Afterlife, just a place for an unhappy king to call home or soon to become a beacon of hope when a new waitress falls at his feet? The Gothic nightclub is about to welcome a new guest, and this time it is one he can’t control. As for Dominic Draven, the king of all supernatural life, handling just one little mortal named Keira should be no problem for him…right? Wrong! As she is his chosen one, she is not meant to be ruled by a domineering, overbearing, arrogant boss who is determined to keep her at arm’s length.

It’s been seven years. Seven long years since that cold and cruel Vampire King, Lucius, broke her heart. Her naive little heart destroyed after one painful night when she sneaked in to his Gothic nightclub, Transfusion. Seven years since he humiliated her, casting her aside and telling her just what he thought about her little obsession with him. Then he saved her life. Well, now he is back, and this time he is out for blood, and all she can hope for is that it isn’t hers that’s on the menu.

The day I snuck into the infamous Devil’s Ring Fight Club. I had followed my cousin Amelia, who turned out not to be quite as innocent as I first believed. In fact, it turned out she didn’t live in the same world as I did…Not at all. I knew this the moment I entered his kingdom. My world changed the moment he found me. He gave me a warning that night. He told me if he ever found me again then next time, he wouldn’t be so quick in letting me escape him. His little Red Riding Hood. It was a threat I took seriously as it was only my dreams that took me back to that place.

Minalan gave up a promising career as a professional warmage to live the quiet life of a village spellmonger in the remote mountain valley of Boval. It was a peaceful, beautiful little fief, far from the dangerous feudal petty squabbles of the Five Duchies, on the world of Callidore. There were cows. Lots of cows. And cheese. For six months things went well: He found a quaint little shop, he befriended the local lord, the village folk loved him, he found a sharp young apprentice to help out, and, best yet, he met a comely young widow with the prettiest eyes.

Publisher's Summary
Afterlife...just some gothic nightclub where gossip is fuelled by the presence of a rich and unearthly, handsome family or afterlife...the strange place where time seems to stand still and guests feel the presence of something more powerful held within the confines of the VIP.
Keira is new to this small, cold town and is running from a past that seems to feast on her darkest memories. She finds living with her sister away from English soil to be just the ticket to the new life she is trying desperately to find. So when the offer of a job at the infamous gothic nightclub Afterlife comes along she thinks that lady luck has finally found her. That is until its seductively dark and forbidding owner Dominic Draven sets eyes on her.
All at once she is captivated and plunged into a world she never knew existed, but the deeper her obsession with Draven becomes, the harder it is to decide...should she stay and continue to work within the shadows of the supernatural or should she run from a madness she thinks may consume her?
Warning: This audiobook not only has sexual content but is amazingly addictive, with its dark mystery, haunting horror, seductive twists and one sexy dark lord that has the listener drooling every time the name Draven is heard! This audiobook has been written by an UK author with a mad sense of humour. Which means the following story contains a mixture of Northern English slang, dialect, regional colloquialisms and other quirky spellings that have been intentionally included to make the story and dialogue more realistic for modern day characters.

Loved IT!!
I have been in love with this series since I found it a few years ago. The Afterlife Saga is a series that can be read and reread over and over. I'm glad I tried out the audible version. Afterlife fans will be glad to hear that there are extra scenes and extra lines throughout this version, adding some details and even some extra steamy scenes. This book brings you into a world of demons and angels where not all demons are bad and not all angels are good, but some of both are here on earth to protect humans and maintain a balance. this series keeps you on your toes while you follow the love of Kiera, a human, and Draven, an angel/demon halfbreed. Another person wrote in her review that this a book for teens, I dont know what she would allow her kids to read, but I certainly wouldnt want my daughter to read this....yet.... ill recommend it when she is older, as there are detailed sex scenes. Like I said, I liked hearing the audible version and will definitely be getting the other books as they come out in hopes that they too will have extra scenes.

