Publisher's Summary

Pretty Woman meets the Bridgertons in this witty, vivacious historical take on '90s romcoms by USA Today bestselling author Amalie Howard.

Lord Lysander Blackstone, the stern Duke of Montcroix, has only one interest: increasing his considerable fortune. After a series of betrayals, he keeps his emotions buried deep. Money, after all, can't break a man's heart—or make promises it can’t keep. But when his reputation for being heartless jeopardizes a new business deal, he finds himself seeking a most unusual—and alluring—solution . . .

Once an up-and-coming ballerina, Miss Geneviève Valery is now hopelessly out of work. After refusing to become a wealthy patron's mistress, Nève was promptly shown the door to the streets. When she accidentally saves the life of a handsome duke, she doubts the encounter will go any better than her last brush with nobility. But instead of propositioning her, Montcroix makes Nève an offer she would be a fool to refuse: act as his fake fiancée in exchange for fortune enough to start over.

Only neither is prepared when very real feelings begin to grow between them. They both stand to win . . . but only if they’re willing to risk their hearts.

Wonderful retelling!

This was a pretty woman retelling and it was done marvelously! I loved the story, the fire of Genevieve and the mercurial ways of Stone was a perfect grumpy/sunshine tale! And the narrator was excellent! The many different voices and accents put right in the timeframe of the story! Well done to all!

Absolutely Adored It

Very well done by Mary Jane Wells and the author. I loved the depth of the characters both their praise an nd the faults. The author does not skate over the negative situations scandal erupts and the two main characters face the consequences. No spoilers from me you will have to read and enjoy for yourself. Did I mention that it has good romance included? .....

The Perfect Fake Fiancee Story!

⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐
𝐀𝐋𝐖𝐀𝐘𝐒 𝐁𝐄 𝐌𝐘 𝐃𝐔𝐂𝐇𝐄𝐒𝐒
by Amalie Howard @amaliehoward

I’m not a reader of historical romance and I wasn’t sure what to expect. Now I can say I was grateful to have read this book and delved into something outside my norm.

This book is compared to Pretty Woman meets the Bridgertons, and the premise works and is very well done. Lord Lysander Blackstone, the Duke of Montcroix, is a ruthless businessman who has no time for relationships. Upon the accidental meeting with ballerina Genevieve Valery, he propositions her to be his fake fiancee to help him establish the right image for a seller who questions his authenticity.

Genevieve is in it for the money, Lysander for the opportunity it will give him, but neither are prepared for the feelings that blossom.

This is a beautiful love story where the heart of the grumpy duke is softened, and the ballerina, whose life had been turned upside down, gets a shiny HEA.

Ms. Howard created loveable characters, and a strong woman who wasn’t annoying in the least. I look forward to reading more of her books, and to diving into a subgenre that I’m not too familiar with.

Well done!

it's wasn't one of my favorite books

there are some funny parts. As a whole it got on my nerves. I wasn't a fan of the giggling screaming girls. It at times felt like Iit was written for a teenager.

Easy to listen Historical Romance

This was an easy read with fun, well-developed characters. I'm excited to revisit these characters as the series continues. Although the story is predictable, the dialogue and chemistry between Lysander and Neve kept me interested and I flew through the pages. I think if you liked Bridgerton, you'll like this. This has scandals, fake dating, steamy sex, etc. My only critique is that the author described the hero as being neurodivergent and I feel like this maybe wasn't well researched and/or was maybe lost in editing? He was a distracted man and it felt more like when people (somewhat offensively) say they're OCD because they like their house to be clean and organized, or they have ADD because they have too many things on their plate and are trying to juggle too many things at once and it's just hard. I didn't see any real signs of true neurodivergence in this character and that was disappointing. Maybe I missed it because my professional life involves working with many neurodivergent individuals and I don't see a lot of these traits as unusual or standing out - but I feel an opportunity was missed here for some real inclusion. Otherwise, though, this was a great read!

Quick, witty, charming, sensual, predictable

Although the plot is somewhat predictable, I didn't mind at all. MJW has done it again with her beautifully performed characters. I love everything by her, and the French accent she gives the leading lady in this makes the whole book so much more passionate, and she really does bring the book to life. it was a quick listen, but I instantly fell in live with the plot, the characters, the tone, and their story. Even though it was predictable, I knew I had to hear the details of how it came to an end. Worth the read in my opinion, but then again this genre is my guilty pleasure!

Fantastic story

I found this book because of Mary Jane Wells, the narrator. Mary Jane was amazing as always. The story has me wishing it wouldn’t end. I couldn’t wait to get to the end and now I wish I had slowed down. Now I can’t wait to hear the story of her friends.

Felt too familiar

It is a well written story but it's not too original. Just seemed to remind me of a lot of other books I have read in this genre so I found myself drifting off at times. Narration is excellent.

Incredible narration of an entertaining love story

This was my first foray into Amalie Howard’s writing. Teamed with remarkable narration by Mary Jane Well, this audiobook was perfection. It was engaging, sexy and funny at times. The banter between Neve and Lysander was priceless. ‘Always be my Duchess’ has got to be one of my all time favourites to date - if not THE favourite. I highly recommend this audiobook and will be keen to discover more of Amalie’s novels and listen to anything I can get my hands on by Mary Jane. Bravo!
