Sixteen-year-old Augum Stone is a warlock prodigy suffocating under the weight of expectations. Students idolize him. Nobles plot to exploit him. Commoners think he's a miracle-maker. And with invasion looming, his already war-weakened kingdom expects him to be its champion. But Augum doesn't want to be a pawn in someone else's game. The ancient magic of wizards was anything but dark. It was the enlightenment that lifted humanity from the squalor of superstition, and the worship of fell spirits and capricious gods, but those days are gone. The shining glory of the sorcerers burned away the subtlety of wisdom, replacing it with easy power, held only in the hands of the elite - a new age built upon the elemental supremacy of aristocrats and the ignorance of the masses.

I liked this book.
This is a good book suitable for all ages. The target audience is really for younger audiences, though I'm in my fifties and I enjoyed it. I think that fans of Harry Potter will really like it. It's a little cookie cutter, but still good. The narration was great. I recommend this for young people and those that are young at heart.

Excellent story
I began reading the second series on Audible without knowing this one existed. I contacted the author to find out if his second book of the second series would soon be on audible. He immediately emailed me back and told me of the first series.
It takes nothing away from this series having read the first book of the other series.
If you are a fan of the Harry Potter series you will like these books. These are not so childlike that an adult cannot enjoy them.. I am 57 and enjoy the series very much. There is so much that will happen by the time you get to the second series and you won’t want to put the books down.
The negative reviews I have read here have no merit. People grasping at straws to be negative as they do hiding. Behind a keyboard. They really have no merit.
There is action and danger around every corner but it isn’t a disgusting or scary read.
I am most impressed that this young author Sever Bronny could produce such high quality reading right out of the gate. I am very impressed.
Enjoy.

So, so book, good voice acting
Any additional comments?
The book has a consistent flaw throughout...time. Everything happens quickly...the character shift emotions and concerns at light speed, people...large groups of people, traveling by cart what is impressed as large distances....at some point you just can't ignore these flaws. Thinking back, I think the entire book takes place is less than a week...yet the newbie apprentices are fixing walls, finding lost tunnels with spells. Add to this, that everything is easily fixed with magic...that doesn't seem to have any limits, rules..etc. The only redeeming quality to the book is Stefan Rudnicki. I would recommend holding onto your credits for another book.

Great parental kinda to why....
killing everyone often really doesn't do any thing, especially when every one is, well..... worth less then a sack of beans... yet we spent so much time on them. Oh the whole good and evil being as black and white just wasn't black or white. Grandma really seemed like a bad guy that you were trying to make good by... actually having morals; yet her Values where clearly not...

arcane, twists, growing plot and characters
For some reason my listening choices change so what regularly. from one genre's to another though I seem to have become somewhat engaged with these fantasy works by various authors. thankfully this is one of the better one's for me personally the story while not particularly fast paced does enough to keep you engaged.
ill probably listen to the rest of the series over the coming weeks.

An enjoyable listen when you’ve got fed up of battle after boring battle.
A bit of a harsh scene in the beginning but turns into a good story. I’ve been listening to a lot of fantasy which even though they are great stories get tied up in one battle after another, one great power which always comes up against another to the point that I start to turn off when yet another impossible victory occurs blah blah. This book may go that way in future books but I just enjoyed the story and will get the next book. As a read/listen it’s good but wouldn’t want to watch it as a movie. Worth it as it’s a freebie !

It's book for young teenagers.
It should be described as book for children not in general fantasy category.
12 - 15 years old character's conversation way to sophisticated and cheesy. Magic learned in hours ( boring easy) . It's very light and quite overrated story. I wouldn't recommend to my kids, there are much better written books eaven for young teens.
All said story do have potential, just written in such dull way.

Good narration, weak narrative
I honestly hate bashing on a children's book but here we go.
I am not one of the people who thinks that every single trope should be subverted but hitting every cliche in the book is kind of tiring. The story is chaotic, jumping from one status quo to the next without any rhyme or reason. Just when you think you know what the book is about something facepalm-worthy happens and the story tries to figure out again how it should proceed. Seriously we go from the call to adventure to the crossing the threshold stages five times in this book.
And the weird part is that the MC doesn't have anything to do with it. He doesn't really have an initiative on his own and the driving force behind his actions are usually what he was told to do or the things that happen to him. The reasons we are supposed to like him are not that great either - he is an orphan, he was bullied and he is not a sadist. That last one is apparently really rare in this world for some reason, because there are like 3 characters in the book that are not and one that pretends not to be but clearly is.
The world is a weird mix of a happy-go-lucky children's fantasy and grimdark. At one point a 12 year old girl was about to be raped in this children's book. But a moment later we are once again gushing over "arcanery" and doing household chores with magic. If I had to guess the author wanted to skip over the important first part of a fantasy series where characters are established and the world is set up and to jump straight into the middle of the series where the big important revelations happen and the stakes are raised. The problem is that it is not earned.
I honestly do not think a child will mind that book as much as I do because that is how children work - they rush ahead, skipping over details. A like the main character - good children do what they are told. But great child characters grow gradually and even in their earliest adventures have that streak of rebellion and that initiative that drives them forward.
On the other hand the narration is great - it was kind of baffling at first that a man with such a deep voice does female characters especially children but he manages it. Kudos for that!
