Publisher's Summary

In this hilarious and heartfelt memoir, award-winning, multi-talented entertainer Jamie Foxx shares the story of being raised by his no-nonsense grandmother, the glamour and pitfalls of life in Hollywood, and the lessons he took from both worlds to raise his two daughters.

Jamie Foxx has won an Academy Award and a Grammy Award, laughed with sitting presidents, and partied with the biggest names in hip-hop. But he is most proud of his role as father to two very independent young women, Corinne and Anelise. Jamie might not always know what he’s doing when it comes to raising girls - especially when they talk to him about TikTok (PlikPlok?) and don’t share his enthusiasm for flashy Rolls Royces - but he does his best to show up for them every single day.

Luckily, he has a strong example to follow: his beloved late grandmother, Estelle Marie Talley. Jamie learned everything he knows about parenting from the fierce woman who raised him: As he puts it, she’s “Madea before Tyler Perry put on the pumps and the gray wig”.

In Act Like You Got Some Sense - a title inspired by Estelle - Jamie shares up close and personal stories about the tough love and old-school values he learned growing up in the small town of Terrell, Texas; his early days trying to make it in Hollywood; the joys and challenges of achieving stardom; and how each phase of his life shaped his parenting journey. Hilarious, poignant, and always brutally honest, this is Jamie Foxx like we’ve never seen him before.

Critic Reviews

"In this debut full of genuine reflection and heartfelt humor, actor and comedian Foxx riffs on parenting ('You ain’t ready for it') and the life experiences that gradually helped shape him as a father.... Foxx writes in a jovial manner, with jokes flying constantly.... Yet where this book truly excels is in its honesty, offering an intimate look past Jamie Foxx the famous actor to reveal a relatable figure." (Publishers Weekly, starred review)

"A practical, sometimes profane, always entertaining guide to the fine art of parenting." (Kirkus Reviews)

"In cheerfully meandering stories, Foxx displays his comedic timing and pacing and is always entertaining, blending the folksy yet hard-edged wisdom of his adoptive grandmother with hard-won, more worldly 'New Dad' sensibilities.... Foxx's parenting-advice book is the equivalent of a vitamin-packed smoothie: sweet, fun, and easy to enjoy, full of slyly concealed nourishment and goodness." (Booklist)

This is a great movie with no picture

I love the way Jamie narrated this book because he acted out every chapter which made it magical. Especially the voices he does. It was like watching a movie with no picture. That’s the true actor within him. Awesome book 🤩🤗

Amazing Dad stories

It's inspiring how Jamie allowed us a look into his journey thus far. His stories with finding how to parent each daughter differently was refreshing. We know all people struggle with parenting but when you see someone always "put together" you think they have everything in order. Well not Jamie and he is so willing to let you know how he messed up and grew from it.

Jamie Foxx has a book!!

Jamie gives a inside look of what fatherhood look like for him.. while somewhat giving a glimpse into his private life.. he manages to bring out a mixture of emotions.. The sharing of Annalise poetry was a true gift.. I found myself wanting to read more.. There seems to be so much depth to Jamie that I longed for in this book... but it is a good read.. check it out.

Life lessons without the beat down!

Highly recommend. Loved the book. Finished in one day while knocking off my to do list. Had to rewind a few times or restart a few chapters because I didn't want to miss a word. Much respect to his grandmother who not just raised him, but raised him up! She gave him just enough security, love and respect, empathy and wisdom, drive and courage, physical and mental skills to give him the chance to succeed in life and help others do the same. The man is a thinker, and not just the crazy idea having kind, although he's had a few. Now, he's passing it on by teaching his daughter's how to think wisely for themselves, and now the general public. Thanks for sharing Foxes!

Practical for any parent

Jamie beautifully told his story whole being very open and vulnerable. This would be a book that I would like to do a club topic on with other parents because of the way he laid out his experiences.

Loved it

I was delighted to find this book. Even more delighted to listen. The only disappointment was that it ended to soon. I want to hear more. I saw so much of my own life with my father and my son woven into the anecdotes shared in this book. I experienced a full range of emotions all of them tempered with humor.

Thank you.

p.s. I will be signing on with my own account. Looking forward to binge-watching the entire season.

Jamie Fox is an awesome dad!

I loved this whole book! Especially the fact that Mr Fox read it himself!
Embarrassing our children is what it’s all about. It’s our God given right, right? However, one day when they become adults, they really do understand. Hanging out with my adult children & seeing how much they’ve accomplished makes this momma happy! And just wait, grandparenting takes the cake!!! We have one & she is the best! Thank you, again, for writing such an open & honest book. Now I’m off to watch “Dad! Stop embarrassing me” on Netflix (which I pay for 😘).
