Publisher's Summary

Lucinda Beckwith Long, the mayor of Athena, has donated a set of Civil War-era diaries to the archives of Athena College. The mayor would like Charlie to preserve and to substantiate them as a part of the Long family legacy - something that could benefit her son Beck as he prepares to campaign for the state senate.

Beck's biggest rival is Jasper Singletary, and their families have been bitter enemies since the Civil War. He'd like to get a look at the diaries in an attempt to expose the Long family's past sins. Meanwhile, a history professor at the college is also determined to get her hands on the books in a last-ditch bid for tenure. Now Charlie is left with a catalog of questions. The diaries seem worth killing for, and one thing is certain: Charlie will need to be careful, because the more he reads, the closer he could be coming to his final chapter...

Library Donation is to DIE for

When Mayor Lucinda Beckwith Long makes a donation to the archives of University of Athena’s library, Charlie Harris is very excited to get a look at them . . . and so are some other folks, so much so that before Charlie can even catalog the four editions of the Civil War Diaries, they are knocking at his door asking to see them. The problem is some have political connections, pulling rank on the others, and before long, Charlie has a mess on his hands. Seemingly the diaries have an impact on the upcoming senatorial election, and tempers are running hot. The coveted volumes are stolen, a university professor is murdered and Charlie, once again gets involved in the investigation. Great addition to the series, with all the beloved characters, that I've come to know.

Another Mystery Satisfyingly Solved…

This was another excellent read in the “Cat in the Stacks” series. I’ve read all of the books in the series, but was so sad when I finished the last book in the series, I started all over again from book one!

Once again, Charlie and Diesel are minding their own business when murder somehow finds them and Charlie simply can’t stay out of it. There are some pretty important people putting a lot of pressure on Charlie…. In the meantime, Charlie also has to take care of Diesel, who is about to expire any second — from hunger! (I do wish I had a Diesel in my life, but I don’t think I could afford to feed him)!

I enjoyed this book from the first page to the last. I must say on Charlie’s behalf though, was completely frustrated by how often he was interrupted at work and at home by a revolving door of rude characters demanding this and that. I also wish there had been a bit more of Stuart in this book (he is one of my FAVORITE characters in this series, because he is, well…a real CHARACTER so to speak)!

Charlie is a very polite, old-fashioned Southern gentleman, bred with the good manners that are so lacking in our society today. However, Charlie is just too nice and too accommodating for his own good. I found myself wishing throughout the book that he would slam a door in someone’s face, yell at someone after they had been verbally rude to him, slammed the phone down on someone, or at the very least, give a firm “NO!” and walk away, muttering and swearing! At times, I find his unfailing politeness IRRITATING. Come on Charlie — your time is important too. Just think of all that extra time you’d have to read and spoil Diesel!

I sincerely hope the author of these books, Miranda James, is hard at work cranking out 8 or 10 more books for “The Cat in the Stacks” series. Every one of them is like a reunion with family and old friends.💕 I have no idea what I’ll read next when I’ve gone through the last book for the second time. The next book coming at the end of 2022, “Hiss of Death,” (I believe that’s the title), can’t come soon enough for me. I suppose until then, after I reach the end of this series, I will go back and read another favorite of mine, the Laurie Cass “Magical Cats” series from start to finish again.

It was interesting how Ms James tied all her facts together in a bow. I have never heard of that type of material. I guess it's no longer available! It was a good read!

Couldn't Get Into the Plot

I've listened to 1-5 in the series and have enjoyed the stories and characters. However, this one just didn't keep my interest. I haven't given up on the series though and I will begin listening to the next one today.
