Publisher's Summary

“Full of juicy, concrete advice to heal from an affair.” (Esther Perel, MA, LMFT, New York Times best-selling author of Mating in Captivity and The State of Affairs)

From a clinical psychologist who served as a clinical supervisor in the Department of Psychology at Yale University, received the CPA’s award for Distinguished Contribution to the Practice of Psychology, and has treated couples and trained therapists for over four decades, this newly updated, award-winning book provides concrete, proven strategies for those who seek to survive their partner’s infidelity and to rebuild the relationship after an affair.

There is nothing quite like the devastation caused when a partner has been unfaithful. Hurt partners often experience a profound shattering of their familiar and valued sense of self and fall into a depression that can last for years. For the relationship, infidelity is often a death blow.

This new third edition of After the Affair, with more than 600,000 copies sold, helps guide both hurt and unfaithful partners through three stages of healing: normalizing the crisis, deciding whether to recommit to their partner, and rekindling trust and sexual intimacy. It includes a new section in which patients ask questions not addressed in previous editions, and the author provides concrete strategies for earning trust and forgiveness.

Hard but helpful

This book was recommended by my therapist and it was incredibly difficult to read. Not because of the writing but because it was needed for such a terrible and heartbreaking reason. I'm looking for help and this book gave that. It also gave hope. Narrator was excellent. I would also recommend picking up a physical copy of the book as reference. I wouldn't wish the need for this book on anyone, but if you find yourself looking for help and answers, try it out.

A lot of cute stories

… And very little real advice. Each time a topic is introduced, she goes into series of examples, and one loses interest after the 3rd or 4th story is told…

Excellent overview for healing after an affair

I chose this book because I'm a clinician who treats couples who are recovering after an affair. It helped me understand the huge swatch of situations couples can face and the ways they can work through them. Wonderfully written and very thorough. Thank you for your masterful work on this topic.

Helpful, informative, neutral.

This book covers a lot of ground around affairs. Appreciate it is not religious based and provides alternative perspectives.

Too much drama

I bought two different books on helping partners overcome infidelity. The other book was “getting past the affair”. I highly recommend the other book over this one- unless you’re interest is in listening to a women dramatise your life, hurt you more and offer little help.
