Publisher's Summary

Baking. It can get a guy killed.

When a retired detective and a former police dog set out on a culinary tour of the British Isles, they dream of tasty treats and delicious bakes...

...what they find is mystery, mayhem, and murder.

Albert’s investigator’s brain sees things ordinary people might not, and his dog, Rex Harrison, cannot understand why the humans are struggling to solve each mystery. He can already smell the answer - it’s right before their noses.

Together they lend their skills to help the people they meet, but unwittingly, they’ve discovered a master criminal at work, and what started out as a bit of fun is getting deadlier with each new place they visit.

Good and mysteries….Yum Yum

These light fun mysteries start as light entertainment and then hook you. Food and mysteries are my second favorite combination. The brilliant dog detective is pure fun!!! They are not as formulative as the quick turn out may lead you to believe but have true moments or originality. The mysteries are tricky enough to keep you coming back for more! Very clean and fun with mild violence these are the perfect rest for a busy mind! Playing then back and forth to work makes you look forward to the commute!!!

great author horrible narrator.

The stories by Steve higgs are fantastic, but this narrator has no inflection, pauses in strange places in a sentence and make it a horrible listening experience. The same narrator for blue moon investigations series too, stick with the books, save your ears..

Great Fun !

I love this series of books and am listening as fast as they are released on Audible. I know I could actually read however the narration is great which adds a certain flair to it and the stories are interesting. I love the interaction between Albert and Rex and how it grows over the series. As someone that has had german shepherds for a long time I really laugh at what Rex does. (and in some ways can relate) I can't wait untill they are all on Audible. I'll have to try some of the other books Steve Higgs writes.

If you want to laugh, read these books. You will love Albert and his smart dog Rex. Charles Robert Fox is perfect as the narrator. Highly recommend.

A lovely bookset!

This set kept me happily listening for 2 weeks! I love the detective duo of Albert Smith and his canine sleuth, Rex. Together they explore England enjoying the delicious food of the various places they visit and stumble upon crimes that need solving in the process. Made me so hungry whilst listening that I'd have to have a snack with me every single time! Each story has a bit of humour, drama and sleuthing galore! Loved every minute of it! The narrator brings each character to life. His rendering of Rex and his thoughts was wonderful!

The head hopping felt like whiplash

I liked the premise of these books and was really looking forward to listening to them on audible, but the head hopping between characters was so jarring that it felt like repeated whiplash. Couldn’t finish.

Well Worth A Listen

I thoroughly enjoyed these books. I'd steered clear of purchasing them for a long time thinking that the characters and storylines were not up my street. However, I'm a huge fan of the Blue Moon investigation stories so I thought I would give it a try and I am so glad I did. I just loved Albert and Rex's culinary journey around the country and there sleuthing side line. Every story was a joy to listen too and very informative as I now know what a Bedfordshire Clanger is and the difference between a Bakewell Pudding and Bakewell Tart.
I liked book 4 the best primarily because the interaction between Rex and the sausage dog which was absolutely hilarious ! ! !
I will definitely be purchasing the remaining books in the series.

What an adventure!

I'd read these books before but thought they were so good that I would listen too. Steve has an incredible imagination. I've Rex's thoughts and the way Albert is beginning to try to understand what his dog is trying to tell him. Great stories and a brilliant overarching story of the Gastro thief! Loved it!

Slapdash editing!

Mildly enjoyable stories…very questionable accents though…well put it this way…Melton Mowbray folk sound exactly the same as Bakewell folk who do not sound like Bakewell folk! Is the narrator restricted in his accent ability?
Matlock in the Lake District really?
The planning authority is the PEAK DISTRICT National Park for Bakewell…sloppy research
Other bits and bobs of discrepancies and I haven’t finished book 2 yet !!
Shame as pleasant mindless listening …

Cosy Mysteries with added dog.

I was pleased to discover this collection of 5 books with a wonderful premise; that of hearing the dog's point of view as well as the usual cast of players. Unfortunately the narrator was not up to the task and by the end of the 5th book I was mightily relieved I didn't have to listen to his idiosyncratic narration any more. It's a shame because there are plenty of humorous moments and not too much anthropomorphism of the animals. Sadly the narration reduces my rating of what could have been a splendid series, I will return them.

Thoroughly enjoyed Albert and Rex’s culinary capers

This was such a fun detective book. Adore the role of Rex Harrison the dog and seeing the various situations from his point of view as well as Albert’s.
A lovely bit of light escapism in these dark times. Plus I got to learn a bit about traditional British food at the same time!

Clever and Witty

Portrayal of lead character, 78-year-old ex-detective inspector, Albert Smith by narrator Charles Robert Fox is well-paced and amusing. Steve Higgs' narrative is quietly uproarious and well crafted. Albert charms and leaves younger disbelieving cops gasping for breath in his wake. Including his own three children, all police!

The "dog whispering" is quite a new world and fascinating to me.

I laughed out loud at these stories!

Incredulity capers

Okay but plot devices were stretching it even for this genre. Perhaps the Cosy crime recipe book was misplaced? Beware the hissing sibilant sssss’s
