Mr. Hood's Holiday House has stood for 1,000 years, welcoming countless children into its embrace. It is a place of miracles and blissful rounds of treats and seasons, where every childhood whim may be satisfied.… There is a price to be paid, of course, but young Harvey Swick, bored with his life and beguiled by Mr. Hood's wonders, does not stop to consider the consequences. It is only when the House shows it's darker face - when Harvey discovers the pitiful creatures that dwell in its shadows - that he comes to doubt Mr. Hood's philanthropy.

Story
The Barbarossa family’s roots are far more ancient and ethereal, but they are bound to the Gearys by a shared history of murder, insanity, and adultery. When Rachel Geary and Galilee, the seductive prince of the Barbarossa clan, fall in love, they unleash powerful enmities that could destroy both dynasties. Shorter and more conventional than some of Barker’s other work, this novel is especially rich with complex, passionate, three-dimensional characters, lush settings, and elegant language.

Chiliad consists of two interrelated stories, stories filtered through the melancholy imagination of a narrator perched on the banks of a river that flows backward and forward through time. The first movement, "Men and Sin", takes place in the millennial year of 1000 AD. The second, "A Moment at the River's Heart", occurs exactly 1000 years - the length of a "chiliad" - later, as the new millennium approaches.

A real review after having fully read this book
- By Chuck on 09-27-21
By: Neil Gaiman, and others
Publisher's Summary
“'I know that many of you here have waited years for this Hour,'” Mater Motley said, using that voice that, though it was barely conversational in volume, was somehow heard everywhere. 'The waiting is over. Tomorrow there will be no dawn. Only midnight, absolute and eternal.'”
And so begins a new chapter in the epic story of 16-year-old Candy Quackenbush and her journeys through the world of the Abarat, where every hour is an island in one eternal day, and nothing is as it seems.
Candy travels through the Abarat from island to island and across the sea with an unlikely band of friends: the escaped prisoner Malingo the Geshrat; the quarrelsome John Brothers, who all share the same body but never the same opinion; and the many other colorful characters they meet along the way.
The problem is that trouble finds Candy wherever she goes. And soon she discovers a secret plot, masterminded by the diabolical Mater Motley, who is obsessed with becoming Empress of the Islands. Her method is simple. She will darken the skies, putting out the suns, moons, and stars. She will bring absolute midnight.

BARKER gets DARKER
What did you love best about Abarat: Absolute Midnight?
The unique characters & the vastly strange and mind bending cosmic evil - all put into motion by one of the most evil witches in all fantasy/horror. Clive once again creates a totally alien fantasy world with so rich with so many things you've never seen or heard of before - yet again. He seems to be a door way to alternate realities. His visions are starting to rival H. P. Lovecraft for sheer "otherness". Something 99.9 % of all horror writers can not do. How does he come up with this endless dark fantasy? Makes one wonder... and more than wonder.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Abarat: Absolute Midnight?
The great evil witch battles the great evil sea creature form the darkest depths of the ocean. Sheer insanity in it's power and unique strange visions. This takes a fantasy novel way beyond a children's book. Harry Potter seems like a dull uninspired old re-do of such tired old over-told stories compared to Clive's brain warping alien worlds. The scene actually makes you doubt your sanity it's so bizarre.
Have you listened to any of Richard Ferrone’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
The guy's a chorus of voices.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
with out goiving a spoiIer - I enjoyed some characters surprise turn around in values.
Any additional comments?
Is this a children's story? Is this a replacement of Harry Potter? Perhaps it is the next step into deeper magical worlds not nearly so tame as Harry Potter. It may start in a more safe fantasy world, but by the time we reach this book, Clive has taken us far far down the dark rabbit hole... into H. P. Lovecraft like cosmic darkness. I would not let small children read this book. But it brings out the best in childhood nightmare worlds in adults.

It’s ok, but....
There are gaps in the recording. Mater Motley’s battle with Pixler is cut off in mid-sentence and picks up in the middle of Candy’s narrative omitting some useful exposition. I’ll change my rating if the technical difficulties are ironed out.

Barker's DONE IT AGAIN!
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes! Abarat is a journey of imagination everybody should enjoy :)
Who was your favorite character and why?
John Mischief and his brothers. He makes me laugh.
What does Richard Ferrone bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Great pace and suspense building, and Barker has an extensive vocabulary that Ferrone perfectly articulates.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I wanted to go to the Abarat because of this book, that's probably extreme.
Any additional comments?
Yea, make this into a motion picture. That would be the BEST.

Another Great Entry in the Abarat Series
Having been a Clive Barker fan since I read his Books of Blood as an early teen, I am always eager to dive into one of his book. This is the third book in his Abarat series, and it does not disappoint. The story builds on the events in the second book of the Abarat, and it becomes increasingly darker as Mater Motley achieves her goal of Absolute Midnight. In addition, she becomes more and more evil and closer to becoming the Empress of the Abarat. Candy Quackenbush--who continues to be the central character--has to rely on more than just her intuition to step up to these new challenges.

Oh No!
Oh goodness, it pained me greatly to put down anything lower than a solid 5 out of 5 for one of my favorite series since middle school. I remember expressing to a friend that I was actually afraid of reading the third novel because I had grown so close and attached to the first two, I was set in what I knew of the characters. If they changed from how I understood them to act and react to circumstances, I wasn't sure how I could handle the conflict, but I would have overcome the confusion ONLY if the novel possessed the same tone that I had grown used to.
Unfortunately, I was immediately put on guard. From the first chapter, something felt off, like I really wasn't in the same Abarat I had been in for so many years. I can't put a finger on anything specific other than some of the characters seemed to have given a trait lift. They were just at juxtaposition to their counterparts in the previous two renditions. I can dismiss Candy's odd behavior for plot reasons, but that doesn't excuse others. The whole feel was menacing and angry, and I understand that the entirety of the plot was to gear up for a war between two great powers, but even the good guys were growling and barking at each other. In turn, I was a tad uneasy.
There were pieces of plot left not only from the other two novels (like Letheo being absent,) but from the beginning of "Absolute Midnight." There were no resolutions that were promised from prior text other than Mater Motely achievement of her goals. There weren't the appropriate repercussions for certain activities from others, and that drove me mad!
And don't get me started on love interests. I'm of the opinion that there's no need for any. Yes, I can see connections for some characters, but I feel as if the addition of a teenage romance is unnecessary for this tale of a young woman finding strength within herself to overcome obsticales.
In any case, after a few rereads, I've come to just be alright with the third novel. As usual, the writing is poetic, the paintings are mystical, and I'm still addicted to the Abarat. I just hope the fourth addition makes up for the third.

Another Great Story to continue the Abarat
Another beautiful addition to the Abarat saga. Sad I'll have to wait for Book 4 - but I'm more than willing ; )
The narrator did a wonderful job. His passion shone through his reading.
The only reason I cut a star from the story - is because Clive Barker seems to sometimes skip some of the most important realisations his characters (namely Candy) make about themselves. Or he breezes over it like it's not important. Left me wanting more in parts.
