The story of Hong Kong has long been dominated by competing myths: to Britain, a “barren rock” with no appreciable history; to China, a part of Chinese soil from time immemorial, at last returned to the ancestral fold. For decades, Hong Kong’s history was simply not taught, especially to Hong Kongers, obscuring its origins as a place of refuge and rebellion.

Angela Merkel has always been an outsider. A pastor’s daughter raised in Soviet-controlled East Germany, she spent her twenties working as a research chemist, entering politics only after the fall of the Berlin Wall. And yet within fifteen years, she had become chancellor of Germany and, before long, the unofficial leader of the West. In this “masterpiece of discernment and insight” (The New York Times Book Review), acclaimed biographer Kati Marton sets out to pierce the mystery of Merkel’s unlikely ascent.

Every day we experience the uncertainty, risks, and emotional exposure that define what it means to be vulnerable or to dare greatly. Based on 12 years of pioneering research, Dr. Brené Brown dispels the cultural myth that vulnerability is weakness and argues that it is, in truth, our most accurate measure of courage. Brown explains how vulnerability is both the core of difficult emotions like fear, grief, and disappointment, and the birthplace of love, belonging, joy, empathy, innovation, and creativity.

Publisher's Summary
"Warm, honest and true - A Woman Makes a Plan is full of insight as well as a good dose of humor, offering readers a lifetime of hard-won advice." (Diane Von Furstenberg)
The international supermodel shares personal stories and lessons learned from a life of "living dangerously - carefully"
Maye Musk is a fashionable, charming, jet-setting supermodel with a fascinating and tight-knit circle of family and friends - and is 71 years old. But things were not always so easy or glamorous - she became a single mom at 31, struggling through poverty to provide for her three children; dealt with weight issues as a plus-size model and overcame ageism in the modeling industry; and established a lifelong career as a respected dietitian, all the while starting over in eight different cities across three countries and two continents. But she made her way through it all with an indomitable spirit and a no-nonsense attitude to become a global success at what she calls the "prime of her life."
As everyone who follows her obsessively on social media knows, Maye is a fount of frank and practical advice on how the choices you make in every decade can pay off in surprising, exciting ways throughout your life. In A Woman Makes a Plan, Maye shares experiences from her life conveying hard-earned wisdom on career (the harder you work, the luckier you get), family (let the people you love go their own way), health (there is no magic pill), and adventure (make room for discovery, but always be ready for anything). You can't control all that happens in life, but you can have the life you want at any age. All you have to do is make a plan.
Critic Reviews
"I have long admired Maye Musk as both a model and a woman. She has inspired so many throughout her career, and her invaluable wisdom and insight come to life on each page of this book." (Karlie Kloss)

An amazing gift for the new decade!
Listening to Maye Musk read her newest book, “A Woman Makes a Plan,” is like a long call from a dear friend, full of the best advice. Sharing the difficulties she faced, rebuilding her life again and again until she succeeded beyond what she imagined as a supermodel at age 69, a successful speaker, and now best-selling author.
Maye Musk humbly and generously shares her life as a single working mom with three young children just a year apart in age. She shares how she finally escaped a physically and emotionally abusive husband, all while moving to new cities and new countries to begin again.
Readers will gain some insight into how she grew her nutrition counseling business (in two countries!) And, how she, her children, and many others helped each other along the way.
Maye’s childhood was filled with adventure, which is how the family came to live in South Africa. After listening to a bit of the audio, I knew I needed to own the book (it has color photos embedded in the pages and is a delight to hold in the hand), and I bought the electronic version so I could take notes for reference.
There were times my eyes tears up and many moments I laughed out loud:
While counseling an acquaintance who lost her job, Maye asked her what she had done about it.
“She sent it out to the universe to provide. I said, sending out a resume could be better.”
This book is a delightful read and no doubt will make an exciting adventure movie. For those in a bad situation, reading Maye Musk’s book, “A Woman Makes a Plan,” will give you the courage to begin again.

mixed bag
I'm reminded of the movie Better Off Dead where Monique "teaches" how to ski by saying something like, "Go downhill very fast, and if something gets in your way: turn." Maye's "guidance" is over-simplified and generalized to a fault where most of the book is appropriate for middle schoolers. That being said, I enjoyed her anecdotes very much. I gave 4 stars for performance due to her voice not having much animation; it's rather robotic, even in the few humorous parts.

Must read
Yes, I picked up this book because it’s Elon’s Mum. What does it take to raise a genius? Apparently good genes but love and support brings genius to it’s full potential and realization. I’ve learnt about living dangerously carefully, taking chances, being a better mom, being a better person. Being fearless is stupid. Overcoming your fears is what makes you fierce. This woman is remarkable! She is intelligent, straightforward, beautiful inside and outside.
“A woman makes a plan” is refreshingly honest and humorous. A lovely read that endears you to the writer and her family.

Maye Musk is 100% authentic in her story. The fact that she’s narrating the book adds extra credibility. I was expecting more hard nosed business and strategy information and insight on her world famous son, Elon. But instead Maye gives real life accounts and tidbits for succeeding at any age.

Wonderful, just wonderful! No nonsense, genuine, heartfelt advice from a woman worth looking up too. Her accounts of trauma as a young woman I found extremely relatable and her story of how she overcame them is inspiring. I feel like the daily angst I was feeling about my life being ruined already and now I was just getting older and heading downhill have been transformed. I feel lighter, happier and more optimistic. Thank you so much for sharing. We may never meet, but I feel like I have another mother in my pysche - a bright light and a warm glow of hope and love to get me through the dark times, and laugh with me through the joyful ones. A very inspirational story. I highly recommend this for any woman afraid to start a new life & needing a confidence boost whilst wanting to read an entertaining story to divert their sad emotions.

It’s Okay
I admire Maye for her progress (her diet is interesting for a dietician).
But this advice is for people in their 70s.
I feel sad for her that she’s never been able to find love. But when you compromise yourself to keep the person you are with happy then love will remain elusive.
Not the book for me.

Inspiring ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
As a young woman I found this book to be raw, detailed and inspirational. It encompasses, at times, brutal honesty with the encouragement to keep going on with life -even if it’s not what you initially had planned. This is a fantastic audio book because the authors voice is also very soothing and calming. “It’s better to be interesting than beautiful” -Maye Musk.

An Inspiring Book for Anyone
It's not surprising Maye Musk's children are all high achievers, having learned from the best "overcomer" never to give up. This woman is inspiring on so many levels and makes me much less afraid of the decades to come. Like Maye, I hope to make my best years the ones that are ahead of me.

Thank you Maye Musk
I listened to your book and could see myself in a lot of your ideas and thoughts. Also born in 1948, but still feeling like I’m in my 40’s your philosophy is the same as mine. My mother always taught me “waste not, want not”. I think that came from living through a World war when you really appreciated everything you had.
Thank you Maye, you have truly lifted my Spirits.
