Publisher's Summary

From New York Times best-selling author Clare Mackintosh comes a deeply moving and addictive novel about an impossible choice - and the two paths fate could take.

“A beautifully written novel, compelling and clever, tender and true. I can’t stop thinking about it.” (Liane Moriarty, best-selling author of Big Little Lies

“Tailor-made for book clubs and for fans of Jodi Picoult.” (Publishers Weekly

Max and Pip are the strongest couple you know. They're best friends, lovers - unshakable. But then their son gets sick and the doctors put the question of his survival into their hands. For the first time, Max and Pip can't agree. They each want a different future for their son.

What if they could have both?

A gripping and propulsive exploration of love, marriage, parenthood, and the road not taken, After the End brings one unforgettable family from unimaginable loss to a surprising, satisfying, and redemptive ending and the life they are fated to find. With the emotional power of Jodi Picoult's My Sister's Keeper, Mackintosh helps us to see that sometimes the end is just another beginning.

Critic Reviews

"Medical ethics and familial bonds are tested in Clare Mackintosh’s After the End.... Expertly told...[with] a ray of hope at the end." (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette)

“Clare Mackintosh’s complex, riveting page-turner grapples with hard questions without ever straying from its emotional true north. I fell in love with the compelling voices of Pip, Max, and Leila as they explored the bravest and most terrifying words in the English language: What if. After the End is gorgeous, heart-wrenching, hope-soaked, and honest. It made me feel a thousand things, and it also made me think. Get an extra copy for a friend; you’re going to need to talk about this one.” (Joshilyn Jackson, New York Times best-selling author of Never Have I Ever

"Clare Mackintosh’s After the End is absolutely compulsive reading, a heart-pounding family story with a child’s life in the balance. So skilled is this author, that, just when the reader thinks there is no possible resolution, another door opens. You may think you’ve experienced medical drama before, but you haven’t, not this way.” (Jacquelyn Mitchard, New York Times best-selling author of The Deep End of the Ocean)

Depressing

I understood that the story would be sad and depressing. How could you not be sad about a child with terminal cancer and the decisions that the family must make and consequences they endure. But this went on and on with never an upbeat, positive moment until the very end. I almost turned it off in the middle because I just couldn’t take any more but kept hoping it would draw me back in.

Another fantastic book to listen to.

I have listened to all of Clare Mackintosh's books and I have loved every single one of them. Her books are always relevant and she puts her own personal experiences in them, so it's the real deal. It is heart wrenching but positive.

I always love that her narrators are always absolutely spot on for the novel.

I actually think she is my favourite author.

Wow! I am still absorbing this...Order Now!

I love this author and pre-ordered the book without hesitation. I had no idea what the topic was and was amazed with the eloquent way everyone's opinion was heard and how the story unfolded. It is a beautiful read and a tribute to a situation that we hope never to be in. I highly recommend this book. It moved me in so many ways and by the end was uplifting and makes me think long past the ending.

Heartbreakingly Inspiring...Beautiful

I came to find Clare Mackintosh through her previous three books...mysteries with a deep understanding of human psychology. I almost opted out of After the End as it does not fall in my genre wheelhouse. But wow...just wow. I truly felt the full gamut of emotions and the performances by Louise Brealey, Matt Reeves, and Nathalie Armin breath rich life into the so-real characters. This book of love, loss, and rebirth thru new beginnings is a gift.

yawn...😴😴😴

This book was incredibly boring, especially towards the end. I am a cancer mom, too. My son was diagnosed with leukemia at 17 months of age. This story did not capture the real emotions that parents of sick children have. It could have told people so much more about what we as parents go through.

Heart wrenching yet heart warming

I don’t often write reviews but this story is deserving of one. This is my 2nd book to read by Clare Mackintosh and I can say she is one of my favorite authors. She certainly has a way with words and capturing the complex human emotions and dynamics between couples and parents. It was definitely hard to listen to at times, but the end was beautiful. I highly recommend this book.

Summary

The book was a little slow for me but I understand that this is a true story and for that I admire all parties involved who matters.

What a tale!

Loved the story and alternative views. The Brittish vs. American cultures and wording was off from time to time. Very heartfelt insights were put into this story.

I loved it.

This book was truly heartbreaking but so well done. I would definitely recommend it. If you have ever had a baby in the hospital you definitely relate.

Devastatingly difficult and beautiful

I can't even begin to imagine the Solomon's choice this book describes. The heartbreak and loss are palpable. This book is simply stunning.
