Publisher's Summary

A gripping debut thriller from the host of the number one podcast Crime Junkie.

If you liked I’ll Be Gone in the Dark and Sharp Objects, you will love this!

What really happened to January Jacobs?

Margot Davies is an aspiring investigative journalist stuck in a rudderless job at a small-time newspaper, until one night she stumbles upon a new development in an unsolved, decades-old case that took place in her very own hometown: the infamous murder of six-year-old January Jacobs. With this new information come to light, Margot quickly becomes obsessed with solving the case. She packs up and heads back to the hometown she left at eight years old, hoping to bring justice to January, who was discovered dead in a ditch only hours after her family awoke to find her gone, along with a horrifying message spray-painted on their kitchen walls.

While the evidence seems to point in one direction, as Margot digs deeper into the case, she begins to suspect that not everything is as it seems. The town is full of secrets—illicit romances, closed-door business deals, prying eyes and hidden pasts. And something deeper, darker and more sinister than she ever could have imagined: a twisted secret that threatens to endanger the lives of everyone involved, including Margot. What’s more, Margot has her own demons to reckon with, repressed childhood memories that begin to haunt her the second she returns home. And she can’t shake the feeling that she’s being followed, watched by a woman who looks a lot like a grown-up January Jacobs....

A gripping, twisty thriller for fans of cold crime cases—from the #1 Crime Junkie podcast host Ashley Flowers.

Sadly very predictable and ends ona cliffhanger

I'm very disappointed that out of all the stories Ashley Flowers could have told she chose one that resembles the JonBenet Ramsey one so much that it becomes a distraction. I'm not sure why she chose to leave her main character in the middle of an unresolved scene. The lack of closure it creates is unnecessary. And there's also a relationship btw the main character and a police officer that kinda feels like there will be a romance and that's left unexplored. A lot of loose ends that sadly feel like a marketing ploy for upcoming books at the expense of the quality of writing. Lastly, I don't understand the authors self-aggrandizing move to read the last chapter of the book. It takes you out of the atmosphere that the main voice actor has created and transports you into an episode of "Crime Junkie" (the author's podcast). Just bizarre anf unnecessary.

Good book

A good old fashioned who done it, lots of twists and turns. I’m no super sleuth so didn’t know “who done it” til the final page. I thought it was clever with good narration.

Great debut novel

I loved the book. Twist after twist kept me on the edge of my seat and I actually enjoyed the open ended ending of the book.

silly.

it's too similar to a really famous murder and couldn't stand the way the story gushes over the main character. alot of it didn't make sense and the way she came to some of the conclusions is laughable. I ended up just saying to myself. this is a silly book.

No ending

This seems to be a fictionalised version of the JonBenet Ramsay murder - even down to the brother and basement details. I really enjoyed the story until the end - because there was no end. The book ends abruptly on a cliff hanger. She discovers the murderer, the murderer confesses to the crime, and then the story ends, with the implied outcome that she gets murdered too before being able to reveal who did it. Presumably this cliff hanger of an ending means book number 2 is being written, but I feel cheated out of a proper conclusive ending which demeans the story totally. If you invest 10 hours, you expect an ending, not a "wait indefinitely for the next installment and one day you might find out what happens next".

WOW

I struggled to read this. I think the punctuation in the US is different from the UK, but I am SO GLAD I found the audio book!!!
Just when I thought I had this story figured out EVERY TIME the plot twisted!!
This is Ashley's first book, I can't even begin to imagine how she can elevate this but I'm sure she will!
Massive congratulations, you should be so proud of yourself! I'm proud of you!!
I NEVER write positive reviews 😂
This was amazing I'm completely in awe.

Disappointed

An overly dramatic who dunnit solved through the mind reading of suspects and huge assumptions. Repeating the protagonists gut feelings over and over again doesn’t make them logical deductions. I stuck with the book until the end through gritted teeth.

Blown away!

I can’t believe this is a first novel. Fantastic concept, writing and performances. One of the best stories I’ve listened to for ages. Nothing graphic, minimal swearing, lovely cast of characters, exciting and twisty plot. Congratulations to everyone involved - looking forward to the next one.

Good mystery. Slightly disjointed ending

A really good audiobook. Great reader, gripping story. It needed a little extra to round off one character’s fate. No spoilers - it’s good enough without it. But it felt ultimately unsatisfying because of it.

DNF - too much exposition and extraneous detail

I almost got to the end but couldn’t and was more satisfied googling last-minute spoilers. The story itself is actually quite good with some great red herrings. But the writing and delivery was too frustrating for me with so much exposition as to ruin the experience. And so many unnecessary descriptive details (e.g., comprehensively listing items on a desk, the details of photos unimportant characters had in their homes). I wanted so badly to like this book but just couldn’t.

Loved this soo much more than I thought I would

I’ve never been into audio books but I do love my crime junkie podcast so I thought I’d give it a go and boy did I love this book I didn’t get bored as I thought I would being a book and not just a 40 minute podcast straight to the facts. Ending was great and had me so hooked definitely had full body chills a couple tone through out listening and I didn’t think I would enjoy without Ashley narrating but the narrator did an amazing job. I loved this book and would highly recommend

What an amazing read/listen! I was captured right from the very start and just balled my eyes throughout the entire epilogue 😭 I personally want a sequel because You did that Ashley! I also personally dont want a sequel because the ending was enough for me 🤣😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
