Publisher's Summary

The apocalypse began on Bring Your Dog to Work Day.

One moment, everything was normal. Then the World Core woke up, and slaughtered almost everything alive so it could harvest their Chi.

After that, it rebuilt everything and put the survivors in a game-like environment, pitting them against monsters and each other.

The rules are different now. Chi power is as important as being able to fight.

I'm one of the survivors. With my knowledge of martial arts and my special Chi skill, I'm turning myself into a force to be reckoned with.

This is a Western cultivation fantasy adventure. It includes a definite sense of progression, an MC who isn't an idiot, and Gamelit/LitRPG elements.

Lighthearted fun fantasy adventure story

Apocalypse Core is a very fun story.

The male narrator is new to me, but he did a wonderful job. Melanie Hastings once again delivers her terrific kittenish voice and imbues each of her characters with a distinctive voice.

While the story does have LitRPG/stats, it also doesn’t take itself too seriously. I loved it when a voice intoned “-7 damage, -7 damage, -5 damage” and the MC shouts “I don’t need a blow-by-blow account”! The entity “helping” guide the MC through the altered world is snarky and openly hopes our hero will die on multiple occasions!

The characters are interesting and fun, with distinct personalities, and the women have initial conflicts with the concept of sharing the MC.

A fun story with terrific narration; 5* and I look forward to book #2 in the series!

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review. Receiving a review copy did not influence my rating or my review.

A Unique Cultivation Story Worth Your Time

I had been thinking about how to describe this story and this is what I came up with. Take one part ego from Guardians of the Galaxy, on part snap from Infinity War, and then add cultivation with a video game element and you get a unique story set in a post-apocalyptic world complete with mutants in a game of life and death musical chairs. The writing was top notch, and the narration team did a fantastic job helping to bring the characters to life. I enjoyed the story and I recommend it to anybody reading this review. Well done to the team that helped bring this story to us the audible listeners and I can't wait to see what comes next.

A bit underwhelming but has a lot of promise

I do think this series has promise, and I’ll be waiting for the next books.

The start is quite good, and was very fun and entertaining, giving a nice look into the character before the events. Plus the dog was epic. The ML, Mark, acts a bit too much like a good guy and doesn’t seem to take things very seriously, and it comes to bite him in the ass. Trin just seems to be there and does not really do anything except for interacting with the ML until later on in the book when she starts do interact more with the characters. Ripper seems to be fun and I want to see more of her in the following book. Blue looks to be a more mischievous character, but as with Ripper we don’t get much of her either. The dog while very entertaining at the start now seems to just tag along and not do much at all.

The premise of the story was a decent twist on the genre, while not overly unique it has interesting moments. With a bit of trimming it would have been quite good, there is just to much excessive first person narration on the part of Mark, making it all feel boring. When there is actual dialogue it seems to bloom and flow better, especially during the interactions between Mark and Harbinger. The last third of the book is where it gets really good and interesting, and makes it worth reading.

One good thing is that there is a moment where they actually get into the aspects of their relationship and there's even some arguing that gets solved eventually. A good aspect and hope to see more things like these and development of the emotional aspects of what they have going on combined with more intimate moments. If they do this and put less focus on the combat, which drags a lot, it can be elevated even more.

Narration was good, Mark’s voice feels a bit flat and emotionless sometimes, but that of the other male characters is very good. The female voices felt ok, but it doesn’t get much chance to shine since she (the narrator) has very few lines.

In the end, it’s worth a read and it has potential for the future. While the mid of the book was a bit boring and dull, the start and the last third of the book are where it shines. Looking forward for more.

A Solid Entry

This was a strong first book. System apoc with humans changing into half monsters and a chi foundation. Definitely going to have more than one interest but it's a nice crunchy litrpg read as well.

Dial narration was on point as always. I'll be picking up the next one for sure.

Amazing book

My favorite things, apocalypse and monster girls.
This is a great book! Humphrey is freaking hilarious. Harbinger is a condescending douch but in a funny way. From the start I was hooked. Great fight scenes murdering monsters and some sexy shenanigans.

What kind of bs is chapter 26 and 27?

You can get stabbed in the heart and survive with no problem if you’re hp is high enough, yet the mc gets hit in the head and gets knocked out? What the actual f**k?

why did I wait so long

very cool take on the apocalypse/cultivation genre. I really enjoyed listening to it. the stats aren't too overbearing and the mc is likable. both the narrators were great. I especially loved the male mcs Canadian pronunciation of certain words. on to book 2 and 3 is around the corner!.

not bad.. but..

I struggle to know how to rate this story. On one hand it's great, on the other hand I do have my complaints. Typical backstory, the world finally wakes up, chi is real, 99%of the earths population dies. however there isn't a "system" in place like in other books or game windows to navigate their way around. Instead their is a guide, a living being from somewhere in the galaxy and its his very job to explain things and this guides consciousness resides in everyone independently. what is typical is he is very much the snarky rude hopes you die sort. but hes the one who reveals stats, etc. This guy can't even affect anything it's the world core that is doing all the stuff He is simply a guide of sorts and explains that that's what he does and always will do. Honestly I find him be annoying just as much as the MC does. ..
.
The male Narrator does a fantastic job no complaints there. The female narrator while she is very good at her job her voices are too.... fake? If this was a Disney film her voice would be right at home. But I suppose that's a personal opinion.
.
My last real complaint is that the game mechanics of this world are just bogus. It's more akin to an actual computer game Where your avatar performs just as good at 1HP as they do at full. There's no critical strikes or blows The best you can hope for is lingering damage per second. stick a dagger thru someone's eye and into their brain? just minus 4 hp if the dagger has a damage of 4. It's only the beginning of the story and people are already at or nearly at regaining one hit point per second. and it doesn't matter if your fighting or not.
.
The only reason the story flows as well as it does considering all this It's because the story is written with all that in mind. even the mc makes comments about how a debilitating blow is merely -10 hit points and you just keep on fighting.
.
And let's not forget the sex scenes. There's 3 I believe and written in detail.
.
In conclusion I think the book is pretty decent all in all I am however not sure it's worth The cost of audible credits.

Only the beginning.

The narrators did a pretty solid job. I wasn’t super wowed but it was a fun book.

Will be starting the next here soon.

Another Hit from Mr Porter

I picked up this book as a new release from an Author who I have enjoyed many other books from. Cultivation isn't something I normally read or understand well but it isn't so much of a focus to confuse or detract from the storytelling. I liked the cast of characters especially the MC's Dog as well as choice of non-standard races of the love interests. Narration was well done.
PS. Got so into the story I picked up Book 2 to read right after and it more than carries the torch to new heights.

A refreshing story

This was a spur of the moment books. I liked the cover. I know, but sometimes I get lucky. This was one of those times. The story held my interest and kept it going till the end.
The two narrators are new to me and I must say they did a great job of the book. I have to keep an eye out for their work in the future.
Now I have to wait for the next book, if it happens?
