Publisher's Summary

A BBC Radio 4 full-cast dramatisation of a classic Agatha Christie mystery, starring Lyndsey Marshal, Geoffrey Whitehead, and John Rowe.

Ten guests travel to an island at the invitation of someone named U. N. Owen. All are strangers, but they have two things in common: they have all been responsible for someone's death, and none will leave the island alive. Over the next two days and nights, each of the guests is killed off in a different manner in keeping with the nursery rhyme, 'Ten Little Soldier Boys'. As they are picked off one by one, who could possibly be responsible?

The killers are forced to turn detective so they can find the unknown murderer, but one by one they become victims.

Billed as 'the famous detective story without a detective', And Then There Were None is one of Agatha Christie's darkest and most enduring tales.

They Re-wrote the book!

I understand that some abridgement was to be expected in the interest of saving time, but to completely re-write important sections of the book? If I had wanted to purchase a different story, I wouldn't have purchased this one. Reader beware, some liberties have been taken which may or may not be appreciated.
I own the unabridged narration of this story, and thought that a dramatized version would be nice, but this is a totally different story altogether. Ten Little Soldiers? They were Indians, but I guess political correctness got in the way. And there was no conversation between Vera and the Judge at the end of the book. There are other references to the Judge wondering if there is a God. I don't recall seeing that in the book, so that must be part of someone's agenda. And the same company has released a ton of these Agatha Christie books! Shame on the publisher, and shame on Audible for putting this "book" out. If I could get my money back, I would. With interest. I only gave it one star because Audible made me. With interest, Audible!

didn't realize it was so short.

used a credit and instead of the book, it's a radio adaptation and was over in one or two days driving to work. it's my own fault, but would have preferred the full version. I expect books to be at least 4+ hours. was rather shocked when this was over

One Little Soldier...

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, I would. It was an enjoyable book and a nice piece of pure Christie escapism.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I rather liked Vera, perhaps because the actress who performed her was so skilled.

What about the narrators’s performance did you like?

This is yet another fine radio adaptation with a full cast, like an old-time radio show.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Moved, no, but I loved the end.

Personally, don't prefer the dramatization

I tried this out - since a friend gave it a 5 star review. I have been listening to audio books all year - and this was a dramatization - from a BBC radio program. I thoroughly enjoyed the added sound effects that helped to create the scene. However, I was getting lost between the different actors/voices and I think I would have preferred to hear the original. Overall, I liked the story - and I will give Agatha Christie another try. I just think I will look for the actual book version next time, instead of the dramatization.

Best audio version yet!

Fast-paced and capturing the sense of the tightening noose makes this a perfect rendition.

Horrible depressing story

Performance was fine but the story was absolutely horrid. So sad and depressing. I would absolutely never recommend this book to anyone ever.

READ THE DESCRIPTION!

I see a number of complaints about this title which could have been easily solved by simply reading the description before buying.

It clearly states that this a BBC Radio Dramatization. The short time (in comparison to a full audiobook) should make it obvious this is not the unabridged novel.

The description doesn’t explain the changes to the story, but in a dramatization such things are to be expected. More to the point, the changes to the novel are changes Christie herself made when she adapted it as a play. I imagine most Christie aficionados already knew that.

As to “political correctness” dictating the change - originally the rhyme at the center of the story repeatedly used the N-word (and yes, that was included in earlier versions of this story). The story has updated with the rhyme, so “Soldier Boys” is perfectly appropriate.

As to the audio play itself, it’s not my favorite adaptation, but it’s well enough done and even knowing the solution it remains one of the greatest mysteries of all time. I’d recommend going for the unabridged novel, personally, (especially if this is your first experience of the story) but I enjoy these dramatizations too.

And Then There Were None

This is a dramatisation of Agatha Christie's novel, and it's very effective and enjoyable. The characters are well portrayed by the actors and it's easy to tell all of them apart. The incidental music and background effects (seagulls, the sea) add to the tension and build up the suspense. The audio creates a claustrophobic atmosphere that really complements the story.

Very Rushed!

Love cast dramatisations so when I saw this to download I was very excited as it is my favourite Agatha Christie story but after listening to it I felt this was just too rushed! I wasn’t a fan of the ending either, I prefer the 1945 film ending! Was good overall but not as good as I was hoping it to be.

It's AC - what's not to love!

An atmospheric performance of one AC's finest pieces.
Spine-chilling sound effects as the tone of the story is captured and the body count keeps on rising.

Stick to unabridged for this one

Excellent story, but ridiculously rushed. Mostly good voice acting, though choosing the kid as the narrator was a terrible choice. Basically just listen to an unabridged version.

So Good!

I remember watching the old black and white film many years ago so when I found this on audible I just had to listen to it and I was not disappointed. It has an amazing cast that did an excellent job, it took me back all those years and it was as if I was watching the film all over again but in my head. I really enjoyed it and will definitely listen to it again and also recommend it to others.

Her masterpiece, too short

As this is well documented as one of AC’s masterpieces, I would have expected a longer, more drawn out play to echo its importance. It was very well done but I would have hoped for more development and felt the ‘fear factor’ never arrived as it did so atmospherically in the book.

Wonderful adaptation

Like so many of us, I have read the book and watched the film and Television adaptations. I confess to being slightly underwhelmed by them all.
This audio version, however, brings the whole story to life, and takes it to a much higher level.
The voices are easy to distinguish, the acting is excellent, and the background sound effects are well chosen and add depth to the drama.
Highly highly recommended

Loved this book Version!

I have never been a book reading person because I’m quite slow at reading, but I absolutely loved this book because I love everything murder mystery related!!! I really enjoyed the dramatised part of it too, the acting was great and I could really picture it all in my head. My favourite part was that I could listen to it while in my car and feel like I’m watching a TV show! Highly recommend :)
