Story
From her first moment at Merryweather High, Melinda Sordino knows she's an outcast. She busted an end-of-summer party by calling the cops, a major infraction in high-school society, so her old friends won't talk to her, and people she doesn't know glare at her. She retreats into her head, where the lies and hypocrisies of high school stand in stark relief to her own silence, making her all the more mute.

Story
Tawawa House in many respects is like any other American resort before the Civil War. Situated in Ohio, this idyllic retreat is particularly nice in the summer when the Southern humidity is too much to bear. The main building, with its luxurious finishes, is loftier than the white cottages that flank it, but the smaller structures are better positioned to catch any breeze that may come off the pond. And they provide more privacy, which best suits the needs of the Southern white men who vacation there every summer.

Story
From the celebrated author of The Secret Life of Bees, a magnificent novel about two unforgettable American women. Writing at the height of her narrative and imaginative gifts, Sue Monk Kidd presents a masterpiece of hope, daring, the quest for freedom, and the desire to have a voice in the world - and it is now the newest Oprah’s Book Club 2.0 selection. Hetty “Handful” Grimke, an urban slave in early nineteenth century Charleston, yearns for life beyond the suffocating walls that enclose her within the wealthy Grimke household. The Grimke’s daughter, Sarah, has known from an early age she is meant to do something large in the world, but she is hemmed in by the limits imposed on women.

Publisher's Summary
Return to the American Revolution in this blistering conclusion to the trilogy that began with the bestselling National Book Award Finalist Chains and continued with Forge, which The New York Times called "a return not only to the colonial era but to historical accuracy."
As the Revolutionary War rages on, Isabel and Curzon have narrowly escaped Valley Forge - but their relief is short-lived. Before long they are reported as runaways, and the awful Bellingham is determined to track them down. With purpose and faith, Isabel and Curzon march on, fiercely determined to find Isabel's little sister Ruth, who is enslaved in a Southern state - where bounty hunters are thick as flies.
Heroism and heartbreak pave their path, but Isabel and Curzon won't stop until they reach Ruth, and then freedom, in this grand finale to the acclaimed Seeds of America trilogy from Laurie Halse Anderson.

Excellent conclusion to the series!
So glad I finally got around to listening to this book. Forge was good, but suffered from middle book syndrome. All that is forgotten in my love of this conclusion. I love the historical accuracy of the book and Anderson's unflinching honesty about what life was like for enslaved and free blacks during the Revolution with both sides using their desire for freedom against them. Yet, she also shows why so many were willing to sacrifice for a country that wasn't offering them freedom, because they believed that they needed to fight to gain their freedom. It made me sad to read it with two hundred plus years of hindsight, realizing how long the struggle would continue for ever basic civil rights.
The story of Isabel, Corzon and Ruth was compelling as well. The characters we met in Chains are older and have gone through a lot, but it isn't hard to empathize with their struggle to find freedom and peace amidst the country's struggle for the same things.
A very satisfying conclusion!

A difficult topic (slavery during the Am. Rev)
What made the experience of listening to Ashes the most enjoyable?
For the third time, Ms. Anderson has scored. I was excited to read the last book in this trilogy, and I was not disappointed.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The end - but I can't say more without giving it away. Suffice it to say, this was a good ending to a good book (or really, set of three books).
Any additional comments?
If you are interested in the American Revolution or slavery, I strongly recommend all three of these books - Chains, Forges, and Ashes.

An amazing conclusion filled with heart, struggle, and triumph!
The story of this trilogy’s characters is one of the best in historical fiction. Not only do the characters seem fully realized, but they feel alive as well. As though once real people, their essence blazes brightly with their impactful insight into life. It is no surprise they are like this for Mrs. Anderson crafts an accurate depiction based on multiple sources. As such, it is a brilliantly woven tale. Despite the story in this conclusion being both heartfelt and powerful, the performance was lacking slightly.
It is only by the merit of the narrator that the performance garnered three stars from me. She reads it well, voicing all the characters with distinct tones and dialects. However, it is her voice that did not suite the piece. In the recording of the first novel, the narrator was perfectly cast — an older woman chose to narrate the story, as if reflecting back upon it. In this conclusion, the narrator is much younger with a lighter and less seasoned voice. Overall, a good performance from her — but a miscast nonetheless.
In a whole, this audiobook is of a high caliber. With such a shining story, it would be nearly impossible for it not to be. Though not perfect, it is still a great testimony of the strength and reward someone has when they conquer and overcome their struggles both inward and outward; and the peace they can feel by speaking their truth. This, in and of itself, is the hardest struggle of all. A pillar in historical fiction and children’s literature, this trilogy is well worth the addition to anyone’s library.
