Publisher's Summary

A killer running rings around the police. A detective spiralling out of control.

DI Kate Young is on leave. She’s the force’s best detective, but her bosses know she’s under pressure, on medication and overcoming trauma. So after her bad judgement call leads to a narrowly averted public disaster, they’re sure all she needs is a rest.

But when Staffordshire Police summon her back to work on a murder case, it’s a harder, more suspicious Kate Young who returns. With a new ruthlessness, she sets about tracking down a clinical, calculating serial killer who is torturing victims and leaving clues to taunt the police. Spurred on by her reporter husband, Young begins to suspect that the murderer might be closer than she ever imagined.

As she works to uncover the truth, Young unravels a network of secrets and lies, with even those closest to her having something to hide. But with her own competence - and her grip on reality - called into question, can she unmask the killer before they strike again?

Not this narrator

I really wanted to listen to this, but I knew as soon as I heard this narrator that I couldn’t. I recognized her voice from another story I had to stop. Her narration of non-dialogue passages is too much for me. It’s clipped and overly-anxious and a smidge too loud — I assume to convey the anxiety. Yes, it’s a crime novel, but 8 hours of anxious descriptive passages is too much. She’s just one of those voices that doesn’t work for me.

Nope

Couldn't get to chapter 2. Narrator just spoiled it for me. Can't comment on the story.

Looking Forward to more Kate Young.

Fortunately I purchased both the ebook and audiobook of this title. The story is compelling with many twists and turns. There are also a few surprises that will keep you guessing to the end. Carol Wyer wrote a great story and I'm anticipating more great mysteries in this Kate Young series. My only problem was with the audiobook. The narration was not good. The narrator read this story in clipped, choppy sentences and in a pitch that was grating. I don't know what went wrong, but this made it extremely difficult to listen to. I finally finished the story with the ebook only.

Narrator's voice made it unbearable.

20 mins in and I was in pain, narrator's voice is tinny and nasal. I think I'll read the book for myself.

Hard to tell

Unfortunately I don't feel ready to review. I thought it was a little confusing. Things didn't come together, as far as I could tell. I will, however, go ahead and read the next in this series. Maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised!

Accent Problem

The narrator made the character Faith sound more like she had an Indian acent rather that that of an English speaker from Zimbabwe.

Slow Paced

A slow paced story. I enjoyed it until the heroine started talking to the ghost of her dead husband. She blamed the prescription meds… yet no one was concerned that she was hallucinating? The heroine flipped so quickly from struggling with PTSD and grief to the tough ass cop. A bit disappointing… let’s see what book two is like before I give up on this author altogether. Part of the Kindle Unlimited catalog.

Doesn’t hang together well

I found this story frustrating. The “big reveal” becomes apparent to the reader/listener so long before the protagonist gets there that it becomes annoying. Too many dots that should be connected along the way by are missed. I’m not a huge fan of the narrator’s tone of voice, but if the story is engaging I stop noticing. This one wasn’t engaging enough. It wasn’t an awful story, but if there are more in the series I’ll pass.

Dreadful narrator

The worst I have ever heard! I have over 500 audible books and all of Carol Wyer’s and this is by far the most awful narration.

Do not buy as you won’t be able to listen to her!

Who chose this narrator?

Currently on chapter 23 of 50-something and STILL can’t get over this narrator’s bizarre tone/rhythm/inflection! Funnily enough all the dialogue is fine, but when it’s just the text it’s distracting how the book is read. The narrator puts a weird emphasis on every second symbol like she’s reading a really long beat poem, and goes up at the end of every single sentence. It’s infuriating and distracting! Leaves you wondering who on Earth chose her for this book, not suited at all.

The story is good, a bit Val McDermid but the characters are definitely not as well developed as Val’s. I find the main character a bit annoying, a bit trope-y, but overall the story has been good enough to mean I’ll keep going despite the annoying narration!

Had to switch off....awful narration

Have no idea if good story or reciting protagonist. Had to stop listening to awful narration and it made me dislike the detective. May try the book and read myself.

Narrator was extremely irritating with her clipped tones and voice, however I kept going but wouldn’t chose another book with that narrator.

I really wanted to like this, but…

This has all the feel of a first novel to me, so I will try to be gentle. For a start, congrats to the author for completing it and getting it out there. That’s a big achievement in itself.

That said, I have to say that the book has some issues - I listened to it as an audiobook, and was frequently frustrated by mispronunciations, and some of the characterisation felt so badly off that it was hard to find the heroine sympathetic, or indeed anyone else in the book.

The story isn’t bad, although I guessed the killer fairy early on, but one thing that really lets it down is inappropriate vocabulary choices where it feels like the author has tried to find words that sound more intellectual, but which are used in such a way that they just grate. I wish the author had the confidence to just write in natural language, because it feels like this caused her to stumble and the book would have been better for it.

Overall, not a bad way to pass the time on a car journey, and hopefully there’ll be some improvement for the next in the series.

No!

Really struggling with this, although I listened to the first book. Narrator is far too fast and either very “breathy” or sounds like the queen, no offence to THE Queen! It just isn’t in keeping with the character. I tried to keep going for the sake of the potential story but when the main character called a grown man “big man”, no!

Very confusing

I absolutely love this author but this book was so difficult to follow. There were so many characters which meant I was totally confused throughout the book. There should be a guide for a book like this with a list of characters and their relationships to each other. It was so hard to concentrate as many parts were quite boring and my mind just wanted to wander. I kept having to rewind parts to force myself to listen. I rarely give up on books so I persevered.
Certain things were obvious immediately. One I won’t say as I don’t want to give away spoilers. I did guess early on who was the murderer. I ended up sympathising with the murderer as the victims were utterly vile individuals who got what they deserved. They really did deserve to be tortured. I was disappointed some of them survived. I understand the ending sets the narrative for future books. At some point I’ll listen to the next one in the series as it seems to have much better reviews.
Also the train scenes started to get boring and I found myself switching off. I know the main character had been through a very traumatic event and was damaged mentally but I just got sick of her rather than feeling any sympathy.
Also the narrator isn’t the best for this character. She has a very high pitched tone to her voice and it was a bit grating. There are other narrators that could have done a better job and been more suited to this story.

Couldn’t get past chapter 2. The narrator’s voice is just too jarring

What a shame. Normally love Carol Wyer but I’m unable to persevere with this one. The reader’s voice is just too jarring. Not a comfortable listen at all.

I usually enjoy Carol Wyer's work - but not now!

I have have had at least 6 goes at listening to this book and l have never got passed the beginning of Chapter 3. I feel like throwing the Tablet - it is the voice - no way can this person read. She has killed it dead for me to the point I simply cannot tolerate to listen at all My reaction is visceral.

Sorry Carol Wyer.

As a huge fan of Carol Wyers other series, I was excited to see this one. It did however take me a while to get into this one but it was worth sticking with it because it turned out to be a great story! On to the next!

Story quite inventive but spoilt by narrator

I struggled with this book due to the voice(s) of the narrator. I finished it but won't be rushing to buy any more. The plot was reasonable although I think I had worked it out by the mid point. I found the main character whiny and annoying but that was probably due to the voice.
