I left a big-city police department for a fresh start in a smaller town. Less crime. Less murder. But three months later, I’ve been handed the murder investigation of the most hated man in town. The list of potential suspects is as long as Santa’s naughty list, but one name keeps popping up. Maddie Baker. She’s infuriating as hell, but is she a cold-blooded murderer? My instincts tell me no, yet I can’t exactly trust those. The last time I let myself presume someone was innocent, I ended up with a bullet wound and a broken heart.

A left at the door review of Trouble with Witches

By: Kristen Painter
Publisher's Summary
Sent away because she let someone die, her burgeoning powers leave her with more questions than answers. Now her only chance for redemption comes at a price; one she may not survive.
As a trauma nurse in a New York City hospital, Ella St. John had no idea that refusing to help a known killer would have such dire consequences. Being sent to the middle of nowhere is bad enough, but when she crosses paths with a handsome stranger, everything changes. She can't deny the attraction blossoming between them, but that is nothing compared to the trouble he brings to her door. Helping him could be the biggest mistake of her life...if she manages to live long enough to regret it.
From the author of the Shelby Nichols Adventures, comes a new series that will plunge a woman with growing powers into the dark world of mystery, murder, and death.
Perfect for fans of John Irving, Amy Harmon, Sarah Penner, Glendy Vanderah, V.E. Schwab, and Amanda Lee.

New series from Colleen Helm....
This is the first book in a new series by Colleen Helm, the author of the Shelby Nichols series. This is a fun book but it does have some mysterious religious overtones. I thoroughly enjoyed the story but I have to say Shelby has it all over the protagonist in this book. Speaking of Shelby, she does make an appearance in this book as well, along with Ramos and Uncle Joey.
Stevi Incremona does a great job narrating.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

I'm not a fan of paranormal fiction unless the delightful Colleen Helme writes it. I hope the wonderful Shelby Nichols series continues as the Sand and Shadows series (with its protagonist Ella St. John) takes off. Fans of the Shelby Nichols series may remember healing nurse Ella St. John from Dying Wishes (Book 14 in the series), It's no surprise that Shelby Nichols along with Ramos and Uncle Joey make an appearance in ANGEL FALLS. I had never heard of narrator Stevi Incremona but she does a great job.
If you have not read any of Coleen Helms books the place to start is with Book 1 in the Shelby Nichols with its offbeat title Carrots. Ms. Helme never disappoints!

A Shelby Nichols Spin Off You'll Love!
My top thoughts:
So I met Ella when I read Ghostly Serenade in the Shelby Nichols series (which I love and highly recommend) and the minute we met her I was like, OMG she needs her own series! And guess what? Colleen had the same great idea! When I got the email that it was out on audio I about squealed and I am not disappointed. I should note that while this is a spin off and will have some nice crossovers for fans of the Shelby Nichols series, you absolutely can read it on it's own.
What I liked/didn't like:
In fact, this has very little in common with the Shelby Nichols series -- at one point, it felt so different, I wondered if we would actually get any crossovers. Ella does not live near to or function in the same world as Shelby and, unlike Shelby, she's young and single with no kids. So the tone is different for sure. And her paranormal gift is quite different from Shelby's too - instead of reading minds, Ella has "healing hands" - she's able to help people heal through her touch. That's how she and Shelby met initially actually. Ella was a trauma nurse in NY helping a victim that Shelby was working with the police to find out what happened to them. In the course of that investigation, the man who had assaulted the victim came into the hospital and Ella refused to use her gift to save him.
And that's where this book picks up - Ella has been punished for not using her gift to help and sent to the middle of nowhere (gorgeous, but challenging for someone use to the bustle of NYC) to run a small clinic. And when she's out exploring nature she runs into - literally - Creed. He's full of mystery and in need of her healing hands. He pulls her into his world and the consequences are life changing for both of them.
I enjoyed the characters a great deal - Ella is sweet and way too trusting IMO (I was a little disbelieving that a NYC girl would trust a stranger the way she does... but maybe that's the protected life growing up in the church showing through?), but she also has an edge to her that I think will potentially be interesting as the series progresses. And Creed is a good counter to her, he's lived on the edge and touched the dark side of the world. But they are both young and ready to take on the world, which could be exciting in future books - especially given how things wrapped up in this book. I don't want to spoil anything but Ella's healing hands and purpose really developed a lot over the course of the book and I'm really interested to see where things will go.
Narrator thoughts:
As for the narration, I really enjoyed it as well. Stevi Incremona did a great job with the characters, and while it was different hearing Shelby from her interpretation, I could easily see/hear the same Shelby I've come to love. So I look forward to continuing this series in audio. And I really hope for more Shelby/Ella crossovers (which we're definitely setup to have as a possibility)!

