Story
We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

A series of death-defying short stories
- By Sailfish on 04-29-20
Publisher's Summary
What they have lost, we must find.
The resistance has nearly been wiped out, its numbers reduced to a scant fraction of what they once were. Meyer has fallen. With hope nearly a memory, something must turn the tide of war.
A deadly weapon, known only as Thor's Hammer, brings promise of salvation. Now the scattered remnants of the human race must find the device and recover it before the aliens can discover its location. Because if the rampaging Astral forces beat them to the weapon, the fate of Earth will be sealed.
This relentless, pause-resisting tale of colonization and alien empire is the fourth in the Alien Invasion series by masters of story Truant and Platt, authors of The Beam, Robot Proletariat, the Dream Engine series, and many more.
Fight for hope. Search for survival.

Done with this series
If I had a dime for every time the story repeated itself in this book, I could take some meaningful time off. This book in the series actually repeated the same scene constantly. The story is being drug out, and not much of any story was told in this book.
I loved the first book, second was still interesting, but I literally cannot tolerate this series anymore, because it is like going in a circle with the occasional change here and there. I'm done.

I won't be finishing this series
I have listened straight through up to the end of this book and I'm thinking I am no longer interested in this series.
My reason is that the storyline is convoluted, meanders and I find it difficult to stay focused while listening. The differentiation of the characters is getting very muddled. Although the descriptive language used for various characters, their emotions and motivations are good, they don't connect me with the characters and situations any longer.
I have listened on and on hoping to see some crescendo to a compelling momentum that would make we want to find out what will happen next, but the pace and storyline itself is so shallow, I find that the "payoff" at the end of each book now seems purely self serving in order to hopefully, (with little care form me now), to want to listen to the next book.
I am very selective about which readers I will listen to and Kevin Pierce is one that I like a lot, but I feel he is just not the right reader for this work. Mr. Pierce's style is like a the words of a small child when he says, "Grandpa, tell me a story?" He's great for certain types of material, but not this one. Sorry Mr. Pierce. I know you are doing your best and I don't feel it's really your fault.
One reason I started listening to this series was Ray Porter, who I always throughly enjoy listening to. He was such a perfect fit for these books that it overcame many of the short fallings for me with these works, but towards the end of the book before this one, I could see the effectiveness of this series to hold my attention was waining. Then with the switch in readers, I could see this was not going to go well. As with all acting, even the best performance does not make up for a poor script.
Maybe others of you see this series differently, but I am done with this series.

Narrator, Narrator, Narrator
Where does Annihilation rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
I am going to rate it in the series. I fell in love with the story and the PRIOR narrator, Ray Porter after listening for a very short time. Ray Porter made the first 3 books come alive. The ability to sit back and listen and just let the story float into your mind was wonderful. THEN book 4 and Kevin Pierce became the narrator...
What was one of the most memorable moments of Annihilation?
The most Un-memorable was Kevin Pierce as the Narrator. Unlike the prior narrator of books 1-3 of this series, you cannot let this story flow into your mind, you have to focus, pay attation and sometimes back up the story because you missed something due to how it is being read. I lost a lot of the story because of Keving Pierce.
How could the performance have been better?
Continued to use Ray Porter. Unless something happened behined closed door that we the listener is unaware of, a great narrator should not be changed in the middle of a series.
Any additional comments?
After listening to the first book and falling in love with the narrator Ray Porter, I used my credits to buy all of the books in the series. BAD MISTAKE.

Hate narrator. No character distinctions.
Narrator's voice made completing story more difficult than if reading it myself. Once you know a narrator works, be consistent. What was his appeal other than he can read, really. Like videos this.medium is IMPORTANT. Realize this now before it's too late.

Why oh why would you change the narrator!!!?
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
The book itself is ok, continuing on the story that I have found quite good, so on that basis I would recommend giving it a go. However, the narrator is really not that good, well compared to Ray Porter anyway and he made the previous books come alive. This us why overall, personally I would not recommend it. The whole series has been spoiled with a change of narrator mid way. What were you thinking!!!?
If you’ve listened to books by Sean Platt and Johnny B. Truant before, how does this one compare?
The storyline is good, its just as detailed and imaginative as the others
How could the performance have been better?
Be more consistent with the voices you put on and be more varied. They all sound the same!
Do you think Annihilation needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
It has one.
Any additional comments?
I will not be finishing this series simply because I have lost interest with the change of narrator. Shame because its a good story!

Awful narrator.
Where does Annihilation rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
Such a brilliant series that has been ruined by this different narrator. The narrator is useless at changing voice techniques for the different characters, making everyone sound the same. Confusing the story, and making what would have been an exciting story boring and non eventual. Such a shame. I have the next books in this series, but they are also read by this boring narrator. I honestly don't think I can tolerate him, I might have to actual read the books instead.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Annihilation?
Bad, boring tedious narrator.
What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?
Narrator can't read expression in the different characters, therefore it's very hard to differentiate who is who so he fails to engage his audience.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Nothing, due to poor narration.
Any additional comments?
Get the original narrator Ray Porter BACK ASAP. Or get R C Bray or Scot Brick.

Different naratror
Changeinng from a good narrator to an ok one at the fourth book in a series ruins it. You can't tell what group is which because there's no effort made to distinguish the characters.
Nothing much happens in the story either, which is equally irritating after sitting through this performance. Honestly Id have skipped this book if I knew what I did going in and simply Googled which characters died.
Filler with a poor choice of narrator.

Worthwhile continuation
A good story marred by the change of Narrator ... Unfortunately Keving Peirce does little to capture the characters personality and does very little in voice changes making it difficult to differentiate said character from each other.
I was dissapointed.
made it through only because I intend to complete the series.

No need to read book 2, 3 or 4
Read book 1, then skip books 2,3 and 4 as they don't progress the story. Assuming/Hoping that book 5 is the last book in the series, go straight there.

changing the narrator midway through a series...
...totally screws with your senses. Kevin Pierce did a good enough job. I would have been happy if he did it start to finish but to go from one to the other totally skews the characters.
it's a shame as this looks like it's as far as i can go with this series. WHY, WHY DID YOU DO IT?
I would suggest signing up narrators contractually for the series instead of bouncing around.