It is a good book yet it is NOT in many ways
This is a difficult book to review. It is a good book yet it is not in many ways.
I’d like to start by saying I absolutely love long audio books. With that being said, this book is way too long. The reason is that it is filled with chapters of absolutely NOTHING! Meaning the book does not move forward. Nothing is accomplished or revealed during these long winded chapters. It is so long winded that you forget what questions you are waiting to be answered causing you to drift off, and lose interest. This makes listening frustrating as the story itself is very, very intriguing and just a plain good story.
The author has great talent in telling a good story, but the way she tells it is indeed frustrating. I understand dragging a story out a little to build suspense but it is possible to drag it out way too long and risking the reader completely not caring anymore about what happens in the end. Throughout the book there are lots of contradictions. For example, the heroin is special in that she cannot be controlled by the Hero’s kind, yet the hero can control her in all of the sexual scenes due to her being emotional. I would be better for the story if he and his kind simply could not control her period/at no time.
With all that being said, I will read the next book in the series as it is better than a lot of the crap out in this genre and the story is just that good. Let’s just say, I will be fast forwarding through the unnecessary stuff. Although this series is about a young girl who has major self-esteem issues, it is not necessary to make her completely stupid! She is portrayed as so utterly stupid so much so that lots of readers will not be able to relate and it will take away from the believability. Cutting this story down several hours, and adding multiple points of views along with a narrator who can expertly read with DIFFERENT voices, will do wonders for this series. The narrator’s male voices are horrific.
Pros:
Excellent story
Excellent characters
Good action
Intriguing
Lots of supernatural shenanigans
Cons:
Heroin is utterly stupid unnecessarily
Lots of unnecessary fluff not needed
Heroin falls down 95% of the book
Heroin cries 95% of book
Heroin’s hair is described 95% of book (unnecessary)
Heroin being a complete doormat, falling down constantly, and being utterly stupid all at once will be too much for some readers.
Major issues are described without addressing them at multiple times throughout this book
On the small occasion that a major issue is addressed, it either is contradictory or not really addressed
Although the book is about supernatural/magic, there are Lots of things just simply don’t make sense

European Narrator
Storyline was great, for the length of the book it went by fairly quickly. the Narrator was really good, however her impression of how Americans talk is slightly insulting. she pretty much made us sound like slow rednecks high on paint fumes. She does get better in the second book and I still recommend listening to this one.

Same poor narrator -- for 191 hours!
I don't know if this book is good or bad, because I couldn't get past the narration. The reader sounds too juvenile for the subject matter, and it doesn't help that all of the characters are badly rendered, especially the female MC who sounds WAY too young to be serving cocktails in a bar, much less sleeping with an adult male.
Rebecca Rainsford, the 13 year old (sounding) narrator, can't do American accents, or commanding male voices, or differentiate between multiple characters. (I never got to a *steamy* scene, but I'm pretty sure her baby voice would have made it cringe-worthy.)
What really strikes me though, is this is Hudson's magnum opus -- 8 books long and counting! And the books are BIG books, up to 30 hours each! So why would an author so inspired and motivated by her story that she writes that much -- not take the time to choose an adult sounding narrator (who can also do American accents), to perform it?
To make it more confounding, Hudson or her publisher, clearly chose the wrong narrator for book 1, and then compounded the error by keeping that narrator for all 191 hours of narration. (That has to be some kind of record.)
Recommended? Nope, unless you plan read it for yourself.

great job Rebecca
I love this series and own all the books. I decided to purchase the audio books to give me something to listen to while cleaning or in the car. I have to say the first book is at this time the only book given a discount to customers who have already purchased the books. Book two is not discounted. I find this disheartening. I had hoped to purchase all the audio books. At almost $30.00 each I don't foresee that happening. With that said, the audio books are well done. I wondered how the characters would be performed. I will say I think Rebecca did a good job. I have already listened to the book twice.

Ah, Draven!
Stephanie weaves an incredible journey that ensnares the imagination. It truly enjoyed Kiera's story and meeting all the Draven's. While the narrator gives you a good feel for Kiera, I would have preferred a more masculine voice for Dominic (as this is what I had heard in my mind when I read the book before then listening to the Audible version)

I wish I had a time machine
Afterlife can be described in very few words, incredibly cheesy, terrible jokes. And the term bad boy grin is repeated far too often. I am still trying to work out what that exactly means. The story is horrifically long. I downloaded it thinking it would be a great book for my daily walks but I found myself fast forwarding parts but I still managed to catch the term bad boy grin far to many times. I am going to be honest and say I have listened to a couple of the other books in this series hoping they would get better as I enjoyed the mythological element but they were just as tedious painfully slow paced and the main heroine is hideously unfunny the scouser jokes not even the slightest bit amusing and everyone is described as gothic. Gothic barbie gothic biker child goth punk goth etc and the sex scenes are hardly erotic or detailed. I definitely think this series could be rewritten better change the heroine change the gothic background and their stereotypes. Edit lots of the unnecessary details and a new narrator.

Oh good grief !
more than 20 hours of description of how overwhelmed/tearful/shy ( basically pathetic) the "beautiful but she doesn't know it heroine is !! The "Hero" is the usual strong dark silent type who goes all soppy with lust. It a mills and boon style formula story but dragged out. A nipples being described as "points of desire" sort of thing !!
Formula stuff that is so bad it's sometimes funny. The American accent the reader employs is also some sort of revenge for dick van dykes English accent in Mary poppins I think. It was painful to listen to. And I don't think I have ever thought or said "oh good grief" whilst listening to a book so often !!