It was exciting to go through their adventures. Great book to start the series and I'm looking forward to more. Stevie Incremona did a wonderful job narrating as well! Wow. Great start to a new series!
Wow. This is a wonderful book to start off a series I'm now excited to continue with.
Ella has healing hands, though it's a bit more than that. It also grows as the book goes, after she hit Creed with her car in a storm. Such a great duo.
Ella and Creed needed each other in so many ways. They challenge each other and help each other through the difficult troubled times they are in. There's some danger and action, but there's tender moments that grow them as characters, individuals, and as a couple. Both have their insecurities to work through, and doing it together is something beautiful to read.
There is a touch of religion in the book, it's Ella's history with her dad being a Father of the church. I love when religion is part of the book and has a solid purpose in the story. It does here, and ties many things together when we get to the end of the book. Don't be afraid of the book preaching to you, that's NOT the case.
Creed... *sigh* Colleen has this way of writing delicious men. Yes, delicious. They check all the right boxes. Creed is going to become the newest Book Boyfriend around.
I listened to this book. This is a first for me listening to Stevi Incremona. When I started listening, I feared Stevi was speaking slow. But I fell into her pace and it became Ella's voice as I listened. Ella was in need of her getaway, and I think I struggled with her frustration and laid back speech at the beginning. But when Ella (the character) relaxed and fell into her element, all fit perfectly. She was easy to understand and the audio was clear.

I found the story good but was really impressed by the narrator! (Stevi Incremona) Her voice made this book. She has a smooth sound with a beautiful tone and just drew me into the story. I think I would actually chose a book based on her performing it.

Great
I really enjoy Colleen Helm's books and this one did not disappoint. It is unusual story that keeps you gripped and I liked the characters. I especially enjoyed the little cameo from the Shelby books. It is well narrated (personally her voice was a little slow for me but I just speed up the narration a little). All in all very enjoyable.

Loved it!
I love the Shelby Nichols adventures books and we first met Ella St John in one of Shelbys adventures.
Ella has a gift. She has healing hands so when she grew up the obvious profession for her was to become a nurse.
But when she decided to let a criminal die her father a priest at the St John church decided she needed to go away and think about her decision. So Ella has spent the last few months at Sandy Falls a small town in the middle of nowhere. She has a small medical centre that she runs for the town's people.
But while driving home in the middle of a rain storm she hits someone with her car. This act is going to change her life forever.
I really enjoyed this first book in the Sand and Shadows series. If you haven't read them check out Carrots and the other Shelby Nichols adventures books they're equally as brilliant as this one.I loved that Shelby ,Ramos and Uncle Joey make an appearance too.
The narration was beautifully done and you could believe it was Ella speaking to you about her life. Highly recommended. I received a free copy of this book from the author but the opinion expressed is my own.

I can't tell you how much I enjoyed this book!!
I read it on release day and also gave audible a shot. It is narrated with the perfect level of emotion and emphasis. I was s little wary that it would be overplayed but that was not the case and the story was able to stand on its own. I cant wait for the next installment to see what's in store for Ella and obviously for shelby next book.
This was my first audio book and though I can see how people enjoy it I think I prefer the characters voices in my head LOL.
well done Colleen, another victory! 😁❤

I loved it!
Ella St John is a mystery, even to herself, so when Aiden Creed crashes into her life and things within her start to change, she knows she needs to find out why. I just love this first book in the new Sand And Shadows series with its fantastic characters and the exciting, fanciful and suspense filled storyline that Stevi Incremona brought to life beautifully. It’s an absolute must read!

Excellent story well told
An excellent story that is beautifully performed and really keeps you hooked. I can’t wait to see where the author takes the characters next. Loved the little cameo by Shelby & co!

Heaven sent
This book was slow to start and I was beginning to get a little disappointed because it was nothing like the authors Shelby Nichols series (which I just love) and was looking more like a romance book but it soon heated up (and I don't just mean the romance side). I ended up hooked and loving it, I can't wait for the next book. We met Ella in one of the Shelby books (Ghostly Serenade and it was a stroke of genius for Shelby and the gang to have a little cameo appearance in this book, as it tied both series together. Ella and Creed's story was interesting, how they went from strangers and not trusting each other to giving there lives for each other, in the most dramatic of ways and bad guy's and deception soon came out of the wood work I like the characters and think like Shelby, Ella's powers really adds to the story. Can't wait for the next book.
Ella is struggling with coming to terms with her new life, after being a busy trauma nurse the sleep little village where the worse she sees is cut and bruises is driving her crazy. One mistake shouldn't cost her so much, okay maybe she would still do it again but she just wants to go home. Then nearly killing a man in a heavy rain storm changes her life. Using her healing hands on him changes something inside her and she finds herself caught up in his world and troubles. Is Creed on the ran from someone? Just what are the secrets he is keeping and why won't he let his duffle bag out of his sight? The stakes are high can Ella help Creed? Or is it she who needs the help.
I am glad the author went with a different narrator for this book because I am so use to the Shelby narrator as Shelby that I think it would be off putting trying to picture a different character. Also Stevi Incremona does a great job with Ella.
I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
