The galaxy was once terrorized by the Sturm, a group of “species purists” intent on destroying any human with genetic or cybernetic enhancements. Fashioning themselves as the one true “Human Republic,” the Sturm cut a bloody swath across the stars, killing billions before finally being defeated and driven into the far reaches of Dark Space. Centuries of peace bred complacency. Everyone believed the Sturm had died out in the Dark. They were wrong.

After an exchange student with bubonic plague turns up in a Reno hospital, a contractor with identical symptoms dies in Los Angeles. The government‘s official stance is that the cases are isolated and the outbreak is under control. But George Mack, a 30-year public health veteran, quickly realizes this is no ordinary plague. This new stand-alone survival thriller thrusts the most dynamic city on Earth, New York, into darkness as North America is bludgeoned by the sun's ferocity. Scientists promised a beautiful aurora providing the city that never sleeps with magnificent hues of blue and green. For three days, New Yorkers took to the streets, parks, and rooftops to enjoy the awe-inspiring spectacle. As the power grid failed, the city of New York collapsed with remarkable speed. The thin veneer of civilization was laid bare as man fought one another for survival.

Story
For dinosaurs, it was a big rock. For humans: Coronal Mass Ejection (CME). When the Earth is hit by the greatest CME in recorded history (several times larger than the Carrington Event of 1859), the combined societies of the planet's most developed nations struggle to adapt to a life thrust back into the Dark Ages. In the United States, the military scrambles to speed the nation's recovery on multiple fronts including putting down riots, establishing relief camps, delivering medical aid, and bringing communication and travel back on line. Just as a real foothold is established in retaking the skies (utilizing existing commercial aircraft supplemented by military resources and ground control systems), a mysterious virus takes hold of the population, spreading globally over the very flight routes that the survivors fought so hard to rebuild.

Story
On an entirely normal, beautiful fall day in Chester's Mill, Maine, the town is inexplicably and suddenly sealed off from the rest of the world by an invisible force field. Planes crash into it and fall from the sky in flaming wreckage, a gardener's hand is severed as "the dome" comes down on it, people running errands in the neighboring town are divided from their families, and cars explode on impact. No one can fathom what this barrier is, where it came from, and when - or if - it will go away.

Publisher's Summary
Why do some societies collapse into lawless savagery while others prove resilient and lasting?
On Zero Day of the first and last cyberwar in human history, the internet went dark, transport and power grids collapsed and cities began to starve, showing just how vulnerable the world could be to a targeted campaign of online sabotage. This final instalment of this prescient epic of civilisation collapse finds the small ragtag band of survivors come together to face a new, but eerily familiar threat - the rise of a fascist militia among the ruins of a failing country.
With American Kill Switch, John Birmingham’s End of Days trilogy comes to a high-octane, thrilling conclusion.

Tony "The Tripod"
Jonas Murdoch helps lead the good folk of Silverton. Getting out of Silverton slightly ahead of the motorcycle gang that took over the town. He devised The Legion of Freedom, and with his one hundred cohorts and a slick tongue was busy taking over towns, building an empire. It’s good to be king. Jodi Sarjanan and Ellie Jabbarah navigating the inland waterways of California. Damo and Carl join them, helping Maxi, Pascal, and Beatrice get home to Canada. James O’Donnell and his friends Michelle, Rick, and Melissa traveling cross-country. Rick and Nome were still a team. Nome is my favorite character. James and friends meet up with Damo, Carl, Jodi, and Ellie in the town of Batham where they encountered religious zealot Preacher and his followers. Religious fanatics seem to appear regularly in this genre. James and crew, including Damo and crew, continued heading towards James’ parent’s ranch outside Livingston Montana. Livingston had been destroyed by The Legion. Everyone was welcomed at the O’Donnel’s ranch. Damo’s home was still many miles to the north in Canada, where he and his friends would bring the children home. A pig roast and an open invitation celebrated James’ homecoming. Everyone was happy, in a state of make-believe, and felt safe for the first time in a long time. Michelle set about doing her professional risk assessment. Back in the town of Three Forks, which The Legion had taken over before Livingston, all hell was breaking loose. Michelle, Rick, and a few from O’Donnel’s ranch went to Three Forks to negotiate a settlement but were finding out much more than they had imagined. What was taking place in Three Forks? Hold on to your seat!

I had high hopes!
Story started out strong with some original ideas and interesting characters. The author really developed some characters , while just using stereotypes for others (usually evident by his bias). Sadly this took a 5 star story to 3 star. If there had been only a few biases, it would not be an issue. However it is used regularly throughout. Which felt lazy and lacking. Several times I almost stopped listening but really fell in love with the story line and a handful of main characters (Mel, Rick, Ellie and Michelle).
Narration was well done. The voice of each character was unique and easily distinguished from each other.

Great story!
This 3rd book in this series had me rolling! the presenter did ànd outstanding job for each character. I must say my favorite was Damo.
I use audio books while I'm driving. my car is my office. I almost had to pull over a few times. I was not at all ready for an apocalyptic series that had humor. Humor that seemed realistic. The author even made his story more realistic because of using people's emotions. However, the ending I felt was disgraceful. The serious was slow. It took its time, establishing the time-line and each character. This last book brought their backgrounds into focus and why they are who theyvare now. The end came on beyond extremely fast. It left holes on the story. It was almost as if the author became bored or uninspired and didn't know how to continue on. That was truly a dissappoint.

This is closest to how it will go down, if it does.
Of all apocalyptic fiction, this is one of the very few where all the people don’t conveniently disappear or turn into zombies, making it one of the most realistic. Of course they take a few liberties for the sake of the story arc, but whatever.

Fantastic!
Was so looking forward to this novel and it didn't disappoint. Absolutely loved the series as a whole, a good reminder as to why I subscribe to Audible, free and exclusive books like this!

Character arcs or different characters?
Some time has passed before events in the last book and this one, leading to a confrontation between the Legion and the protagonists. Everything building up to this feels perfunctory, for instance a long, tedious and unnecessary drawn out battle with zombie-like religious zealots. I found the character arcs of a few key players unrecognizably grating. The main protagonist has gone unfocused and soft in a few months of leadership, after finding himself in the post-apocalyptic world. One character has gone from being a desk worker to an actual ninja, while for some reason keeping this a secret from those around her. And the resolution is way too easy for the protagonists, who barely have to do anything to win against overwhelming odds. The book tries to make this into a message about the fragility of rule by fear, but it’s not that deep a book. Overall, a huge step down from the first book, and a decent step down from the second.

disappointing ending
The entire story just ends.
I wanted a little more about what life was like when they were settled. But we got nothing. It's a big build up for zilch

More excellence from JB
Rupert brings JB's world to life with his narration.
Bloody ace, thank you both.

Awesome trilogy
Loved this series. Very believable senario and fightening to think humanity could actually end up in this situation. Makes me want to learn how to feed myself and shoot.

You've already read it elsewhere.
The bad guys are cool, the heroes are boring, and nothing here is original.
The writer just doesn't understand people well enough to make them interesting.

just kill me!
a real anti climax and very much an over stuffed book end to a trilogy that should have encompassed only two installments. I am left feeling severely underwhelmed ☹
