Brilliantly written
This book was wonderful and would have been better if only the editor kept the music out of it, I did not feel it added and often it diminished from the book.
On more than one occasion the music was between sentences in the same paragraph or even words in the same sentence, each musical piece was about 30 seconds long and often overlapped the end of the sentence and the beginning of the next.
In general I think the editor and narrator did a poor job of it and would not recommend their works to anyone, James Herriot is still a great author and should be read/listened to.

at last
This was the only omnibus audio book missing from the herriot collection on audible. It is superb and a must for any fan. You also get to meet Granville Bennett for the first time. Very enjoyable

Superb storytelling
Prefect narration and wonderful colourful stories told with warm and good humour.
I actually quite liked the occasional light music that sometimes played between storylines.
The chapter spacing is a bit off (Amazon), but that won't stop you enjoying this book.

‘perfect stories, gifted story-telling
As a child I’d read & watched & really loved all things JamesHerriot. Now Im grownup, Im enjoying these tales every bit as much; gorgeous gentle humour.
No-one but Christopher Timothy should be allowed any place near the narration - he *is* Herriot, superb!
A beautiful book for all ages.
PS- somebody (prev review ^) on here moans about ‘music’ spoiling the reading..? For heaven’s sake - theres a couple of bars of cheery tunes here & there; no impact, no issue.

A great listen
Christopher Timothy narrates the real life story with such empathy and superb intonation. A joy to listen to as he transports you back to the Yorkshire Dales in the late 1930s.

Christopher Timothy was maybe the obvious choice but also the best choice
Really enjoyed Christopher Timothy’s reading, he was obviously very invested in this and it was as if the author himself was reflecting. So much life and warmth in Herriot’s writing.

A few technical issues but overall very enjoyable
I am thoroughly enjoying reading my way through this series. The audio narrator - Christopher Timothy - does an excellent job of bringing the various characters to life. As noted in my review of the first book, there's no plot here, just a series of well written and entertaining musings on the life of a country vet in the 1930s. As such, it's an easy one to pick up and put down as needed.
There were a few issues with the audio version (a little jumpy in places and an odd echo now and then) and some tropes perhaps haven't aged as well as they might. Both the technical and other issues, however, were minor enough not to spoil my overall enjoyment. I'm looking forward to book three!

Superb narration
Christopher Timothy does a superb job of bringing to life the characters in these stories. It's the best performance I have heard in an audio book.
I found the musical interludes annoying. Also, there are some minor problems with the audio quality and editing (some scratchy sounds, repeated words and skipping).
I think this is a shame considering the work Mr Timothy has put into the narration, but it's only slight and it doesn't detract from his performance.

What a wonderful book, written beautifully with fact and humour. Christopher Timothy narrated the story excellently, making the relaxing and very enjoyable story come alive.
