Critic Reviews

"Has everything you'd want in a retelling of a classic fairy tale: a finely-drawn fantasy world, a heroine rarely seen in fiction, and a tortured hero with a secret. I have only one complaint: I wish the sequel were already available!" (Jodi Picoult, New York Times best-selling author of A Spark of Light and Small Great Things, on A Curse So Dark and Lonely)

Should’ve Been a Stand-alone

I really loved the first book in the series and it even got me back into reading. However, I did not like the second book at all because I cannot stand Liamara, but the ending was really great and shocked me. This book was fine. It really felt like it dragged on. I thought *****’s death was unnecessary—as if she just killed someone because it was unrealistic for everyone to live. Well guess what: it’s fantasy and doesn’t have to be realistic.

I don’t regret reading this series. Overall it’s decent. However, I would seriously just recommend that you read the first book and stop there.

Good but...

Satisfying ending and I love that there is room for more..I’ve enjoyed this series!
The performance of Lia Mara was not to my liking. Someone it sounded like a whiny teen rather than a queen. I wish the voice actor was given better direction on this one!

All the feels and a mostly satisfying conclusion

Thoroughly enjoyed this series even if I found some of the characters to be a bit grating. I loved getting the perspective of all four main characters in this book. Kemmerer brought so much life and emotion to each of these characters and told the story in a way that nearly had me in tears at multiple points throughout the book. The ending did feel a bit rushed and I was left wanting a tad more to wrap it all up, but overall loved this conclusion and the series as a whole is an entertaining indulgence!

Disappointed

Waist of time. 2nd book and this book 3. All the author did was unravel all that was done in the first book. I wanted to love the book but I kinda hated it. Every choice and conversation the characters had just made me irritated... all I could think at times was SERIOUSLY?!! So yes, the first book I really enjoyed and I was anticipating the character building in the rest of the series, but as I said it wasn’t positive character building. It was pretty much pillaging and pulling down and making great characters out to be villains barley saved by a scrap of mercy at the end. The “good” characters seemed to have a victim persona and seemed self righteous justifying why they were so right to turn on friends that made “bad” choices. Sad thing is that I liked the first book so much that it took all the way up to the last page of book three to unravel all the good happy vibes. Disappointed. I enjoyed the voice acting except for “good” perfect little cherry on top princess, she sounded annoying, whiny, or just so mushy happy squeaky, it was just over done... although as I listened I didn’t necessarily think that was all the voice actors fault it was just calmative of the script and personality little miss perfect princess was given. Honestly from the standpoint of the first book I felt betrayed for some of the characters.

Loved it

Great series! Grateful for a happy close :) I wish I knew it was a trilogy when I started because I had to wait for the last book.
