What could possibly be “lucky” about addiction? Absolutely nothing, thought Laura McKowen when drinking brought her to her knees. As she puts it, she “kicked and screamed . . . wishing for something - anything - else” to be her issue. The people who got to drink normally, she thought, were so damn lucky. But in the midst of early sobriety, when no longer able to anesthetize her pain and anxiety, she realized that she was actually the lucky one. Lucky to feel her feelings, live honestly, really be with her daughter, change her legacy.

Worried about the lack of science
I have concerns that the author doesn’t properly cite research. He notes in the opening that readers are invited to Google the science. But that feels lazy and a disservice to the reader. He relies heavily on the science of the brain balancing the depressant effects of alcohol with stimulant chemicals. And he seems to extrapolate a great series of effects from that phenomenon. I will continue to listen but see the above as deeply concerning.

Not Tools
I rated Mr Porter’s first book a 5. This book does not deliver on its promise. It doesn’t provide anything like a toolkit.
Mr Porter opens by explaining that he had lots more to say following the publication of his first book. This book feels like a rummage through his additional notes. His first book felt tightly organized around a purpose. This one does not.
I had hoped, when I finally got to the Tools chapters, that I would find some useful tools. What I found were more ruminations.
Example: Mr. Porter makes some brilliant points about the importance of self-image. But he fails to provide a set of tools for examining this. He largely shares his own experience and observations. This has some value, but it can get tedious.
I highly recommend Book 1. I would love to see the author come back with a complete rewrite of Book 2. I think that he has it in him. It just isn’t here.

Thank you so much
I have quitted alcohol for 4 months and have read both books on Alcohol explained without them I’m confident I would be back drinking
With lockdown I’m not sure if this is why I’m struggling so much,I have been drinking 45 years. I keep going back to the books when I fear I will be tempted and realise it is not worth it.
I worry when lockdown passes that I will drink on my holidays, but I will continue to read these 2 books for strength
I really recommend the books to all drinkers who realise they might have a alcohol related problem

Day 5 of sobriety
Having read both the Alcohol Explained books this is the first time in 30 years I feel I may just be able to do sobriety! So excited I could cry!! Love these books. They explain what alcohol is and does and how my mind processes it’s effects in a practical way that makes sense. Tried other books and blogs even AA but finally I may just be able to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Only day 5 now but listening to this tolls book over and over to keep me on target. God bless you for taking time out of your life to help others by writing it x

super stuff. fine tunes ideas in AE1 and adds more
Same carefully thought through, clearly expressed and bulletproof arguments (there are so many), backed up with irrefutable experiential desriptions and proof (including reference to one scientific paper, although please don't let that put you off) as last time. After all human understanding of the impact poisons have only progresses so fast. However, this provides more granularisation and details about how to overcome practical difficulties in achieving/maintaining sobriety. I am biased because I am in it (as the anonymous dad in chapter 6), having met the author since reading AF1. But I believe it's really is as good as the first if not better. BOTH books do what it says on their covers.

Does exactly what it says on the tin. This and the first AE have changed my perspective on alcohol and crucially they have removed my desire to EVER DRINK AGAIN. Factual. To the point. Effective.
I read these books out of curiosity (wanting to gain control over alcohol) and emerged thinking “why would I actually ever drink again”. Two months sober and counting

Thank you William Porter.
The tone and pitch of both of William’s ‘Alcohol Explained’ books have been perfect for an educated and generally high functioning person such as myself; schoolteacher, family man. I managed to quit alcohol some years ago after acknowledging the hold it had over me, and maintain long periods of abstinence. However, I believe I suffered for several years from unconsciously clinging to an idea that one day I might be able to start over as a moderate or ‘normal’ drinker. The occasional re-listen to William’s ‘Explained 2’ in particular, really helps me to perceive the nonsense of this idea and clear me of the notion that alcohol must still have something positive to offer me. William’s ‘fantasy’ versus ‘reality’ of our perception of alcohol’s effect is very nicely articulated and a powerful tool to have in one’s mind.

Nice complement to Alcohol Explained
Alcohol Explained 2 is a great reprise of many of the concepts in Alcohol Explained 1; but it goes further and introduces other ideas which the author has considered since writing the original.
By the time you complete AE1 and AE2 you will be well placed to implement any changes you desire to your relationship with alcohol.
