obvious. Leslie Rule does a great job with this material. At first I was jarred by the repetitive, cumulative information given, but soon I felt I was in the middle of a real-time reenactment with all the crazy-making texts laid out like threads in an enormous red flag. Rule doesn't judge Dave, who is criminally clueless, so we can make judgements of our own. I enjoyed that too. These cyber-romances with their spice of psycho-drama, cowardly disclaimers and transparent manipulations used to happen all the time. Luckily, the killer in this story is a rarer breed. Let's hope there aren't too many more out there.

Unloving Lover
A Tangled Web is an excellent true crime book. Leslie Rule may well have proven she is as talented a writer as her mother, Ann Rule. She is able to take very tangled crimes and unwind it enough for the reader to grasp how evil the crimes were. I am very impressed and recommend this book.
The crimes in this account are heartless. Ms Rule makes that quite clear by introducing the reader to many of those who were impacted by the criminal. The nature of the crimes are such that this is not a very grizzly read. I was struck by the pain inflicted on so many people (not to mention the murder victim). It is hard to take in all the emotional pain the criminal caused. I was also very grateful that none of my loved ones were entangled by this nasty person.
If you prefer your true crime reads to begin with no idea who the perpetrator is, you may be disappointed with this book. I don’t have that pet peeve.
Tanya Eby, has a very pleasant voice and I would enjoy hearing more books narrated by her. She was tasked with portraying many male voices and there is little difference between characters. That is the only reason I gave the performance four stars. She definitely can deepen her voice and sound masculine, but with so many men to portray she could not vary the voices enough.

Meh
Definitely not her mother. While it could have been interesting material, it was repetitive and droned on. You knew who did it early on and the investigation wasn't taken up until almost the end. The prim and proper narration was grating. Made it to the end, but barely.

Great Book - your mom would be proud :)
Leslie Rule has a similar writing style to her mom in that they both like the reader to actually get to know the subjects of their books. I really enjoyed A Tangled Web and thought it was a very interesting read. The narration at times was really good, but at other times seemed sped up or robotic (kind of reminded me of my Roomba reading to me). This came and went throughout the book but wasn't so bothersome that I stopped listening or anything.

Leslie is NOT Ann Rule
True crime fans beware! If you like Ann Rule's work, do not be seduced into reading this train wreck of a book by her daughter. Leslie is one of the worst storytellers I've ever read. The book badly needs an editor. Her obsession with insignificant details and bizarre storylines makes for a snoozy and often confusing read. Unlike her brilliant mother, the author seems to lack the writing finesse that can take a bunch of facts and weave them into a coherent and readable story. I bailed out halfway because it was just such a dull and clumsily written book. Don't care what kind of ending she had planned because nothing would redeem what came before it. A great example of how often the apple falls many miles from the tree.

Good true story, but tedious telling at times
I'm an avid true crime reader including all Ann Rule and Olson books. I was interested in this story but it was painful at times the way Leslie Rule told it. It seemed like a lot of detail was disconnected and it was frustrating to get through.

Fascinating and bizarre
Leslie takes after her mother with this one. I kept seeing it come up as a suggestion and I was thinking it didn’t look that interesting. Then I decided to give it a try and wow! The narrator sounded much like an operator on a recorded phone tree at first, but as the book got more intense the narration got better. It was like the narrator was getting into the story with me. When it started I was not impressed with the narration. If you aren’t, don’t give up! I’m not going to get into all the details, you can read that in the summary. Basically it’s insane and fascinating!

Wow! It was excellent!
Sad story for the victim, and terrible emotional torture towards her family. This is a super crazy story with a horribly unlivable perpetrator. I was hooked throughout. Listened to all of the book in a 24 hour time period, 2 sittings.
Leslie Rule has incredible talent and a fresh writing style made for truly 1st class true crime. I think her mother would be incredibly proud.
Narrator is excellent, just a little too fast at times.
