Publisher's Summary

When two teenagers break into a house on a remote lake in search of prescription drugs, what starts as a simple burglary turns into a nightmare for all involved. Emmett Burr has secrets he's been keeping in his basement for more than two decades, and he'll do anything to keep his past from being revealed. As he gets the upper hand on his tormentors, the lines blur between victim, abuser, and protector.

Personal tragedy has sent former police officer Ben Packard back to the small Minnesota town of Sandy Lake in search of a fresh start. Now a sheriff's deputy, Packard is leading the investigation into the missing teens, motivated by a family connection. As clues dry up and time runs out to save them, Packard is forced to reveal his own secrets and dig deep to uncover the dark past of the place he now calls home.

Unrelentingly suspenseful and written with a piercing gaze into the dark depths of the human soul, this thriller introduces listeners to a complicated new hero and forces us to consider the true nature of evil.

Meh…

Had potential, but way too much time was spent diving into the details of an interracial gay relationship which frankly didn’t add anything to the story.

Exceptional Debut!

I loved it! Looking forward to more from this author. Small town Minnesota, just like where I grew up. Shows you we never really know who someone is.

Legit

Loved it. Looks like a beach read but it’s legitimately great. The narrator was fantastic. Can’t wait for the sequel. There better be a sequel. Dt Packard rules so hard.

Good start for a debut writer

Intended to be the first in a series? Ending left room for this but is a stand alone novel. Characters likable. Bad guy almost could be pitied citing some possibility open for remorse but this is lost once his current crime and past evils spill out. Although beginning slow (as noted by another reviewer) the story quickly engages the listener. Then the plot not so original but different enough moves a long at a quick pace and suitably horrifying for this kind of novel/genre.

Most of the story is told from the pov of the protagonist and antagonist. Not sure I would listen to this again. Would listen to a second in a series.

Narrator good although a bit slick.

So-so

It was just ok. I almost quit listening several times but I truly hoped it would get better but it was just very bland.
