Publisher's Summary
John Grady Cole is the last bewildered survivor of long generations of Texas ranchers. Finding himself cut off from the only life he has ever wanted, he sets out for Mexico with his friend, Lacey Rawlins.
Befriending a third boy on the way, they find a country beyond their imagining: barren and beautiful, rugged yet cruelly civilised.... A place where dreams are paid for in blood.

Too low
Loved the story, but the volume was so low it was almost impossible to hear sometimes.

Beautifully descriptive.
Colin McCarthy has a wonderfully economic writing style. Writing only what needs to be read.

Excellently narrated modern masterpiece
A brilliant tale of friendship, youth, love and darkness. Mixing the very best of Steinbeck with Tarantino, McCarthy takes you down south to Mexico unsure if you’ll be coming back,
The narrator has you sitting beside a campfire listening to every word. His reading brings a magical dimension to the characters, something that could be missed if you were reading the book. I never imagined an audiobook could be such a rich format and profound experience.

A beautiful and heartbreaking story.
I was truly sad to get to the end of this incredible story. The author's one of my favourites. His use of the language is both intimate and epic in turn. It's a story of love and life and freindship and belonging. it's tragic and uplifting in the way that only McCarthy can write. The narration was perfect and added so much to my enjoyment. Thanks, I loved it!

Cracking listen
Read this book a while ago and loved it so would be interesting to see if it was as good as I remembered.
Well it was narrated brilliantly and didn’t disappoint me.
Cormac McCarthy is a genius and would recommend all his novels but especially this trilogy.

Magnificent, sublime and gripping
I enjoyed this as much as Blood Meridian. McCarthy writes action as beautifully as he does landscape and the country of the American South-West. Beautifully narrated and an absolute delight from start to finish.

Wonderfully evocative and lyrical book and reading
Absolutely adored it. Timeless and beautifully written. Took me back to the 19th century in Texas and Mexico was really sorry when it ended.

A slow burn but worth it, it gets better and better
Took me a while to get into this as I felt the story was a little slow. My advice would be don’t rush it, relax into it and then begin to appreciate the prose and beautifully constructed language around what is a fairly simple story with deep undertones. This was my first Cormac McCarthy book and I will definitely move onto the next one.

Slow paced. 3.5-4 stars
I didn't enjoy this as much as The Road or No Country For Old Men, it seemed to plod along in parts & I got a bit bored with it. I got used to the pace though & enjoyed the narration although not too much of a story.

Stays with you
McCarthy's prose is matchless. Taste the dust, smell the horses, feel the loneliness. Epic stuff.

Disappointing
I loved "No country for old men". I realise that I shouldn't expect a re run of that book, but I was exceedingly disappointed with this. I am sure that it is well written, but the story tends to ramble and lacks any pace or direction. This may be an attraction for some people but doesn't hold my attention. I am a couple of hours in and unlikely to finish the book unless I run out of other stuff to read or listen to. Thinking of returning this.

This book made me a fan
All the Pretty Horses is a masterpiece. It totally sold me on McCarthy and I've enjoyed several of his books since. It tells the tale of two Texas cowboys and their coming of age journey into Mexico. McCarthy injects this somewhat simple setting with great power and majesty. It's not a perfect book and sections of it do drag a little, but overall the story will leave you with something to chew on once you're done reading.

All the Pretty Horses
McCarthy writes like an angel and the narrator’s voice captures perfectly the loneliness of the story, the gentle but complex nature of the protagonist and the savage landscape. John Ford would have done wonders with this book.

Breathtaking
It was amazing. What an adventure in Mexico for these two fellas, I'm still trying to catch my breath.
It makes my experience in Argentina with dysteria, tinea, thrush, those scabbs on my scalp, a fella getting stabbed and having to eat a horse seem like something that could happen at my nephew's next birthday party.
I could relate to the color descriptions of the landscapes, and about being questioned by officials as to the reason you're there as opposed to being in your own country where the money is so much better, I can see why that would seem suspicious.
I felt sorry for the ranch owner for putting that much trust in them that he had his own investigation done so he could prove their innocence just to be let down and find out they'd lied to him.
I liked the part when Alejandra would sneak over to his room at the stables and when they'd have sex he'd put his hand over her mouth so nobody could hear her and she'd bite his hand that hard it would draw blood, that's one of those rare instances of passion that aren't felt many times in a lifetime.
My favorite part was at the end when he got back to Texas and said he didn't know where his country was. Once you wander a bit and see some of the world it's truly hard to know where you belong as you end up with a little bit of everywhere you've been in you.

Exquisite.
I devoured this book, loving every aspect of it. From the sumptous and generous writing to the excellent narration.
So much of the books themes, locals and history was totally alien to me, so it was an incredible and oft heart-rendering experience that I will treasure.
The moods and relationships and landscapes are masterfully echoed in the authors language and will be a solemn delight to any lover of good fiction, I reckon.
It should be noted that due attention is given to the equine world, and the relationships between human and horse are as deeply considered as any other relationship explored in the book. So, if you lilove horses and reading, this is a must!
