Publisher's Summary

Sweet evil, come deliver us.

Gabriel has spent the last decade trying to forget his best friend, the first boy he ever loved: Jacob. Ripped away from each other in the midst of a family tragedy, Gabriel grieved for Jacob alone, surviving in their small religious town before finally breaking free to attend college, where they found new friends and relationships to pursue. To Gabriel, Jacob became a distant memory.

Until one fateful Halloween night, when the two are reunited, and Gabriel couldn’t be happier. Now, as adults, they can find the comfort and love that they desired in their adolescence. However, it doesn’t take long for Gabriel to realize that time apart has changed Jacob. The once confident and assured boy has grown into an isolated and obsessive adult. And the more Gabriel discovers about the man he loves, the clearer the danger becomes.

When Jacob reveals to Gabriel his life’s work - his studies into the occult, demonic practices, and his ultimate desire to summon and communicate with Paimon, a King of Hell - Gabriel finds himself dragged into a world that they never asked to be a part of. But the further Gabriel goes, the more they realize that the demonic king is not the true threat and that evil has been beside them all along....

A twisted, supernatural thriller from the acclaimed and best-selling writer Mason Deaver about a love darkened by trauma and turned wicked by obsession.

Horror Takes a Backseat to Exposition

We can say how nice it is that this audiobook is very LGBT forward and presents trans individuals in a positive light (not something common in media, especially horror media) but the story is only 3 hours long and the only intrinsic horror is in the last 35 minutes. Where in it take 4 minutes for the horror to happen, and then we have 31 minutes of lamenting, more exposition, more flowery language about revenge, and then ultimately... the end. I feel like there is a lot cut from this story for time, because certain plot points come out of nowhere and it's very obvious where we go from exposition to 'okay now the story is kicking off'. The characters are very 2 dimensional and it's hard to feel for any of them when we don't get to know any of them really. I can appreciate seeing representation, but it needs to be done right. Don't just make a character gay for the sake of making them gay and then have their queerness be their entire personality. The one motivation in this book is demon summoning but I don't even feel like the character who wants that actually wants that it feels like it's something they were told to do and then 'boom they do it cause so and so said'.

I'd kick this story out of bed for eating crackers in a heartbeat. This is a great example of why drafting and having more than just your friends read your stuff is important.

I'm all about a short horror story...

But honestly that's all that this was. Short. Do I love that this is an LGBT+ forward story? Hell yes! But did I expect more? Absolutely! This felt like the opening credits to a 90s witch tv show... I finished the whole thing because it was short but thoroughly was unimpressed.

Ugh....

I'm sorry, I enjoyed absolutely nothing about this. The story was extremely corny and the narration was bad.

Ummm…

What a letdown. I read the plot and knew it could go either way. Unfortunately, the way it went was awful. The narration was among the worst I’ve ever listened to. If I’m being honest, a 1 star is being generous.

What a waste

If it wasn’t free I’d ask for a credit refund. Poor story with no character development. Save your time.

Misled it was next in series

Audible indicated it was the next in series for planet Homicide. It was not for me.

Not worth the time.

"After reading the plot, I was excited and intrigued. The plot has a great concept however the story itself is very poorly written with unbelievable characters. Weak minded characters, dragged out story, perfunctory romantic relationships, and a confusing and rushed anticlimactic ending. 1 star is way too generous. I can only imagine anyone enjoying this due to the LGBTQ forward agenda, which is incredibly overwhelming as LITERALLY every character is at the very least homosexual, including the "demon". "

I'll never get that time back

Bad story and worse performance. I finished because I thought it had to get better. It did not, believe me.

we don't need LGTB characters just to be trendy

the narrator is the worst I've ever heard. suck on a damn cough drop! this story was so boring & while I support LGBT representation, this was gay just to be gay. more depth to the characters would've been nice.

Not for me

I love all things creepy and spooky but this one just didn't tick the right boxes.
There were elements I enjoyed and while I thought the main character had some strong internal conflict the rest just fell a bit flat. Might be fun to check out if you are looking for horror that is inclusive of the LGBTQA community but for me it was lacklustre. Just because a story is inclusive doesn't make it good. The story also falls a bit short in the ending without much really being resolved.
