Story
There is now no doubt that not only is Waiting for Godot the outstanding play of the 20th century, but it is also Samuel Beckett's masterpiece. Yet it is both a popular text to be studied at school and an enigma. The scene is a country road. There is a solitary tree. It is evening. Two tramp-like figures, Vladimir and Estragon, exchange words. Pull off boots. Munch a root vegetable. Two other curious characters enter. And a boy. Time passes. It is all strange yet familiar.

Bryan Cranston landed his first role at seven, when his father, a struggling actor and director, cast him in a United Way commercial. Soon Bryan was haunting the local movie theater, memorizing and reenacting favorite scenes with his older brother. Acting was clearly the boy's destiny - until one day his father disappeared. Suddenly destiny took a backseat to survival. Seeking something more stable, perhaps subconsciously trying to distance himself from his absent father, Cranston decided on a career in law enforcement.

Publisher's Summary
Presenting an original audiobook performance of the Pulitzer Prize-winning play, starring the cast of the National Theatre's 2018 Broadway revival.
In this production, adapted especially for the listening experience, Andrew Garfield, Nathan Lane, and the entire cast recreate their acclaimed performances from the 2018 Tony Award-winning National Theatre revival of Angels in America: A Gay Fantasia on National Themes. With narration by Bobby Cannavale and Edie Falco, and a musical score by Adrian Sutton, this audiobook is a compelling and immersive theatrical listening experience.
A play in two parts, "Millennium Approaches" and "Perestroika", Angels in America: A Gay Fantasia on National Themes is a complex and insightful look into identity, community, justice, and redemption.
New Yorkers grapple with life and death, love and sex, and heaven and hell as the AIDS crisis intensifies during a time of political reaction - the Reagan Republican counterrevolution of the 1980s.
Published to celebrate the Broadway revival, this is a unique opportunity to hear one of the most honored and timeless plays in American history.

Perfect Storytelling
I saw the show on Broadway in June 2018 right before it closed. This cast brings Tony Kushner’s iconic work magically, perfectly to life. When this Audi book production was announced, I immediately pre-ordered it. While it’s not the same experience as a theater production (obviously), it’s damn close. Andrew Garfield’s Prior Walter breaks my heart now just as much as during the play. Nathan Lane’s Roy Cohn is despicable and pathetic. Denise Gough’s Harper Pitt is amazingly fragile and powerful at the same time. I love this Audible production. It’s everything I hoped it would be.

Lacking something
If there is a live recording of this production I would watch it in a heartbeat. Unfortunately the recording lacks the live energy that would make it a great listen. Before you tell me it is a recording and to get over it, consider all the excellent pieces being put out by LA theatre works. It is done and it works.
Already these talented actors are up against memories of great performances in the HBO production. Taking away that live energy as well as the visuals just makes it fall flat. The narration only interrupts the stream of consciousness so essential to the flow of the play.
You can tell that these performances were something to behold onstage. But it is harder to realize in this format. It is a missed opportunity in my book. I hoped for more.

Obsessed after seeing a repertory company do this play
I’ve been researching the plays(s) ever since seeing them a couple weeks ago at Repertory Theatre of St. Louis. Even though the actors are different — and I have trouble separating Nathan Lane the comedic actor from the Roy Cohn character — I really appreciated and enjoyed this performance by the recent Broadway revival cast.

Almost as wonderful as seeing it on stage!
I went to see the NT Live showing of this at the cinema and it was fantastic, utterly breathtaking and moving. It’s brilliant that they have done this recording - I wish they’d release the NT Live show on DVD too. The performances are just as moving and funny as they are on stage and the play itself, if you don’t know it, is truly brilliant. I can’t say anything without spoiling it but I think everyone on earth should be forced to sit down and listen to this. It’s incredibly deep and insightful and beautiful.

Wonderful cast of a wonderful play
Wonderful audio version of Angels in America read by the National Theatre on Broadway cast which had slight differences from the London one, but the fabulous Andrew Garfield, Nathan Lane, Denise Gough and James McArdle are all here with Lee Pace as Joe Pitt. The scene directions are read by Bobby Cannavale and Edie Falco and the musical interludes are also included so perhaps less of an audio book and more of an audio play (bringing back happy memories of being lucky enough to see this production in London). The cast really bring the play to life and the comedy really comes through I found myself laughing several times. The dithering of Lewis very much comes to life and the fierceness of Belize makes you wish you had a friend like that. It is a wonderful play but I do wonder if the poignancy translates as well in the audio version, I plan to read it too so watch this space!
