Story
A very wise physician has said that "every illness has two parts - what it is, and what the patient thinks about it." What the patient thinks about it is often more important and more troublesome than the real disease. What the patient thinks of life, what life means to him is also of great importance and may be the bar that shuts out all real health and happiness. The following pages are devoted to certain ideals of life which I would like to give to my patients, the long-time patients who have especially fallen to my lot.

Story
It is popularly supposed that a greater prosperity for individuals or nations can only come through a political and social reconstruction. This cannot be true apart from the practice of the moral virtues in the individuals that comprise a nation. Better laws and social conditions will always follow a higher realization of morality among the individuals of a community, but no legal enactment can give prosperity to, nay it cannot prevent the ruin of, a man or a nation that has become lax and decadent in the pursuit and practice of virtue.

Using his legendary ability to get to the root of human potential, Napoleon Hill digs deep to reveal how fear, procrastination, anger, and jealousy prevent us from realizing our personal goals. This long-suppressed parable, once considered too controversial to publish, was written by Hill in 1938 following the publication of his classic bestseller, Think and Grow Rich. Annotated and edited for a contemporary audience by Rich Dad, Poor Dad and Three Feet from Gold coauthor Sharon Lechter, this book is profound, powerful, resonant, and rich with insight.

Story
As we think, so we become. This fundamental truth, which some have called "The Secret" or the "Law of Attraction" was clearly and convincingly argued for the first time in James Allen's masterpiece, As a Man Thinketh. Allen reveals how our thoughts shape our character, and manifest themselves in our finances, health, appearance, and environment. The choice is yours: either master your thoughts and create the life you want or remain mired in negativity, frustration, and failure.

Clear and beautiful
Would you consider the audio edition of As a Man Thinketh to be better than the print version?
I love the comparison between mind and garden. How we grow has to do with what we choose to cultivate and what we choose to weed out. The message really resonated with me and had a strong immediate effect on my consciousness. We easily forget our own power and this is a good reminder, a small step back to get a clearer view. It's short and it is a pleasure so I'll probably listen to it again.
What does Brian Holsopple bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
I think his pacing is just right.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes, but I didn't seat, I went for a walk, that is why I use audiobooks.

Great timeless book and very good narration
What made the experience of listening to As a Man Thinketh the most enjoyable?
I like the narration. I listened to several excerpts and this is one of the best narrations for this book.
What other book might you compare As a Man Thinketh to, and why?
This book is about changing your character and have it reflect in your external circumstances. I find it more practical than some of the other 'law of attraction' books so I'll even compare it to a very practical self-help book like On Form by James E. Loehr and Tony Schwartz.
What does Brian Holsopple bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?
I liked the commanding voice of the narrator compared to many other audio books I've listened to.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes

Basic yet fundamental
Given this book was written in 1907, it has survived the test of time with a handful of other personal development books.
I'm an atheist and books with a religious lean lose my attention very quickly. This book reflects the attitudes of the time so it has a religious tilt in the language used, however I did not feel that I was listening to a sermon.
The basic message is keep your mind good and pure and serenity will follow. It does not define any of these so it can be interpreted using your own moral compass and therefore used by most. The only people who are unlikely to benefit from listening to this book are those with a moral compass that justifies things that you know deep down are wrong.

Classic Simplicity
A brilliant short book with brilliant ideas. Some Perhaps an over emphasis on the impact of personal effort on one's circumstances (there are many factors contributing to people's circumstances that cannot be controlled). Also, the gender biased language made me cringe! Understandable from the time it was written, but definitely outdated reference to 'man', etc. Otherwise wonderful.
