Publisher's Summary

"Nobody in the world was more inadequate to act the heroine than I was."

Why did Agatha Christie spend her career pretending that she was "just" an ordinary housewife, when clearly she wasn't? Her life is fascinating for its mysteries and its passions and, as Lucy Worsley says, "She was thrillingly, scintillatingly modern." She went surfing in Hawaii, she loved fast cars, and she was intrigued by the new science of psychology, which helped her through devastating mental illness.

So why—despite all the evidence to the contrary—did Agatha present herself as a retiring Edwardian lady of leisure?

She was born in 1890 into a world that had its own rules about what women could and couldn't do. Lucy Worsley's biography is not just of a massively, internationally successful writer. It's also the story of a person who, despite the obstacles of class and gender, became an astonishingly successful working woman.

With access to personal letters and papers that have rarely been seen, Lucy Worsley's biography is both authoritative and entertaining and makes us realize what an extraordinary pioneer Agatha Christie was—truly a woman who wrote the twentieth century.

What Fun!

One either likes Lucy Worsley's work, or doesn't. I'm a fan, have always enjoyed her documentaries on British television, and when by chance I discovered this book on this site, snapped it up. Very well researched and fortunately even-handed as others have not been about Agatha Christie, what makes the book so delightful is that Worsley read the audio herself. I know I wouldn't have enjoyed it nearly as much with any other reader. I've read and loved Christie's books since the sixties so didn't really learn much new about her or her work, but it was fun also to revisit the fine lady.

If you adore Agatha Christie you’ll love this book

I have been a fan of Lucy Worsley’s for some time and was over the moon to hear she was writing a book about Agatha Christie. I’m on a mission to finish all of Christie’s books before I turn 40 (it’s not looking good). I absolutely love Christie and her writing style.

I have to say that I enjoyed this book as much as I enjoy a Christie book. The pace and focus were great (I had actually just finished another autobiography on Christie so it did cover a lot of familiar ground) but this really shone a light on what was so great about Christie as a person and how she evolved not just as a writer but a human.

You really can’t go wrong with Lucy Worsley and you really can’t go wrong with snuggling up to a Christie book so this was a win / win for me.

A fascinating woman profiled by a fascinating woman

Lucy Worsley has done it again! This time the subject of her historical investigation is one of the world’s most beloved authors, Agatha Christie. So much insight and care is given to dear Agatha’s biography that it is a complete joy to listen to: more than once!

Finally a Worsley book narrated by her!!!

So very happy to finally have a book narrated by Lucy herself! While the other narrators have been fine, their Placid tones do nothing to relate her unabashed enthusiasm for her topic. Excellence from her, as always, with the happiness of the cherry on top of getting to listen to her expound upon this interesting woman!!!
Less like a formal narrator and biography, Lucy narrates in her usual exuberant manner, making it more like a conversation with a friend over lunch.

Brilliant

I have 1667 books in my audible library. I write very few reviews. I’m not sure why that is. I listen to mostly fiction and I prefer to listen to books that are better listened to rather than read. But I have to make an exception in this case (about the review). I am a huge Lucy Worsley fan. I am also a huge Agatha Christie fan and have been since my 8th grade teacher was so over the moon about Agatha Christie that she dragged me into the obsession.. I am so delighted to have Worsley and Christie together here.. Worsley brings the same great narration to her book that she brings to her BBC series which I love to watch. I love her intonation and inflection. But I also am thrilled to learn things about Agatha Christie that I never knew. It’s a great book, with great research, great insight into the wonderful author and her life, I admit my ignorance in not realizing that in addition to all of her historical work and her great documentaries on BBC, that Worsley is also an author. I am planning to download the other books that she has written and has narrated herself. Because let’s face it, narration is half the game in an audiobook

This book provided such an in-depth portrait of the author. Loved it and loved Lucy Worsley’s enthusiasm for her subject.

Excellent Biography, So-so Narration

Having read multiple biographies of Christie, this is, in my opinion, the only one that give us a view into the complexity, genius, and multifaceted nature of Agatha. I’m thrilled this exists as a resource and I’m happy to recommend it. Unfortunately, the book is performed by the author, Lucy Worsley. Worsley tries valiantly to inject energy into her reading but the end result is a single note of excited anticipation for every word in the text. Tantor Media made a mistake in not hiring a professional. Still, the book itself is excellent and I have ordered a hard copy.

Thank you, Worsley

This was a sensitive and thorough biography of the world’s dear Agatha Christie.
Some have stated that they don’t enjoy the author’s narrations in other books. I don’t agree. I enjoyed the work and the author’s voice thoroughly.
