During the languid days of the Christmas break, a group of 30-something friends from Oxford meets to welcome in the New Year together, a tradition they began as students 10 years ago. For this vacation, they’ve chosen an idyllic and isolated estate in the Scottish Highlands - the perfect place to get away and unwind by themselves. The white-washed Italian villa is perfect. I thought it might feel odd, living in a stranger’s house for the summer, but as my husband and children swim in the infinity pool, I start to relax. And then, in the back of a wardrobe, I find something that shatters everything.... Sparkling green eyes, square jaw, lopsided smile. A young man with his arm around a beautiful woman. The picture is old and faded, but I’d recognize him anywhere. The man is my husband.

Publisher's Summary
An instant New York Times best seller!
The twisty new thriller from the New York Times best-selling author of The Couple Next Door and A Stranger in the House.
A weekend retreat at a cozy mountain lodge is supposed to be the perfect getaway...but when the storm hits, no one is getting away.
It's winter in the Catskills and Mitchell's Inn, nestled deep in the woods, is the perfect setting for a relaxing - maybe even romantic - weekend away. It boasts spacious old rooms with huge wood-burning fireplaces, a well-stocked wine cellar, and opportunities for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, or just curling up with a good murder mystery.
So when the weather takes a turn for the worse, and a blizzard cuts off the electricity - and all contact with the outside world - the guests settle in and try to make the best of it.
Soon, though, one of the guests turns up dead - it looks like an accident. But when a second guest dies, they start to panic. Within the snowed-in paradise, something - or someone - is picking off the guests one by one. And there's nothing they can do but hunker down and hope they can survive the storm - and one another.
Critic Reviews
“A new thriller that will give you serious Agatha Christie vibes...if you’re one of the many people who counts [And Then There Were None] among their favorite books, you will love An Unwanted Guest...A deftly crafted and expertly paced thriller that will keep readers guessing (and terrified) until the very end.” (Bustle)
“Proving that time periods may change but people do not, Lapena delivers a solid whodunit with an ending that would make Dame Christie proud.” (USA Today)
“This compelling and realistic modern take on the country-house mystery will gain new fans for the author and is definitely one to hand to devotees of Agatha Christie and her modern interpreter, Sophie Hannah).” (Booklist)
“[A] well-sculpted domestic thriller...highly suspenseful...Twists are subtly revealed with aplomb, taking the story to increasingly unpredictable levels.” (The Associated Press)

One of the best books yet!!
I am a huge fan of Shari Lapena! I get sucked into every book she writes but THIS BOOK is by far the best one yet!!! It had me sucked in like a movie, envisioning every little thing that happened! It was like going to a murder mystery and then just when you think the end of the book is near and they’ve revealed everything, she throws an awesome curve ball at the end!! I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who loves a good murder mystery and mind teaser! It will have you guessing until the very end!! This book would make an amazing movie!!!!! Thank you Shari Lapena for writing yet another amazing spellbinding book!!!

Lapena Does It Again!
I love Shari Lapena's books, so when I saw An Unwanted Guest was available for pre-order, I immediately spent my monthly credit and waited for its release...and waited...and waited!! Today it was finally released! Yay! I spent the entire day listening to it non-stop, and I have no regrets whatsoever! It is a little different from her other books - instead of being a domestic thriller, it follows a murder mystery theme. The characters consist of multiple individuals, singles and couples, who are spending the weekend at a lodge. Some are there for a romantic getaway, while others are not, but either way, due to the weather taking a turn for the worse, the group quickly goes from not knowing one another to all being in the same boat...actually, the same lodge, but you get the picture. :-) One by one, the bodies start to pile up, leaving everyone wondering if the killer is one of them, or if someone from the outside has joined them without their knowledge. Unable to battle the storm, they have no choice but to wait it out and pray one of them isn't the next victim. The problem is, with no internet, no cell phones, and no electricity, no one knows to come save them.
I thoroughly enjoyed this mystery from start to finish, and it left me guessing all the way up to the big reveal. Lapena is a master of those last minute kickers, too. No worries, she has one for you at the very end. Although there are a few murders throughout the book, it is not a bloody or gory listen by any means, for those of you who were maybe worried about feeling queasy. There are quite a few characters, though, so listen closely! Knowing what I do now, I may go back and re-listen to see if I can pick up some of the clues I missed the first time through. If you like a good whodunnit mystery, you will love An Unwanted Guest. Everything is so well written, leaving no loose ends. It is super engaging, kept me on the edge of my seat, and is 100% unpredictable. I loved it!
Hillary Huber's performance as narrator was excellent. This is my first time listening to her, and I have no complaints. Her smooth voice and calm demeanor were the perfect balance for the suspenseful storyline. She kept a great pace, and her consistent tone made for a completely easy and enjoyable listen. While I'm sure the book is great, I'm so happy I decided to listen to the audiobook because her Huber's performance made my overall experience that much better.
I loved the audiobook An Unwanted Guest by Shari Lapena, narrated by Hillary Huber, and I give it a rating of 5/5 stars across the board. Fans of suspense, mysteries, and thrillers will be hooked immediately and want to listen straight through. It definitely gives any murder mystery I've ever listened to a run for its money! I give it my high recommendation...you will not be disappointed.
Thank you for reading my review. I hope it was helpful. :-)

