Story
There is a serial killer on the loose preying on vulnerable women. The only identifiable mark the killer leaves are letters - sometimes one, sometimes two - all carved into the torsos of his victims. Together, they spell “Sydney”. When he grabs Daisy Dawson, he believes he has found his next victim. But despite her small stature, she fights back with an expertise that quickly frees her. Before fleeing the scene, Daisy also manages to grab what proves to be crucial evidence: a necklace from around the killer’s neck.

Publisher's Summary
The New York Times best-selling author of Closer than You Think returns with a breathtaking new novel of suspense that crosses the line between danger and desire and justice and revenge.
Homicide detective Scarlett Bishop has seen enough bad guys slip through the cracks and too many innocent victims go unavenged to know that good doesn't always prevail. So far she's been able to lock away her rage and her vigilante fantasies. That lock is about to break.
Former army ranger Marcus O'Bannion is a fierce champion of victims' rights. His secret past gives him good reason. He believes he's seen the depths of human depravity, but then his investigation into the murder of a young girl who once asked for his help lures him and Scarlett down a dark, dark road - and straight into the crosshairs of a dangerous, powerful underground ring that deals in human trade. To stop them Scarlett and Marcus have to be just as cunning and just as ruthless. But first they have to make it out alive.

Captured me
First, for those that have the problem with the missing chapters. That happened to me also, I had to remove it from my phone and re-download, that corrected the problem.
I enjoy Karen Rose and this was a little different from the others. Having so many bad guys caused the story to be a bit busy but I liked the story itself. I was missing Scarlet's problem resolution. Nothing happened with that story. It didn't really relate to the story and it didn't come up again. In other stories both the lead characters have issues that need to be resolved. Her's was touched on in the beginning then nothing, so what was the point?
I also didn't understand the point of the spoiled brat, her character was just plain irritating.
Two irritants not bad for 30 hours.

Great Addition To The Series
Marcus O'Bannion is an ex-army Ranger. He suffered serious injuries while he was trying to protect a woman nine months ago. Now, he suspects another woman is in serious danger. A chance encounter at the park leads him to fear for Tala's life. He convinces her to meet him and to tell him how he can help her. When Tala agrees he calls the woman who has been on his mind since the moment he woke up in the hospital bed and saw her eyes, Homicide Detective Scarlett Bishop. Meeting Tala leads to him getting shot and Tala losing her life.
Scarlett Bishop knows that Marcus is hiding things from her. He's the editor of the newspaper the Ledger and due to the pieces he runs, his life has been threatened multiple times. When she goes to meet him, he has been shot once again, but thankfully he was wearing a kevlar this time. She has been thinking about him for the last nine months. She's attracted to him but she had a bad experience with a reporter before. Trusting Marcus is not going to be easy but she must do it before the people who want him dead try again.
Karen Rose is able to build such a formidable story. She gives you many details to get to know her characters inside and out.
Marcus has a threatening exterior but he had a good heart. He was carrying a lot of guilt and sadness over various events that have marked him. His interest for Scarlett was real. He wanted to protect her as much as he could without taking away her job as a cop.
After so much death, Scarlett was questioning everything. She wasn't sure if she was strong enough to be a good cop and remain in her job. Losing her best friend in college changed her forever and pushes her to want justice for victims but after years in the field, she wasn't sure she could continue doing it. She was thankfully for her partner Deacon and for the first time in a long time, she was willing to try a new romantic relationship.
As a bonus, I love that Faith and Deacon were very much part of the investigation and we get a glimpse at the next couple to fall in love.

Who swallows audibly that much?
Okay. I enjoyed the story. This author is entertaining, which is exactly what I'm looking for. I did notice, however, in this book, many of the characters "swallow audibly" or "gulp audibly" a lot. It's distracting. I mean, really? Aside from cartoons and comedy, do you really know anyone that actually swallows audibly on a regular basis?
I share this, because it was annoying. In the previous book, many of the characters said "oh God" repeatedly. This time, they all swallow really loud. I'm downloading the next book in the series now. Can't wait to see what new tick her characters have developed!
Oh, I did enjoy the story and the book (I skipped the sex scenes, because I don't require that much detail), I just find certain aspects a bit tedious.

A little disappointed
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
If they were a fan of Karen Rose yes, but understand that the first book in the series was much better. This book leaves you wanting more from the characters.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
Some parts yes, but overall it needed more suspense.
Which character – as performed by Hillary Huber – was your favorite?
Both Scarlett and Marcus are well done.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No. I had to go back at certain points to try to make sense of the progression of the investigation. Then at other times it was too predictable.
Any additional comments?
It was unclear how some of the characters were related to one another. The human trafficking was never fleshed out enough. Seems the research was lacking details that I have come to expect from Ms. Rose. There is no background as it relates to why and how Ken and his group came together and deal in human trafficking. Too many unanswered questions at the end. A series should leave the reader with a hook wanting to read the next book, but this ending was a bit frustrating. I don't want all the threads wrapped up in a pretty bow, but some of the loose ends should have a satisfying conclusion.

Suspenseful!
Great follow up on first book in this series. Found I didn't want to put it down, even listening well into the night. Did a wonderful job of 'tying up' all the lose ends so one is not left hanging after so many hours of anticipation. Sorry when it was over. Now reviewing other novels by Karen to pick my next audible book.
Loved the narrator as she was able to bring all the characters to life and the story easy to follow. Disappointed that I can't find other books by Karen Rose (except book 1) with this lady to listen to. Do hope future novels will be read by her. (Please?)
