Publisher's Summary

Linda lives on a nice, normal street.

She has a nice, normal husband and a nice, normal life.

But Linda isn’t entirely satisfied. And then the murders start....

From the bestselling author of The Trouble with Goats and Sheep and Three Things About Elsie, this is a compelling, sinister and perceptive novel about keeping yourself to yourself.

After all, the grass isn’t always greener. Especially if you’re six feet beneath it.

Critic Reviews

"Devastating, deceptive and darkly funny. Classic Cannon." (Sarah Winman)

‘A compellingly crafted, darkly funny and compulsive read, full of twists – and twists on twists – that keeps you guessing until the last page...a joy and a triumph." (Rachel Joyce)

"Compellingly creepy, with precisely observed characterisation, A Tidy Ending combines pathos with lovely ashes of humour and a wholly unexpected ending." (Guardian)

Approach with caution

This book should probably come with trigger warnings. I love JC’s previous books and have read them multiple times but I found this one really upsetting and it has given me nightmares. I persisted to the end in the hope that the resolution would improve things but it only made the situation worse! JC is a great writer and story-teller and I imagine lots of people will love this book but if you are disturbed by the worst aspects of human behaviour, please approach with caution. Reviews have described it as funny but it is very black humour, without the light, reassuring touch of her previous books.

Beautifully written, and brought to life by the narrator.

I really loved this book. It made me laugh at times, and sometimes made me sad. It also gave me a surprise. The author is so very perceptive, and there were many incidents and references which I could relate to and recognise. I have read Joanna Cannon’s other two novels, but I think I may listen to them as audio books, as a good narrator ( like this one) brings out nuances that can be overlooked. I’ve listened to a lot of poorly written books recently as fillers while I’m waiting for my next great listen, so when it comes along, I really do appreciate it. Thank you Joanna Cannon and Lissa Berry!

Persevere with it , it's so worth it

I struggled with this book and almost gave up a couple of times, but I have loved Joanna Cannons other books, so I persevered with it. Lissa Berry has the perfect voice for the main character. It was only towards the end of the book that I fully appreciated just how clever the writer is. It's making me want to reread it to pick up on things
I glossed over the first time. An Excellent listen.

Really great twist

Loved this book. Rather then feeling a story was being told, it felt like the character was sharing their very own story and day to day life.
The twists in the last few chapters can at pace and really made the whole book stand out.
Brilliant, think this is for audible rather than reading.

Quirky, kept me hooked

This has saved my Audible membership. I was ready to pack it in after a couple of duds, but this reminded me of how good it could be.
A Tidy Ending is beautifully written with clever dialogue which catches you by surprise: neighbours gather at the scene of the fourth victim - a good turn out, considering it was a Thursdsy; and Linda's constant awareness that once words left your mouth they could be changed.
I loved Linda and the narrator was perfect, although at times I felt her desperate grasping for a friend was laid on a bit too thick. And I am still not sure about Jolyon's inaction.
But overall it was an immensely intriguing, clever. enjoyable book.

very engaging

this is a really wlle plotted story. The protagonist is very convincing and likeable. Her relationship with the other characters ranges from pitiable to funny. I wouldn't say it's the most plausible of plots but, who cares, it kept me well entertained.
The narrator is perfect for the part, has a lovely voice combined with a slightly Welsh accent.
The ending didn't come as a total surprise because the writer drops a few crumbs of clues along the way
. definitely recommended and I'll be reading more of Joanna Cannon.

Great story and really well read!

I bought this book a couple of weeks ago and then a friend reviewed it and said it was awful. I had to read it! It’s a fantastic story, with wonderfully sculpted characters.

It is read beautifully as well throughout with a lovely Welsh accent which does not falter! There are elements of the main protagonists life and experience which certainly rang true for me! Excellent book though, and very good read indeed.

Great writing and fantastic narration

I loved this book, just as I loved the author’s previous novels. The main character Linda, is wonderfully done and her voice will stay with me for a long time. Although her life is full of sadness, she has this really purposeful, even upbeat, way of navigating her days and without spoiling the plot (I hope), there’s far more to her than meets the eye…. Thank you Joanna for a great story and Lissa, for bringing it to life.

Far more complex than it first appears

Pay attention! It is easy to be lulled into a false sense of familiarity with this book. Brilliant narration and fascinating characters.

Joanna Cannon

I absolutely loved this book.
The story was very well written, and the characters held me captivated until the very end.