All In All A Great Read :)
Loved loved this book :)
It's been a while since I've read/listened to a book & been even longer since I've found one that actually caught my attention!!
Very detailed, descriptive book that you can really plunge your imagination into.
The Narrator could have been a little more enthusiastic at times. For example when doing long stretched "Nooooo!!" & screams etc but in all she did really well & didn't annoy me like some can.
Will definitely be buying the full set.
Anyone thinking of buying this has no reason to hesitate. It's a winner in my eyes 👍🏽👌🏽

Mills and boon meets twilight
At least you get value for money because it’s 25 hours long. the story is ok, but the sex scenes are overblown bodice rippers.

Absolutely dreadful
Replace the name Draven with Drivel and you have this book in a nutshell. Very poor mash up of 50 shades of Grey and the Twilight series. The narration was beyond excruciating. Do not waste your money on this travesty of a book.

Just don't do it! Save your credit.
If this book wasn’t for you, who do you think might enjoy it more?
People who like weak, pathetic, foolish female leads, shallow character development, and predictable plot. You'll also need to be able to tolerate a narrator whose voice for the male and American parts is less than stellar (her main character was good though)
What could Stephanie Hudson have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
Rewrite it? I would have preferred a more in depth attempt at world building and a stronger less foolish lead character. Kira is more like a dithery, child than a grown woman who has a traumatic past. She is beautiful but doesn't know it, she's jealous of dravens beautiful female friends and they are jealous of her having his blind love. Her relationship with draven seems shallow and it is irritating, they meet up a few times in dreams and he's overbearing and she is pathetically submissive and they are obsessed with each other but nothing much has happened at this point. Then she starts work at the club he owns and they brush past each other a few times blah blah blah plus the constant references to how he makes her core feel made me want to bang my head against a wall or some other mild self harm behaviour. The lack of world building was especially disappointing and considering the overall length of the book, it doesn't seem like much happened at all really. Obviously this is a fantasy novel because Kira got a green card to work stateside without a job offer before she got there like it was easy.....
Would you listen to another book narrated by Rebecca Rainsford?
Possibly, although I'd prefer her not to try the male parts especially if they are supposed to be American
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Afterlife?
Maybe some of the dream meetings but I'm sure that it would have been better if it had been shorter overall. I'd attack it with a ferocious delete button to find ways of chopping out and changing lots of paragraphs to be more compact
Any additional comments?
I'm not a literary snob Ill read most things but this was painful, the angel/demon thing and the mortal/immortal love thing are both right up my street and the story has potential to be good but needs more depth especially as it felt like an endurance race to get to the need of it,

Interminally long, drawn out and passionless
The story is stretched so long to support overblown prose the same concepts are repeated ad infenitum to infuriating effect. There is only a juvenile infatuation between Kiera and Draven, which takes far too long to be brought into the open as does the revelations of Kiera's backstory. Practically the whole plot of the novel is delivered in the final 6 chapters! A waste of twenty-something hours of my life!!

!!!!!CAUTION!!!!! addictive!
I started this book while I was waiting for an appointment, I was called up and regretted booking the appointment! Miss Hudson should be very proud of herself for battling dyslexia and coming out with a fantastic first novel! Having mild dyslexia myself I understand the struggles. The only down side is having to wait for the next installment! (already present ordered on audible!)
Thank you for such an epic ride with this story. Looking forward to the next!! <3

Too much build up not enough substance & annoying narration
Narration for the main character was fine but the other characters and especially the different accents were at times cringe worthy.
The storyline was ok, on the basic side really with not enough of the right kind of detail or action for my liking. Dragged on with way too much flowery and descriptive language with overt repetitive’hints’ at connections and such and not enough substance. Most of the book was a build up and i struggled to see it through to get to the action, which was pretty basic imo too.
Main character got annoying too, she was written in to the story to be ‘good’ and selfless but to me she seemed to act more selfish and spoiled with no regard for the consequences of her actions so by the end of the book I was frustrated with her too.
All in all, not the worst but would be better by far as a 4 hour read rather than a 26 hour one

Afterlife
As a whole liked the story it held my interest, but there where times that I found frustrating as it kept going over the same things.
The Narrative was great with Keera’s voice but other voices or people in the story was not very appealing, frustrating even. As a male it was terrible.
I will move forward with the next book, as I want to know what happens, hopefully the author does not repeat the past over and over.

Too slow and not 100% on the narrator
I am kinda liking the book and Rebecca plays the main character of Kiera perfectly but she is not good with the other voices. All of the American voices she does sound the same and Draven's voice is all wrong. The book moves too slowly. You are waiting and waiting for something big to happen and it just isn't coming. I want to know more about Dominic Draven and what they are but it is like paint drying. Kiera can be very annoying, she is constantly doing everything wrong. She reminds me a bit of Bella from the Twilight Series, always getting in trouble foolishly.

very basic book. Terrible accent from reader
The book is great for someone maybe 12yo. Struggled to get past first 2 chapters and gave up. The accent play was terrible. Would have been less irritating if just read normally.
