Publisher's Summary

Read by Nicholas Ralph, star of the major TV series on Channel 5.

Fresh out of Glasgow Veterinary College, to the young James Herriot 1930s Yorkshire seems to offer an idyllic pocket of rural life in a rapidly changing world. But from his erratic new colleagues, brothers Siegfried and Tristan Farnon, to incomprehensible farmers, herds of semi-feral cattle, a pig called Nugent and an overweight Pekingese called Tricki Woo, James finds he is on a learning curve as steep as the hills around him. And when he meets Helen, the beautiful daughter of a local farmer, all the training and experience in the world can’t help him....

Since they were first published, James Herriot’s memoirs have sold millions of copies and entranced generations of animal lovers. Charming, funny and touching, All Creatures Great and Small is a heart-warming story of determination, love and companionship from one of Britain’s best-loved authors.

"Herriot's enchanting tales of life in the Dales are deservedly classics. Full of extraordinary characters, animal and human, the books never fail to delight." (Amanda Owen, best-selling author of The Yorkshire Shepherdess)

Brilliant tales, beautifully told.

Having read Alf Wright's books a number of times, it was great to hear them read by this young man in his natural accent. Something akin to the original author. The charm of the stories are still fully there but matched by the charm of a Scottish voice. As Pa Larkin would say "Perfik!" Currently the young narrator is bringing to Channel 5 screens, a modern, lovely made, visual version of the Mr Wright's books. Four TV episodes in, it is already the most watched show in the Channels history. That itself, alongside the makers and actors, is a testimony to the skill of Mr Wright in vet skill, in writing skill and his wonderful varied stories of life. Thank you Alf Wright for brightening the hearts of world millions even when times were a roller-coaster that we all experience to some degree. I look forward to hearing more books lovely narrated by the young excellent actor playing him on our screens. I am just waiting to hear when the next one is available. My pre-order will be quick put in. R.I.P. Mr Alf Wright ...and thank you big time!

Wonderful listen but...

I'm very disappointed as I discovered some chapters missing: for example the chapter about the party from which James and Helen leave together, or the two chapters about Darrowby show - which is unfair as they are the ones used in the new series - very changed but you can recognise them. There are quite a few other chapters missing that I can find in my books I bought a long time ago.
But of course the stories are beautiful anyway and also beautifully read by Mr Ralph, a real pleasure to listen to.

Nostalgic

Loved this book when I read infant years ago and still love it now. Such a good story writer and the narration is brilliant, nothing beats a soft Scottish burr

Just wonderful!

I first read these books almost 30 years ago and when I decided to revisit on Audible I thought long and hard which version to buy - this one or the 'original" Christopher Timothy narrated one. I loved Christopher in the original BBC series, but after watching a few episodes of the new Channel 5 series I decided that Nicholas Ralph's voice was perhaps more authentic as Alf Wight, the real Herriot, was a Scot.

This was a delightful listen, just as I knew it would be. A light hearted glimpse into the life of a country vet in the 1930, before all the modern equipment and miracle drugs. James Herriot's love of animals shines through every word. There is absolutely nothing to dislike about the book, and it will always be one of my favourites.

Nicholas Ralph did a wonderful job with the narration. I loved his Scottish accent but his different Yorkshire accents were perfect too.

An Absolute Delight!

Nicholas Ralph has brought this book to life, with mercurial changes in tone and accents, and instinctive and insightful narration,in his gentle Scottish voice. Once I started listening, I felt transported to bygone days ,set in the Yorkshire Dales, and could not stop until the end. A must listen for anyone wishing to read this classic book.

A classic that can be listened to over and over again

Brilliantly read, love this book and never fails to make me laugh and cry. Nicholas’s Scottish accent made this narration… well done and I want to start to listen all over again.

Perfect

Having watched the channel 5 series (and of course the original) Nicholas Ralph is the perfect narrator. I was transported to Darrowby and the voices for the other characters were wonderful, especially Siegfried. The stories are lovely, it's a very relaxing and sometimes amusing listen

Incredibly dull.

This makes a much better TV series than it does a book. Sure its all very nice, but that starts to wear thin very quickly. If only this well loved book had a central plot and a feeling of progressive momentum...

Instead it is just a collection of connected short stories and in this century they feel rather humourless. Sorry, but I think this books day has passed. I previously read this several times in the 1980s, and always remembered it is a light comedy - today it reads like a tired set of diary entries.
