For decades we've been told that positive thinking is the key to a happy, rich life. "F*ck positivity," Mark Manson says. "Let's be honest, shit is f*cked, and we have to live with it." In his wildly popular Internet blog, Manson doesn't sugarcoat or equivocate. He tells it like it is - a dose of raw, refreshing, honest truth that is sorely lacking today. The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck is his antidote to the coddling, let's-all-feel-good mind-set that has infected modern society and spoiled a generation, rewarding them with gold medals just for showing up.

Up to 40% of people consider themselves shy. You might say you're introverted or awkward, or that you're fine around friends but just can't speak up in a meeting or at a party. Maybe you're usually confident but have recently moved or started a new job, only to feel isolated and unsure. If you get nervous in social situations - meeting your partner's friends, public speaking, standing awkwardly in the elevator with your boss - you've probably been told, "Just be yourself!" But that's easier said than done - especially if you're prone to social anxiety.

Publisher's Summary
Use developments in neuroscience to rewire your brain and free yourself from the chains of anxiety, shyness, and panic attacks.
If anxiety dictates the way you live your life and you are ready to make a change and take charge of your life, this book will help you overcome anxiety.
Fear and the amygdala have been studied since the 1800s, with scientists making a connection between the two. Both the brain and fear are complex, and the studies continue today. It turns out the finding in the 1800s was true, and the amygdala does play a significant role in emotion known as fear. To complicate matters even more, fear is a state, and you can feel it to different degrees. These range from mild worry, anxiety, fear, and panic. However, not all of these are related to the amygdala, the first two, worry and anxiety are actually linked to the prefrontal cortex. This is a fairly new finding, but something that has been studied by neuroscientists ever since its discovery.
Fear is an intense emotion that can take many different forms, including both anxiety and panic disorders. Even though they can both be debilitating, it is possible to use the brain's own fear response to rewire it. This is possible because over time the brain has been conditioned to react a certain way to both real and perceived threats. So, just as it learned to this the first time, it can learn to do it again, in a way that is not harmful. Fear takes two different paths in the brain, with different techniques that correspond with the two. So it is important to be knowledgeable about different brain functions and how to improve and develop them. This the key to releasing the grip fear has on you and your brain.

Short, helpful text; unconcerned narration
The concepts in this short book felt sound and reasonable. Overall it is practical advice which I feel I could probably follow and use in real life. The book also goes into some concise details about physiology which was interesting and useful. I found that helpful not only in understanding the reasoning behind anxious behavior, but in being able to objectively identify what is happening.
I'd like to contrast the narration of this title - which was not narrated by the author - to another title on anxiety, "Unwinding Anxiety" by Judson Brewer. Brewer narrates his own title, Holloway does not, and the narration for Holloway's title was much less human. The narration of Holloway's was done by a professional narrator and while it was read, pronounced, and annunciated perfectly, it was easy to tune out while listening due to the unusual intonation, emphasis on unexpected words in a phrase, and an overall lack of human expression. There are moments the narrator did use some emotion in phrasing but in general the reading was stale in comparison to Brewer's. Only during Brewer's reading did I feel like the narrator was actually thinking the words he was speaking.
I'd recommend this for anyone who wants a quick listen about recognizing the physical characteristics of anxiety and practical advice on how to handle it. The narration may not be something every listener notices. For me, I have difficultly with focusing, so if I hear monotone phrasing or if I'm unconvinced that the narrator actually means what they are saying then I find it more difficult to continue listening.
