Publisher's Summary

She tried to tell her friends. She even went to the police. No one would believe her - and now she was dead.

Problems had always followed Susan White, but when she remarried and moved to Houston's posh suburbs, she thought the past was behind her - until she met a deputy sheriff named Kent McGowen who would soon become her worst nightmare.

McGowen was an aggressive cop with a spotty record. When Susan rebuffed his advances, she claimed he stalked and harassed her, using her troubled teenage son as bait. And then, in an act of arrogance and revenge, he made good on his threats, setting her up for the kill.

In A Warrant to Kill, Kathryn Casey meticulously pieces together the tragic shards of the case to create a riveting story of vengeance, fear, and justice - of the terrifying power a badge can have in the wrong hands.

Really well written

From a clinical background I really enjoyed the information on the characters’ backgrounds. It gave depth to the characters. This was the first book that I read from this author and I would definitely get another one. As with most narrators after an hour or two of listening I barely notice their voices anymore. I did not have any immediate negative reactions to this narrator.

Power meets Chaos

What did you like best about A Warrant to Kill? What did you like least?

I am a big fan of Kathryn Casey's writing - she has filled in the gaps Ann Rule has created as of late. This is one of Kathryn Casey's first books, and the writing is uneven and seems to spell out things unnecessarily. That being said, all good authors start somewhere, and this is by no means a bad book. The narrator was very good.

Any additional comments?

One of the things I like about kathryn Casey's true crime books is that she will generally outline the whole story, warts and all. Susan White was a tragic victim of a killer cop, perhaps because of the way she started out by staunchly defending her troubled son. As a result of the chaotic way she lived her life, she became a mark for a cop who sought nothing by power.

This is a worthy edition to true crime libraries, though better books of Casey's include newer offerings: A Descent into Hell, Deadly Little Secrets.

Interesting characters, very well researched

The book kept my attention as I drove but I felt it dragged. I hadn’t read any of her books. I’ll give another one a try since she comes so highly recommended by Ann Rule—my favorite true crime author.

ACAB

Kent McGowen is exactly where he belongs. My only regret is that he didn’t get life without parole. Susan wasn’t perfect but she didn’t deserve to be cut down by a piece of crap like McGowen.

Great book but seems to be missing parts

I’ve read the book and the audiobook version seems to be missing parts of the story. Still enjoyed it and would recommend though.

Great book and narration.

Very good True Crime book, though I was annoyed by things that were left out of the trial. I come from a law background, so I understood that victim statements were hearsay, but it was still infuriating that it works like this in cases where there is harassment and stalking. It was evident that the judge was pro-defense. That made me angry as well. This is one of the craziest murders and I was thankful there was some justice at the end.

Kathryn Casey has become one of my favorite true crime authors. This is the 4th book I’ve read of hers. The narrator was amazing. Excellent audio book experience.

Kept my attention

Hard to listen to the story because of how much the mother enabled her son. She made so many excuses for him. Also she called him her baby boy, yuck. He’s a 17 year old punk. I feel bad for Susan, no one deserves what happened to her. And that McGowan is an evil creep. Thankfully he was found guilty.

Some Unanswered Questions

Overall I liked this book but I wish we had more background on that lunatic who somehow got to wear a badge.

For starters- why did he hate women so much?

I found it interesting that McGowen appears to have been parented in much the same way as Susan's son ( my son can do no wrong ). Whenever I see this situation it appears that while they think it's about the child it's really about the parents. Maybe to admit your kid isn't perfect shows something lacking in you? I don't know. But it's weird thinking. Kids never benefit from having no accountability.

I got so frustrated by Susan's lack of proper parenting and the smugness of this cop. I wanted to slap him throughout the book.

What a sad story though. This murder should never have happened. Susan may have had her issues but certainly nothing that she had to die for.

Narrator was great.

I was given this book at no cost in exchange for an honest review. Thank you.

Unnerving!

Well-written from different points of view to culminate in the total picture of the crime.
Hats off to all of the honest police that put their lives on the line for us.

Melanie Haynes did a good job narrating.

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