The voice of the narrator was had to get used to. At times her voice sounded artificial. I had to get beyond her voice to get into the story.

So disappointed - DNF at 2hrs 57 minutes
I just couldn't do it anymore!!
This is the first book I've ever listened to by Shari Lapena. I tried to read The Couple Next Door and having a daughter under two myself, my anxiety got the better of me and I couldn't enjoy it so I put it away for good.
When I saw An Wanted Guest pop up on my new releases, I was immediately intrigued by the story, put it ahead of other books I've had waiting in my queue, and was hoping for a cozy whodunit mystery to satisfy my craving for cooler weather (I hate summer) just in time for September to roll in. That's not what I got with this book. At all. Instead I was met with an mediocre story that failed to hold my attention for more than two minutes. The characters were cliche, uninteresting, and just plain unlikable. There was nobody I was rooting for. Nobody I connected with. Nobody that made things even remotely interesting... and I'm not sure if it was entirely Lapena's fault.
The narration and editing for this book was god awful. GOD. AWFUL. If I could give it zero stars, I would. I can't think of a more accurate way to describe it. It was like listening to a robot attempt to add life into already wooden characters and failing miserably. No emotion, no change in tone or timbre no matter the scene or conversation, no storytelling quality whatsoever.
I think having it read by Siri or a bot would've made it sound more interesting.
She sounded incredibly bored the entire time, even during the parts that I believe were SUPPOSED to be exciting and suspenseful. The few times she TRIED to differentiate and add something to certain dialogue, it came off annoying, forced, , and didn't fit with what was going on at all. If you're going to do something like attempt to add different voices for different characters, commit to it fully or don't do it at all otherwise it comes off sounding like this. It was excruciating and ultimately is the number one reason I did not finish this book.
As for the book itself, I wasn't impressed. Like I said above, I was super disappointed, as it lacked the suspense and edge-of-my seat quality I have gotten with other murder mysteries. Given the setting, there was so much potential for a very gripping story line and instead it was blah. People meandering around, getting food, having uninteresting conversations with each other, staring at each other and it being narrated about BADLY for two solid minuets - that type of slow-moving conversation that makes for a difficult read to enjoy. I foundLapena's writing to be juvenile - I felt that it often read like fan fiction. "She says..." "He says..." It sounded like a high school literature project. This was only made worse by the terrible narration.
Overall, I wasn't wild about the story. Hated the narration. Didn't care of the writing style. Didn't finish it. Shari Lapena, this is where we part ways. And Hillary Huber, I would suggest taking acting lessons. Lots of them.

Excruciating
If I weren’t so stubborn, I would’ve just quit after the first 10 minutes of listening to the narrator. It was excruciating listening to her! The plot, to me, got pretty ridiculous. Without spoiling it for those that want to try out this book, I’ll just say that there were a lot of eye rolls and “What the heck?!?” that went through my mind. I persevered, and actually finished the book. The ending was alright, but not enough to give it another star.

Could have been good.....
but the writing is just awful. The premise of the story is reminiscent of vintage Agatha Christie, but this author seriously needs a good editor or a course in writing. There is no style, the prose is flat, the characters lifeless. Unfortunately, the narration is pretty flat, too. ( I'm guessing the narrator struggled to add any life to this inept writing.) I stuck with it only to find out "who dun it". Disappointing.
