Publisher's Summary

Rookie detective Anna Travis has been assigned to her first murder case - a series of killings that has shocked even the most hardened on the force. Over the past eight years there have been six victims - all women from similar backgrounds, all killed in an identical way. Then a seventh body is found, but this one doesn't fit the pattern.

Anna is determined to earn the respect of her male colleagues, and find justice for the victims, but when a vital piece of information links a high-profile suspect to the killings she is faced with a difficult choice. As a figure in the public eye, his arrest would cause a media frenzy. But if he is innocent, Anna's hard-fought-for reputation would be destroyed once and for all.

Loved the book

It's always a great joy to discover a new writer: in particular a writer of thrillers. I already tremendously enjoyed the D.C Jack Warr series, but unfortunately, there aren't more published on Audible as yet.
So Anna Travis captivated me for hours although DCI J. Langton is hard to endure at times. The book dragged on a bit towards the end, but I still enjoyed it and recommend it. The narrator is doing a great job, too.
I was so looking forward to book 2 in the series although there was a warning review already. And yes, book too is cobbled together in a shoddy or hasty way in comparison. (Template?) Repetitions abound as regards language as well as facts. Without giving too much away: it's very similar to book 1. The serial killer is yet another guy from a privileged background who thinks he can get away with murder- literally. So for the first time, I decided not to endure the remaining 4 hours of this book. Pity. It will be a while until I buy another LaPlante book.

Exciting story!

This is a very unique police procedural. It has a different vibe from most I read due to the DS being new and trying to prove herself. Anna is an interesting character and the story is smart. Despite some clues being easy to deduce before the detectives, this kept me engaged. I could do without Anna pining for her grumpy boss but I’ll take it because the rest of the story was smart and well done. I’m excited to have found a new series!

Impossible To Put Down

Since taking an interest in Lynda La Plante's works in 2021 I had heard quite a lot about the Anna Travis Series but unfortunately couldn't find any of the books in the series available on Audible so imagine my delight when in August 2022 I noticed the whole series is now available. With four credits I got the first four in the series and have just finished Above Suspicion which is the first book. A number of girls have been raped and killed but then Melissa Stevens, a young student, is killed and the pattern for this murder is different to the others so Anna Travis is drafted into the Murder Squad when DCI James Langton hears that she is the daughter of a former colleague, Jack Travis who would stop at nothing to bring a killer to justice. Thus begins a serial killer thriller that is impossible to put down. Despite two comments I noticed where it was felt that the narration wasn't good at all, I took a gamble through reading all the other reviews which were more positive and went for the first four books. Having listened to the series I agreed with the majority of the reviews that Kristin Atherton was an excellent reader. The book took me two days to finish and that was with long periods of listening. So if you're new to Lynda La Plante, I certainly recommend that you either start with this one or Prime Suspect. You will be kept enthralled and won't be able to put it down until the very end I promise you.

Great series.

Revisiting this series again after reading it a number of years a go. Think this is a great series and although you know who the killer is quite early on it mainly focuses on the investigation and finding the evedance to prove it. Anna is a very determined character and does all she can to make sure the killer is caught. She is very compassionate when interviewing victoms family members. I love how Lynda la plante takes us through the stages of the investigation so we can see how it all comes together.

Had To Return, Awful Narration

Narration was awful, couldn’t listen any longer and had to return The rhythm of speech was all wrong and male characters irritating to listen to. It was very distracting and prevented me from becoming absorbed into the story.

Excruciating delivery made it a really tough listen

I’m genuinely surprised by the reviews (there is also another version on audible with a different narrator).
The book was ok, a few holes in it that makes me wonder if enough basic research/editing was conducted.
However, the biggest issue was the appalling narration. All male characters were either 1950s ‘northern’ (if they weren’t from London) or extremely angry with every line delivered. The main male character was so poorly portrayed that it became impossible to listen to at times.

Gripping Storytelling

Gripping storyline that was well narrated. Looking forward to the next book in the series.
