Story & narration will draw you in...more please!
Assassins and Liars (J. R. Finn Sailing Mystery Series, Book 1) by Charles Dougherty and narrated by David Bosco is a quick, fun listen that will draw you in. I’d recommend for those who enjoy mysteries with sailing elements or are looking for a shorter listen.
What’s it about? The title does the book justice. While traveling for work on his boat Island Girl, Finn encounters Mary Beth. He lets her to tag along to his next location, but it’s not all sunshine and rainbows. Both have secrets they need to keep hidden. Both enjoy the sailing life. The two have more in common than they realize.
It contains a good amount of sailing terminology at times, but it shouldn’t be confusing even if you are newcomer (you have likely heard some of the terms before- mast, bow, tiller, mainsheet, halyard, sail ties, and so on). The writing and narration will pull you in. I listened to this in one sitting (didn’t even realize five hours had passed until the book ended).
David Bosco does an outstanding job with this one. I’d recommend listening to the audiobook as David’s narrations are brilliant and add to the story.
Overall, I recommend, while keeping in mind that this is book one of four so you will not find out everything quite yet. I cannot wait for the next audiobook and will be waiting patiently (perhaps a little impatiently).
Parental guidance/trigger warnings: some swearing (not excessive), murder/death, breaking of a male’s arm by female due to abuse (told as a story), relationships, and violence. Not saying anything else due to spoilers.

Clever mystery
Keeping secrets and only being able to tell people you care about half-truths is a theme that resonated with me. I really like mysteries like this that pull you in right away and keep you plugged in the whole time. This is one of those rare books where you really trust the author not to let you down, and that trust helps with a book to stick it out knowing that the payoffs are coming.
David Bosco is an awesome narrator and now that I know this book, I have already started the next one in the series.

Easy Listen, Great Mystery
This was such an exciting story that starts off with a punch and the excitement continues until the very end. I listened to it and one sitting. The story was perfectly descriptive and was so easy to follow! I find mysteries I can easy get confused but not with this one, the writing was spot on. This book was not what I was expecting, and I enjoyed it way more than I thought I would. I enjoyed the characters much more than I thought I would at the start of the book. Great start to what I think will be an amazing series. I intend to continue on in this series.
David Bosco does a great job with the narration. The distinct voices made the listening experience even more straight forward then it already was.

Assassins and liars are at the heart of it all and it is as advertised. I was driving when this book ended and I screamed "Nooooo!" I may have cursed a little too, not sure.
I loved, loved, loved the narration. Bosco gave us a tough-as-nails former military and a wayward twentysomething female. It was effortless.
The next book in the series is not yet available (yes, I checked) but I will be Johnny-on-the-spot when it does!

Great listen!
David Bosco does an amazing job of narrating as always.
This is a great series. I’ve waited until I’ve listened to the first 3 before reviewing.
In this book I find it difficult to understand why Finn continues to trust Mary. Of course things will make sense later but liars is very appropriate for the title.
Killers, assassins vigilantes, all kinds of espionage and mystery. It’s here for you to enjoy.
Great series and I’m ready for book 4.

Great Layered Mystery
For some reason, I do not typically like stories dealing with sailing. It may be that I’m not that familiar with sailing jargon or that on a sailboat there are only so many people, but the premise of the story made me curious. While there is quite a bit of sailing and jargon in this book, the mystery and the interaction between Finn and Mary kept my interest. Also, there is quite a bit of time spent off the boat on the various islands. I also learned a bit.
The story was good, though the dialog sometimes fell a bit flat for me. There were a lot of ‘said’ that at times seemed redundant. The narrator does a good job of not letting on too much. It is also a stand-alone story and the first of four in the series. It has an ending, but there is clearly more to learn in the following three books. I am eager to continue.
I was provided with a free copy of this audio book for my honest review. The views expressed here are entirely my own.

Some folks just need killing.
The Caribbean, and Finn has recently retired from his secret military job, but hasn't stopped working: he's about to head for his second contract fulfilment when a young woman asks for a temporary crew place on his boat, Island Girl. She's attractive, bare footed and seems to know her sailing stuff so he agrees , thinking she might help give him cover. But Mary has her own agenda, as Finn very quickly discovers.
I am not a sailing person, nor do I ever wish to become one, so I know nothing of the skills needed to 'drive a boat'. But this book gave a real feeling of being in the presence of an expert, with the additional pleasures of the scent of salt in the air and sunshine in which to bask in deck: quite delicious. The characters of both of the main protagonists emerged natura!!y as the story progresses and as they lead ex more about each other, helped additionally by the excellent performance of narrator Davis Bosco, whose reading was a pleasure to hear.
'No destination, no schedule, that's my plan,' Finn had stated, but not before a second in this new sailing mystery series by Charles Dougherty, I trust. A gentle, enjoyable thriller which has wetted my appetite for more. My thanks to the rights holder of Assassins and Liars, who, at my rquest, freely gifted me with a complimentary copy, via Audiobook Boom. Recommended, especially if you long to sail between the Caribbean islands. But pretty good for everyone who likes an intriguing thriller.
