Experience a bold take on this classic autobiography as it’s performed by Oscar-nominated Laurence Fishburne. In this searing classic autobiography, originally published in 1965, Malcolm X, the Muslim leader, firebrand, and Black empowerment activist, tells the extraordinary story of his life and the growth of the Human Rights movement. His fascinating perspective on the lies and limitations of the American dream and the inherent racism in a society that denies its non-White citizens the opportunity to dream, gives extraordinary insight into the most urgent issues of our own time.

Story
Guyanese intellectual Walter Rodney emerged as one of the leading thinkers and activists of the anticolonial revolution. In 1980, shortly after founding of the Working People's Alliance in Guyana, the 38-year-old Rodney would be assassinated. In his magnum opus, Rodney incisively argues that grasping "the great divergence" between the West and the rest can only be explained as the exploitation of the latter by the former. This meticulously researched analysis of the repercussions of European colonialism in Africa remains an indispensable study for grasping global inequality today.

Americans have built an empire on the idea of “race”, a falsehood that damages us all but falls most heavily on the bodies of Black women and men - bodies exploited through slavery and segregation and, today, threatened, locked up, and murdered out of all proportion. What is it like to inhabit a Black body and find a way to live within it? And how can we all honestly reckon with this fraught history and free ourselves from its burden? Between the World and Me is Ta-Nehisi Coates’ attempt to answer these questions in a letter to his adolescent son.

Publisher's Summary
In 2013 Assata Shakur, founding member of the Black Liberation Army, former Black Panther and godmother of Tupac Shakur, became the first ever woman to make the FBI's most wanted terrorist list.
Assata Shakur's trial and conviction for the murder of a white State Trooper in the spring of 1973 divided America. Her case quickly became emblematic of race relations and police brutality in the USA. While Assata's detractors continue to label her a ruthless killer, her defenders cite her as the victim of a systematic, racist campaign to criminalise and suppress Black nationalist organisations.
This intensely personal and political autobiography reveals a sensitive and gifted woman, far from the fearsome image of her that is projected by the powers that be. With wit and candor, Assata recounts the formative experiences that led her to embrace a life of activism. With pained awareness she portrays the strengths, weaknesses and eventual demise of Black and white revolutionary groups at the hands of the state.
A major contribution to the history of Black liberation, destined to take its place alongside The Autobiography of Malcolm X and the works of Maya Angelou. Foreword written by Angela Davis.

Everyone should read the story of Assata Shakur.
I was born in the early 60's and knew of most of the Black leaders of the movement. I heard nothing about Assata until my child mentioned her in 2015 - I think. I was disgusted with myself - as was my daughter - for not knowing anything about her. I was so happy to learn about her in her own words.
Nothing of her story surprised me. As I said, I grew up in these times. And it was well known how Black political activists were treated. It is still known how Blacks are treated in this country so none of this should surprise anyone.
I think this book should be required reading in every public school in America.
Everyone should read the story of Assata Shakur.

The real History not taught in school
For potential readers:
This moving autobiography provided a much needed history lesson. That era is so clouded in lies and one sided, obvious, racist write ups that I'm ashamed to be just now digesting it was. Many parents from that era were still living in in post-revolution underground mode. That's why they never shared the complete picture.
Notes:
1. Raw revolution through out the book, if you want to remain sleep, this book is NOT for you
2. If you want to keep your children sleep, you MUST ban this book immediately and keep the news and the mainstream newsfeeds feeding them. or better yet, no news. You must feed them only industry controlled programming.
3. Cursing through out the book. Extract lessons and teach from there.
4. The only question is what to do now that we're woke? Sleep seems so much more intoxicating and blissful. hmmm...
For the author, and movement:
a. Thanks sister Assata. Thank you so much.
b. This textbook on revolution provided the needed case studies of what to do and not to do.
c. Thanks for the low down on The Party. No one talks about it with anything other than either glossed over reverence or disdain. and even then, only highlights.

A must read for every black person!
(My goodread’s review)
I don’t think I’ve ever left a review on here before, but my God what a book this is!
It’s a must read for every black girl out there! Assata is a true goddess. Her fight for freedom from oppression will never ever go unnoticed. She has done well for the people.
In addition, her lyricism is as sweet as honey.
This is a 5 star book for sure!(I’m only rating it a 4.5 here, because I listened to it on audible and I would have preferred to hear her narrate her story herself. It doesn’t take away from the significance of the story, just a personal preference). As a racially conscious black girl, who considers herself to be an activist, I will be purchasing a physical copy of this to sit alongside my other “woke” books. I urge you to read this!

Those that inspire
The ones i recognize are hard to characterize but all their voices harmonize.
They are the ones in which rationalize and analyze,
seeking to organize in order to mobilize,
Fight for change that can modernize and equalize.
They are the ones who sought to decriminalize many whom are stigmatized those who were once colonized and yet continue to exist as a target to demonize and capitalize.
Those whom i recognize have the ability to empathize, There is no compromise as they live to civilize and humanize those who threaten a world in which my idols sought and seek to stabilize,
These are the ones i idolize, those you should recognize and familiarize as we live in a world in which the media seek to normalize, making us desensitize against the police that militarize as they legitimize their power to brutalize.
Some seek to destabilize in order to seek change to revolutionize.

Excellent book giving a real insight into Assata Shakur's life, her experiences of racism in the US and how she came to be the activist and revolutionary that she is. Amazing
I would give this book more stars if I could. The story was so intense and interesting, so many insightful moments, and the narration is just brilliant. This book is so much more than just an autobiography.

Brilliant
I loved the raw reality of Assata's journey. 2020 is still exposing the corruption inside the US political system, the police and media & the African American struggle for freedom. ACAB. FTP. FTTrumpanzees.

Everyone should hear this!
This book provides a stark reality for people of colour growing up in the 70s which unfortunately holds true today. Such an important, passionate book and brilliantly narrated.
