Publisher's Summary
Log-in or die.
Those are the only choices left for Clay Hopewell. Infected with the ZERO virus, he has less than 24 hours before he bites the dust. With no cure available, there's only one option left: digitally reincarnate himself in the most advanced virtual reality game ever, the mysterious and newly released Arcane Kingdom Online.
But cheating death and gaining immortality isn't that easy. If Clay survives the risky cognitive upload process, he'll still have to contend with a fantasy world teetering on the brink of crisis. Worse, a quarter of the in-game population hates his starting race, he can't unlock the mage class he wants, and a malevolent glitch threatens to upend the very existence of his new reality.
If Clay doesn't learn the rules of his new surroundings quickly, his second chance at life will be a lot worse than his first.

eh...
The beginning plot is something i have seen in atleast 4 other lit's so nothing new there.
I thought I would enjoy it anyways but the plot armor is way to strong in this one, the moment he is about to die his companion kills a mob the very last moment and he levels up to full hp this happened several times.
then he blushes like a 12 year old seing something naked for the first time when talks to friend despite his personality beign nothing close to it so it just dosnt make sense that he blushes while the bookworm dosnt..

I only got to chapter 9
this book didn't pull me in and by chapter 9 I lost interest.
The game world mechanics in the "the most advanced virtual reality game ever" are just bad, one example being where stabbing someone in the head twice with a sword and brain matter coming out while not dying just being odd.

good story, bad story teller
liked the story, a bit short, but okay.
The narrator pronouncing H.U.D, instead of hud, every chapter killed it, along with using the little used pronunciation of fungi as fuhn-jahy instead of common fuhng-gahy was jarring. reading ATK P, instead of attack power, or M ATK P instead of magic attack power, just like having daggers shoved in my ears, every time the MC got a piece of gear

Bad Production, Ok book, Ends well
I don't know who the producer was but they have no idea how gamers actually say terms. HUD is said as Hud. not H U D. ATKP is said Attack Power not as its acronym. It is like nails on a chalk board when the narrator says these things because it just sounds so dumb. The Narrator did a good performance but who was producing it really messed up and probably never played an online MRPG in their lives and it shows.
The book is self is just OK, not horrible but not overly interesting. The end was cool though and so the second book seems like it could get a lot better now that the MC is integrated into their world and the beginnings of the mystery has been revealed and there seems to be an end goal. I will be giving the second book a chance.

Not bad, but far from great...
I don’t write a lot of reviews, but by the end of the book I was sighing out loud every time the narrator said “H-U-D” instead of “hud”. The story wasn’t bad, but there are many other LitRPG stories that are better at drawing the reader into the plot. I also felt that the dungeon dive was way too short, couple rooms and done...might be why the book was a little short. On the positive side, I did like the character progression and magic system.

Unlikely to get the next book
Too much inexplicable success for the MC makes it hard to suspend disbelief. The tactics used by the MC would immediately be caught on to by the community and would make the game trivially easy. This would be fixed extremely early in development. Since this game has been around for years, all such exploits would have been fixed. In addition levels seem to be largely irrelevant. Level 1 vs 5 or 10 vs 30? Not even really a challenge.
On the positive side. The quality of the actual writing is solid. You don't really see too much unexplained standing around in combat while one or two characters fight. In addition some of the concepts introduced in book one are interesting and unique (I have not seen similar in other LitRPGs.)
Overall the book isn't bad, it just didn't hold my interest as I was constantly distracted by how easy things are for the MC. If the MC is going to succeed in a seemingly unwinnable scenario, there needs to be a really solid reason for it. In this book most conflicts should be unwinnable, and the MC just kind of wins for no particular reason.

I hate the narrator. He's an idiot.
I really wish authors would stop using this idiot. The main character has a HUD, yes it's an acronym but it's commonly pronounced hud. This mf'ing idiot keeps spelling it out every time. My H U D this, my H U D that. It's annoying and shows that the narrator knows nothing about the material. I've seen this moron ruin several good series with this idiocy.

A great book
I have not read any of Jakob’s books before, so this is an honest first-time reader review.
This is a great start to a series. You can relate to the main character, Clay and there is a familiar end of the world storyline that gently pulls you through a world which includes horrors and wonders.
Clay uploads his consciousness to an MMO when he becomes infected with a deadly plague in the real world. Unfortunately, it is not all sunshine and lollypops in the game either. He is thrown into an area that is not a starting area and is in way over his head and he struggles to survive. He teams up with an NPC thief, a human girl he knew from the real world and a few other strange characters.
I liked the detail put into the levelling experience for the new players as it gave them a fighting chance of surviving.
A classic LitRPG which flows nicely and a great start to a series.

A bit of a slow start but awesome start to a great series
The premise is interesting and though it is a slow start it is a good start to what I think will be a great series. The narrator has a great voice and is easy to listen to. Well worth a listen for fans of lit-rpg.
