Story
On Halloween 1963, 11-year-old Chuck Coolidge and his brother, Danny, are lost in a toxic smog covering the steel town of Slippery Elm, Pennsylvania. When the smog lifts, half the town is sick, and 20 people are dead. And Danny is missing. Now, more than 20 years later, Chuck's teenage daughter, Frank, plots her escape from this "busted and disgusted" town. When a murdered child is found in the river, investigators link the crime to the disappearance of Danny in '63, and Frank's life is turned upside down. In the face of her worst fears, she must uncover her family's dark past.

Years ago, the SS Arcadia vanished without a trace during a routine voyage. Though a garbled emergency message was broadcast, neither the ship nor any of its crew could be found. Sixty years later, its wreck has finally been discovered more than 300 miles from its intended course...a silent graveyard deep beneath the ocean's surface. Cove and her dive team have been granted permission to explore the Arcadia's rusting hull. Their purpose is straightforward: examine the wreck, film everything, and, if possible, uncover how and why the supposedly unsinkable ship vanished.

Publisher's Summary
A stunning, terrifying novel about a house the color of blood and the two sisters who are trapped there, by The Dead House author Dawn Kurtagich
When Silla and Nori arrive at their aunt's home, it's immediately clear that the "blood manor" is cursed. The creaking of the house and the stillness of the woods surrounding them would be enough of a sign, but there are secrets, too - the questions that Silla can't ignore: Who is the beautiful boy who's appeared from the woods? Who is the man her little sister sees, but no one else? And why does it seem that ever since they arrived, the trees have been creeping closer?
Filled with just as many twists and turns as The Dead House, and with achingly beautiful, chilling language that delivers haunting scenes, And the Trees Crept In is the perfect follow-up novel for master horror writer Dawn Kurtagich.

Whiplash!
I eagerly read this book after having read - and thoroughly loved - Kurtagich's debut, "The Dead House." Both books are sufficiently creepy, with powerful language and stunning performances. Both move back and forth through time, with loose threads dangling at the end.
However, where "The Dead House" succeeded in shifting back and forth through time, "And the Trees Crept In" just left me thoroughly wrung out and confused. It shifts forward and back through time, almost like a fast-paced movie, with no way to know what is real and what is fantasy. The ending did make the middle make sense, but I almost didn't get there.
Polly Lee's performance actually MADE this book completely worth reading. Kurtagich's gift of language and poignant relationships couldn't completely carry this book.
It's a creepy, spooky story, including music and sound effects, well-performed... and yet it had too much of... something, and I'm not sure what.

Narrator brings the trees to life
The story felt a little abstract to me, like simple sounds and words floating inside a haunted manor. It lacked concreteness and wasn't always the most logical of stories. However, the narration of the story really brought the horror aspect of And The Trees Crept In to life. I will definitely be looking into more audiobooks narrated by Polly Lee.

The best narrator performace on audible
This is, without a doubt, the best book I've listened to on audible. I can not recommend it highly enough. The writing style is sophisticated, but still digestible, and incredibly beautiful. The story carries some old horror tropes, but offers them up in such a unique way you don't care. The stand out of the experience is Polly Lee's acting. It's not narration but acting. There are few voices in the story, but they are easily discernible through accent, tone, and intensity. There isn't a missed beat, or over acted part. It's not someone reading you a story, It's someone telling you a terrifying first hand account of a massively life altering experience. It's so well done it feels like Dawn Kurtagich wrote the book for Polly Lee to perform. It's on the same level as Marlon Brando in Godfather, or Freddie Mercury fronting Queen, It's like she was always meant to do this.

Felt compelled to review
I've always been a huge fan of psychological thrillers and this audiobook takes the cake. For once an audiobook is read like a movie. There are several narrators which sometimes speak at once, giving a chilling, haunting backdrop for your imagination.
Cilla is a 17 year old girl living with her younger sister an aunt in a haunting manor in the middle of Python Woods. As the story unfolds in a web of past and present as listener gets sucked in to this dark, chilling novel.
