Publisher's Summary

Eli Bennett: quarterback at our biggest rival high school and my brother’s worst enemy. So why can’t I stop thinking about him?

For one, he’s totally gorgeous, and boy, does he know it. He’s an arrogant trash talker who brings drama wherever he goes. And for some reason, he’s set his sights on me.

The more I get to know him, the more I realize he’s actually kind of...sweet. Deep down, he’s broken. Hurting. He’s dealing with a lot, but he also puts on a major front so no one can tell. I want to be there for him. I want to be with him. But because everyone in my life hates Eli, we have to keep our relationship a secret.

The problem with secrets is they never stay secret for long....

Not my favorite

Some parts of this book were difficult for me. That boy doesn't need a girlfriend; he needs therapy.

Fantastic sport romance

I loved reading Eli and Ava's story, I need the next book to find what happens next, this story will get you hooked from the beginning and you just need to keep on reading until the end. Definitely one fantastic YA book to read. All the angst, drama, and simply fantastic characters. Waiting for the next one! Narration is remarkably good.

Good Continuation but ends in a cliffhanger

It was nice to get the other side of the story after Jake's. The ending is a bit disappointing and ends in a cliffhanger but the next is out so you can hop right to it. Story is told well though the back and forth gets a little over drawn out but overall it's a good story and the narration is done well.

hated the "conquest" storyline

i couldn't finish. A very early chapter was too reminiscent of rape culture.
Worse yet a supposed feminist female lead succumbed when the handsome male lead who overpowered her in bed without any form of consent.

Well crud…

Good story by Murphy, BUT it ends in a cliffhanger! NOT what I like! Gotta start the next which hopefully ends the story. I also REALLLLLLLLY have a problem with the female narrator’s male voices. They distract from the enjoyment, almost making it comical when the males sound like pre-puberty adolescents.

brings back memories of high school as lived...

... vicariously through others. It was vivid & realistic and for once not the predictable romance ending. I hope the story continues.

Condoned teen sexual assault! crude & juvenile

The most blatantly offensive part that stands out is the teen sexual assault that the author appears to sweep under the rug as boys being boys. By chapter 7 there are two unconsensual sexual encounters involving inappropriate touching & restraint ... bordering on attempted rape! Honestly, does no one from Blackstone or Audible not read the books content? The victim is 15! and the criminal is 17! What the heck that is not coming of age .

Besides that section, the entire book is so poorly written It was a struggle to wade through the constant clichés and mindnumbingly trite dialog. The story & characters lack depth. Full disclosure I checked my aidible history and found I haven't enjoyed this author in my past.

Narration was rough too. I am usually a fan of Teddy but casting his very mature voice was a misstep for this 16y/o teenager. The real problem is the female actress who sounds like a 5th grader and drops the last word in each sentence a few seconds after what sounds like a full stop.
On top of all that it is a cliffhanger ending.

I'm shocked someone published this rag.

Textbook emotionally abusive relationship

The lead male character is so abusive and borderline rape-y. This type of relationship is not what teens should be made to view as normal.

Conflicted

I’m conflicted over the young age of the characters and the toxic relationship they have.
The story was ok, a little repetitive, but even though I continued listening, I was more intrigued with the problem between Eli and Jake.

Oh no, no, no

Very early on this gets super-worrying. Don't sell young people the idea that this is romance, please. Do better.

Give it a chance

So I started this book but gave up when it was about high schoolers. Then came back to it and absolutely loved it! Can’t wait for the rest of the series!! The narration is also fab!

Fabulous start to Eli’s and Ava’s story

I’ve just read the follow up to this book and realised I had forgotten to review this one first 😊
This is a great introduction to these young adult characters, but their attraction and interaction is definitely adult themed 🔥🔥🔥
Lots of chemistry and sweet realistic moments we can all sympathise with.
Some good LOL moments and enough twists and turns to keep it interesting. Realistic themes and a very enjoyable listen. Great narration too👍
Would highly recommend and definitely recommend the follow up story ‘ Meant to Be’
Top marks ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

WOW

Holy Canolli...
I feel heartbroken for them right now.
That was intense!

Ava and Eli were beautiful, until they weren't.

The narration by Sarah and Teddy was fabulous.
