Publisher's Summary

An ancient, alien technology that will change what it means to be human, a conspiracy begun before the first pyramid was built, and a world threatened by an unimaginable horror.

Deep in the Indian Ocean, Dr. Selene Khan enters an underwater dome thousands of years old, one that is fully operational. She barely escapes to the surface, only to discover that her research vessel has vanished. Can she make it to shore 100 miles away?

On the other side of the world, Agent Jack Elliot uncovers an impossible 900 grams of antimatter. The trail leads him to Egypt, betrayal, and a sinister brainwashing facility. There, in a desperate move, he rescues Dr. Selene Khan, fleeing with her into the desert.

Together, Selene and Jack race to unravel a global conspiracy and learn the truth about an ancient, alien artifact and how civilization really began. Two people must summon the courage and extraordinary ability to stop the world's oldest plan from plunging humanity onto a twisted, evolutionary path.

Artifact is a lightning-paced adventure, utterly unpredictable right up to its stunning conclusion.

Don't listen to the bad reviews!

I almost didn't buy this book because of all the negative reviews, but I'm glad I didn't listen to all those critics. Is this book a classic? No! Are there some errors in it? Yes. But it is one heck of a fun listen. The main characters defy all odds to defeat the evil "Mother" who is hell bent on destruction. They left this open for a sequel and I can't wait. It just goes to show that you have to make your own judgements and not put too much stock in the opinions of others.

An easy listen.

No miracles but nonetheless it was entertaining :-) I would definitely listen to a second chapter.

Massively disappointing!

This book may not be the worst audiobook I've ever listened to but it was pretty close. The characters were one-dimensional, there was no plot to speak of and the writing was somthing you might expect from a 14 year old kid who has read way too many Clive Cussler novels.
The narration is harder to critique, it bordered on creepy but that may be because of the idiotic dialog.
Don't waste your money or your time.

Juvenile writing

I suppose when you are used to great writers, character development, and solid plots, then you listen to a book that may have been a first book for a young uh very young (in experience), beginning writer, you notice it more readily.
This book in the hands of maybe Sanderson or Jordon, even Bray (and these are by no means the only ones that come to mind), may have been a good beginning to an exciting new series. But it isn’t. And if there is or may be a book 2, I can assure you I won’t read it.
The characters who you care nothing for well except a canine that is genetically enhanced, speak their lines to themselves at the most inane of times. It’s a predictable book from beginning to end.
Just save yourself the trouble and pass this one up unless you’re maybe 11 years old! I bought it with real money in one of the Audible sales, otherwise it would definitely be a return!

Conspiracy theory anyone?

I did not like this book. The performance was over the top with silly character voices and the story did not make sense. Also, thin characterisation, ridiculous plot points and so much conspiracy theory that I was about to stop listening. Plus a very unsatisfying conclusion.

So painful!

I wish I could give a full review but I only got through a couple of painful and boring chapters before I gave up! I've heard Luke Daniels narrate before, he's a bit flat vocally to my ear but not bad but if this had been the first book I ever heard of his I'd never listen to him again! He brought no life to the characters, his character voices were inconsistent and his inflections and pitch jumpy! The storyline itself had potential but there was no quality to the writing. I'm so happy Audible has such a great return policy because this loser is going back!

Stellar performance by Daniels couldn't save it

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

not if I particularly like them as I would not want them to waste the money or time

What do you think your next listen will be?

I really should move on to Oathbringer, but perhaps I will listen to Edgedancer first

What about Luke Daniels’s performance did you like?

I have heard him in two other series before this book and he really can bring even this book to life!

Do you think Artifact needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

maybe, though a prequel about these fallen angels would be better

Any additional comments?

The first 3rd of the book was like a tennis match with an new chapter and perspective every turn of the page, very frustrating.
Over the next 3rd I was wondering if I should make this my first ever refunded book.
Finally in the next 1/4 it started getting interesting, but probably not as intended by the writer, as I was rooting for the antagonists (their course sounded like it would make for an interesting book)
During the remaining 8% (you'll have to check my math as I am pounding shots-though whether in celebration of it being over or in commiseration for the 14+ hours I'll never get back) I was trying to picture if the authors were trying to set things up for a sequel.

Good if it were intended for a YA audience.

While there was some interesting tech and an interesting plot. The story needed more development. IMHO this had a chance to be an epic sci-fi thriller. While still an interesting listen it tetters on the edge of recommendabilty if that is even a word.
Luke Daniels saved the story with another great performance.

Ho Hum

This book had some promise but it fell short. With all of the unusual events taking place that the protagonists witnessed, it drove me nuts they were in such denial that there just might be other forces outside of what the world knew to be certain. The story was action packed but overall pretty dry.

Probably best for YAs

Story starts off well, quick paced and introducing potentially interesting puzzles but it soon devolved into a too-long exposition of pseudo-science and pseudo-philosophy that strains this reader's ability to suspend disbelief. The end is far too long and leaves much unanswered.

Really enjoyed this one, but...

I was a little let down by the ending. Definitely worth a listen though.

Well worth a listen

I’m a sucker for ancient alien type stories and loved this one. Great delivery, but like other reviews have said the ending could have been a little stronger. In fact I thought they were lining it up for a second book which I wound have bought in a heartbeat, but looks like it is standalone. Anyway if you like earth based sci fi / global conspiracy type stories then then this is well worth a credit.
