Publisher's Summary

Lou has always loved Hill House, the derelict manor on the abandoned land near her home. As a child, the tragic history of its owners, the Mandevilles, inspired her dream to become a history teacher. But in her late 20s, working in a shop to pay off student debts, life is passing her by.

That changes when a family disaster sends Lou’s life into a downward spiral and she seeks comfort in the ruined corridors of Hill House. The house transforms around her and she is transported back to Christmas 1913. Convinced she has been in an accident and is in a coma, Lou immerses herself in her Edwardian dream. With the Mandevilles oblivious to her true identity, she becomes their houseguest and befriends the eldest son, Captain Thomas Mandeville, a man she knows is destined to die in the First World War. Lou feels more at home in the past than the present and when she realises the experience is real she sets out to do everything in her power to save her new friends. She passes between 1913 and 2013, unearthing plots of murder and blackmail, which she must stop no matter the cost. On her quest to save the Mandevilles by saving Thomas, Lou will face the hardest decision of her life. She will learn that love cannot be separated by a century.

A book that you just don’t want to stop listening to

I must admit that I chose this book only because I had become tired of the series I was listening to. I am so glad I did. This book is a beautiful story beautifully read. The characters came alive and you found yourself wanting everything to work out for the family. It has been a long time since a book could make me cry as well as think of the consequences of our actions and those of others on history. I would thoroughly recommend this book if you want something that is a bit out of the ordinary but will keep your interested to the end

Not a HEA. Mad I wasted time

Spoilers

They don't end up together. He dies and she's alone. This sucks. Read a different book.

Lovely Story

I read a lot of time travel stories. This one was one of the best because it had a beautiful story. Langridge brought me into these people's lives and I loved every minute. When it was over, I wanted to just sit and think about the story and choices the characters made. I couldn't stop listening and, yet, wanted to draw it out at the end because I didn't want to leave the story behind.

Full of surprises!!

I have read many books from audible and many time travel books and this is one of the best. Usually I can predict what happens ahead of time and I did not with this one. Very good!!!

Intriguing story line!

Such a fun story with many elements of surprise, delightful characters, and an exciting story which switches seamlessly from one time frame to another. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series - can't wait to find out what next happens to these characters!

A story of love and loss

Loved this story. Finding out the next twist and turn became almost an addiction. Seeing how the main character's choices had consequences years later was such an engaging concept and not at all predictable. The narrator's voices were spot on in their variety. Thoroughly recommend.

The ending made me ugly cry

Very good book, grab some tissues for the ending. The author had a well planned out storyline that ties up in a neat little bow at the end. All the characters have depth and scenes are set up well. Wasn’t overly fond of the narrator but she still did a fine job. Personal preference I guess.

Great time travel story

This was a fantastic time-travel story that developed differently then the usual spin in this genre. The means of travel is initiated by the place i.e. the house itself. The character & plot development is also very deep, depicting the mood of the changing times before WW1 and the heroin's struggle to change events for the better. If you like your hero to have a happily ever after, you might get disappointed though. The ending is reflecting the realities of World War 1. It is nonetheless a very engaging read and the narrator does a fantastic job giving each character a distinct voice. I was a bit sad about the ending though - hence only 4 stars for the story.
