Yesterday I was a teenager waiting tables in Manhattan, and today, monsters exist and I can see them. Overnight I’m thrown into the realm of the Watchers, a society of earthbound angels split into two factions: the Shades, whose powerful dark magic is given to them by the fallen angels, and the Lumens, whose abilities are bestowed on them by the archangels of Avalon. They’re on opposite sides of a brutal war, and I only have a few days to pick which side I want to join. I’m ready to choose when the Shades force my hand by cursing someone I love.

Publisher's Summary
Are you an ash?
Increased stamina....
Lack of appetite....
Anger outbursts....
Insatiable thirst....
Beauty and strength....
Male....
Call the hotline if these symptoms come on suddenly!
Turns out Charlie Bennet was all of those things except the last. Don't let the name fool you, Charlie was all woman, and she wanted nothing to do with the ash...until the day she found out she was one.
It all started when infected bats bit a small group of humans and created what are now called vampires. Then, the male vampires knocked up some female humans, and the result was a gorgeous race of all male ash - superhuman freaks that had looks to kill.
Charlie is the first female ash, aka unicorn of the Hive - the gated compound in Portland that the humans have designated to isolate vampires and ash from society.
Problem? The Hive is full, and only a select few will be allowed to live there. To live at all, really. If Charlie wants to earn the right to become a citizen of the Hive, she will have to survive the culling - a series of fights to the death. And guess what? Just because she's a girl doesn't mean she'll get special treatment.
Good thing there's Ryder, the mysterious lead ash enforcer, who seems to always have her back. But when secrets bubble to the surface, it will take more than one guy to save her.

Not bad... If I was 16
This book wasn't for me. I love paranormal fantasy, however, I just cannot relate to a character who is 20 years old and talks like she is 15. I wish I had known that the main character was so young as this would have hinted at the age-group this book was intended for. Unfortunately, I just can't get on board with someone who talks like she texts and has survival instincts comparable to those of a drunk lemur.
The narrator was great, but unfortunately the story just wasn't for me.

JUST FINISHED THE FIRST... I NEED THE SECOND!!!!!!
Any additional comments?
I just finished the first book on my run at lunch today. I was so pissed when it ended. I knew that they haven't done the second book yet, but I was still angry. (In a great way though) Meaning this book was awesome!
The narrator was wonderful. She did a great job playing the main character "Charlie". I really loved every character. I want to be like charlie!
Leia and Jaymin did such a great job with this book. There was detail, character development, and action. If your looking for something that will keep you hooked, I HIGHLY recommend this book! I want MORE! Also, it made my runs so awesome. Girl power, kicking butt. Loved every minute of it.
Great job with this!

Compelling, exciting, and surprisingly brutal.
When I caught the flu and had to stay in bed all day, I spent my waking hours listening to ASH. Vampire hybrids who must fight to the death to survive. Sexy commando type love interests. Best Friends Forever. What's not to love? I will be waiting for the sequel.

I NEED THE OTHER BOOKS
I went to purchase the 2nd book in this series as soon as "the end" was said & got pissed off. It's not there. How can you put one book of this trilogy in audio version and not give me the rest? That is just cruel. This is a different take on vampire stories where vamps can have children that are called ASH [rather than half bloods] and they live in Hives with the Vamps. However, they only have male offspring and yet one female is born. The beginning has a Hunger Games type scenario in it. I just can't mention too much more because I don't want to give anything away.
I can't wait to learn more about the world that Charlie and Ryder live in. Even though I enjoyed the book, I was left wanting more as if it just cut off at the place I had been waiting for things to really take off. There was action but... My sheer frustration at that made me rate it a 4 on the story rather than a 5. I needed more NOW. The 8.5 hour book flew by so fast that I was shocked when it was over. I even checked twice to see if my phone had malfunctioned and skipped chapters. Sadly, not.
The characters are so well defined that I can see many, many books to come from this series. I know that the planned trilogy just isn't enough. I have too many questions about all the supporting characters They have drawn me in and I am hooked. Ryder's team needs to be fully explored as do Charlie's friends. Plus, I need to know the backstory about Charlie's Mom & Dad. I'm sure that her Dad has an exciting story to tell. The only way I can see full justice done to the supporting characters is for each book to be at least 20-30 hours long (if it is going to be a trilogy). Most of my interest was placed on the characters because I could actually see many as people that I may have known in my life. I laughed at their antics but was also worried about the outcome of their lives.
The author did too good of a job and has me hooked. That's not a good thing for my frustration level right now. Just call me frustrated and wanting more.

I think I would like these characters to mature a bit. For example she uses a lot of curse words but it's like someone that is trying to curse as opposed to someone that just does it everyday.

Good Read by an Author I have never read before
Who was your favorite character and why?
I enjoyed the development of Ryder. He didn't chase the main character. He stays professional as an enforcer. I like the fact he seems to have a good sense of ethics and morality.
What about Dara Rosenberg’s performance did you like?
Powerful performance by Dara Rosenberg. Her character voices were not brilliant but very acceptable.
Any additional comments?
The story had pace and gave a new view on how vampires came in to existence. In the recent past vaguely believable series of circumstances created Vampires and Ash. The story is full of strong characters. I don't like long drawn out battle scenes but the fights which allowed her to survive the culling where sufficiently detailed to show the brutality.
It was a very worthwhile read. I will definitely watch for the next book in the series.

Everything that happens in films & not real life
The narration was really good but I found myself rolling my eyes at the story far too often.
Every cliche around love is used. There are so many declarations of love and feelings in every way. It was a bit too much for me and crowded the story too much.
The story itself is really good and the twist near the end stopped me from turning it off but it was all found in the shadow of the overly Hollywood-esk love story. No relationship in history has ever been like that!
Not bad as background entertainment.

Pleasantly Surprised
Enjoyable and a good storyline, the language level isn't as good as I would have enjoyed especially considering the lead had almost finished College (University) ... My one annoyance is that no one told the narrator that her Scottish, Australian and English accents are in fact terrible variations of Cockney English... Grrrr

Nice idea ....
Nice idea but poorly executed. I think I’m the wrong age for this book because the dialogue grated on me. Pretty much everyone is described as hot so it was difficult to get a feel for who the characters were. They all blended into one. The narration was also a problem as all ladies sounded the same and all men sounded the same which made it hard to follow.

Need more readers
I really liked the story however there as only a single female reader which didnt bring the story to life as she read the narritive for the male characters. Plus the accents were not very good

Good story, ok pdrformance
the book seems pretty Ok, although I did zone out a few times. The narrative was great with voices but as she was telling the story I felt like I was listening to a first time performer. some excitement and human emotions would have made this book a lot better

would listen to again
great book, but have to agree with another comment on perhaps using some more advanced language, very 13 year old basic sometimes.

not too bad
writing is a bit immature for my liking but has good story line. hope the character arcs improve with next novel.

Thrilling action packed
The story is refreshing and suspenseful that grips you and makes you hold your breath and sigh at same time, it has a sexy witty and kick ass heroine and a hot dangerous and wickedly delicious a swoon worthy protagonist and the end is a jaw dropping twist and sets for a thrilling sequel. I love Dara Rosengerg she is magnificent narrator, she portrays all the characters uniquely. X
