Publisher's Summary

A novel inspired by number one New York Times best-selling author Mark Greaney’s Audible Original drama, Armored.

Joshua Duffy is a Close Protection Agent—a professional bodyguard— and he's one of the world's elite operatives. That is, he was until his last mission in Lebanon. Against all odds, Josh got his primary out alive, but the cost was high. Josh lost his lower left leg.

There's not much call for an elite bodyguard with such an injury. So, Josh has to support his family working as a mall cop in New Jersey. For a man like Josh, this is purgatory on earth, but miracles can occur even in Paramus.

A lucky run-in with an old comrade promises to get Josh back in the field for one last job. The UN is sending a peace mission into the Sierra Madre mountains in Mexico, an area so dangerous it's known as Espinazo del Diablo—the Devil's Spine. Only a fool would think they could broker peace between the homicidal drug cartels in the region, and only a madman would sign on to keep those fools alive.

I wasn’t going to write a review but…

… after seeing a couple of negative reviews I thought I would add my two cents. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I think it shows that Mark Greaney is a truly talented author. I love the Gray Man series but if you read/listen to this book you will see that it is much more realistic and believable. Although I wouldn’t give up the Gray Man no matter how wild he gets!
Adam Gold is one of my favorite narrators. His performance is stellar and I can appreciate why he was chosen for this book.
This book has my VERY HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION.
If you found this review helpful please indicate so.
Thank You.

Distracting Narration

First I want to say that Adam Gold is one of the absolute best in the business with male voices and dialog. Buy he can't narrate descriptive text very well and that's what the vast majority of the book is. He mostly tries to dramatically whisper. He doesn't have a natural delivery. It eventually gets to be too much to take and I found my mind wandering. Sadly I will not listen to more from this series if it's the same narrator.
If you want to enjoy this story I recommend the full cast version of Armored. It's a little different but at least you're not agonizing through many hours of mediocre reading.

Not up to Gray Man stories

It was OK, but not Gray Man quality. He definitely knows how to write an action packed book & character development is good,. I skipped the cartel based chapters without loss of the storyline. Maybe drug cartel stores just aren’t my cup of tea. I really like his writing, but was disappointed relative to Gray Man. I won’t be following this series.

I liked it more than I expected

Based on some of the reviews, I liked this much more than I expected. I think many people are just making a fuss because it's a new narrator for Greaney's books and a new character. I have returned plenty of books in the past because I couldn't get along with the narrator, but I thought Adam Gold did an excellent job. The last 4 hours were some of Greaney's best stuff. I hope we get more in this series.

Narration is over-dramatic...distracting!

I think I would have liked the story more if the narrtor wasn't so over-dramatic in the delivery ..so annoying. It's a shame because I am a huge Mark Greaney fan.

Narrator almost ruined this awesome story

The story was great the characters were great but it was hard to get through because how awful the narrator was. Every single word was spoken with so much dramatic inflection it was terrible.

Vet bro overload

The story was good, but the vet bro story telling was a little over the top. As a former AH-64 Apache pilot and retired CW4 with 4x combat tours, I took offense to the storyline of the WO being a coward and the ROTC VMI grad being the hooah person. This is so far from the majority it’s laughable. Again, I am a little biased (LOL). The Vet Bro storytelling was really my biggest issue. Could of been a great book, but the oratory job was weak. On another note, The Gray Man movie was horrible!

Mark Greany Strikes Again

I thought I wasn’t gonna like this book as well as all the Gray Man books but this was another excellent novel full of twists and turns and the narrator was good too really liked it. I hope there are sequels with this character and his wife in action too!

In-depth version of the last one.

There is no need to get the other armored Josh Duffy book if you bought this one. This version is pretty much the same but more in-depth, a richer and more thrilling ride.
