There is absolutely no logical reason why I am here. The life trajectory my nationality and class and circumstances portended for me was not even remotely close to the one I now navigate. But logic is a science and living is an art. The release I felt in writing my first memoir, Not My Father’s Son, was matched only by how my speaking out empowered so many to engage with their own trauma. I was reminded of the power of my words and the absolute duty of authenticity.

The modern audience hasn't had a chance to truly appreciate the unknowing dread that readers would have felt when reading Bram Stoker's original 1897 manuscript. Most modern productions employ campiness or sound effects to try to bring back that gothic tension, but we've tried something different. By returning to Stoker's original storytelling structure - a series of letters and journal entries voiced by Jonathan Harker, Dr. Van Helsing, and other characters - with an all-star cast of narrators, we've sought to recapture its originally intended horror and power.

The tide is turning against the colonists in the Revolutionary War, and 18-year-old Elizabeth Morris cannot sit by idly. Quietly disdainful of her Tory parents, who drag her along to society events and welcome a British soldier into their home during their occupation of New York City, Elizabeth decides to take matters into her own hands. She realizes that, as a young woman, no one around her believes that she can comprehend the profound implications of being a nation at war - she is, effectively, invisible. And she can use this invisibility to her advantage.

Is bourbon the quintessential American liquor? Bourbon is not just alcohol - the amber-colored drink is deeply ingrained in American culture and tangled in American history. From the early days of raw corn liquor to the myriad distilleries that have proliferated around the country today, bourbon is a symbol of the United States. This course traces bourbon's entire history, from the 1700s, with Irish, Scottish, and French settlers setting up stills and making distilled spirits in the New World, through today's booming resurgence.

Come one, come all
There are few greater showmen around than Alan Cumming. He can act, sing, and dance, and let’s not forget his razor-sharp wit. And he’s never afraid to share his opinion, as he does in Legal Immigrant, exploring how his life as a Scotland-born naturalized American citizen has impacted him and shaped his views on current immigration policies. His politics are clear and so is his talent. Cumming performed and recorded the show at the Minetta Lane Theatre, eliciting laughter and poignant moments of connection, while interspersing his story with an eclectic selection of songs that lend to the theme and mood. It felt like I spent a couple of wonderful hours at a fabulous cabaret show that you now also get to experience.

About the Creator and Performer
Alan Cumming has performed with Jay-Z and Liza with a Z; he has won a Tony, hosted the Tonys, and been nominated for an Emmy for doing so. He has a soap called Cumming in a Bar, and a bar called Club Cumming. He made back-to-back films with Stanley Kubrick and the Spice Girls. He has played God, the Devil, Hitler, the Pope, a teleporting superhero, Hamlet, all the parts in Macbeth, General Batista of Cuba, a goat opposite Sean Connery, Dionysus, a Smurf (twice) the EmCee in Cabaret (thrice), a James Bond baddie—oh, and political spinmeister Eli Gold on seven seasons of The Good Wife for which he received multiple Golden Globe, Emmy, and SAG award nominations. He is the author of five books including a #1 New York Times best-selling memoir. He plays the first ever gay leading role on an US network drama, CBS’s Instinct. He appeared on Sesame Street, Dora the Explorer, topless in Playgirl, and naked on the cover of his second album.
He has received over 40 awards for his humanitarianism and social activism, three honorary doctorates, both the Great Scot and Icon of Scotland awards from his homeland, and was made an OBE (Officer of the British Empire) for his contributions to the arts and LBGTQIA+ equality by the Queen, whose portrait was taken down when his was unveiled at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery in 2014.
He has sung in concert halls across the globe including the Sydney Opera House, the London Palladium, the Hollywood Bowl, and Carnegie Hall, and Billboard said of his last concert tour Alan Cumming Sings Sappy Songs, "he's an icon to behold—he is unapologetically himself, and with a talent like that, he has no need to apologize."

Get it. Get it.
Thank you Audible, for recording the cabaret 'Legal Immigrant' by the genius Alan Cumming. As I don't live in the USA, this is the only way I can enjoy this wonderful cabaret.
It is everything I thought it would be: smart, hilarious, thought-provoking, insightful and hopeful.
It's very interesting to hear about the situation with immigrants in America, and the bonus at the end of the show gives a better point of view of the situation for people who are not Americans, like me. It made me realize how the "American Dream" I was told about as a little girl is very different today.
I could listen to Alan Cumming talk for hours, I love his insights about life, culture and human behavior in general. And here I have 2 hours of Alan Cumming talking and singing! Ah, my heart is joyful.
A highlight for me was the song 'Caledonia', which completely melted my heart, it made me think "oh, it can't get any better than this".
But then Alan Cumming and his perfect musical band play 'Hymn to Love'.
And now my heart is full.

One of the best listens I have bought
This is a stage show rather than a traditional story. So songs interweave the stories being told. It is a showcase of an amazing talent. Funny, sweet and touching with incredible vocalisations. Just buy it. You will not be disappointed. Alan Cummings has met so many people, done so many things and been to so many places and talks of them all with humor and affection.

There is a lot of singing in this “book”.
I knew this was set in a Cabaret, and that it was the recording of his performance one night, but I didn’t think half the book would be taken up by songs and relentless mentions of his band mates.
I had the impression it would be more memoir, less nightclub.
It got to the point where I stated skipping the songs. So, if you want to hear lots of singing, get it, if you are hoping for a brief memoir, skip it.

Not a book... liberal comedy... performance
This is NOT a book. It isn’t well marked. Alan is very funny and I downloaded just from like of his acting and reputation. 3 stars is a compromise between funny “stand-up” and what I can extrapolate as “story”. Audible forced me to rate the Performance category. I would’ve left it blank since it isn’t my cup of tea. I skipped the singing chapters... every other one. The 3 will hopefully not bias stats either way. Not everyone who sees major flaws in our immigration situation also agrees even closely with lefty political solutions or values, so I like to be open. From the title, and my guess at Alan’s stature, I hoped for some insightful immigration thesis, but it was really just pretty common pro-diversity and equality rhetoric. Nothing new or particularly “thinky”. If you wanna hear live broadway-style performance mixed with cheerful and funny adult anecdotes, or just “feel” like you overheard some political opinions... this was at least mildly entertaining from the other side of the aisle.

Too broadway
After enjoying Cumming's narration and then falling in love with his memoir, I couldn't wait to hear more from him. I was not expecting all of the singing. Of what remained after all the songs, I didn't enjoy about 1/3 of it. The rest was excellent -- but that didn't leave much.

Anecdotes & Songs, not a story, but that's OK!
a bunch of anecdotes & songs delivered on a stage to a live studio audience. so not a book but the anecdotes are as good as most star-studded biographies. not a musical fan, more a fan of Alan's from his movie/tv work, but he has a stellar voice, some great accompaniment so I was able to enjoy the majority of the songs regardless. Like anything Alan does - full of heart.
