Story
Dan, Abby, and Jordan remain traumatized by the summer they shared in the Brookline asylum. Much as they'd love to move on, someone is determined to keep the terror alive, sending the teens photos of an old-timey carnival, with no note and no name. Finally, Dan receives a list of coordinates pointing to abandoned houses in the town near Brookline, and he is convinced that the only way to end this nightmare once and for all is to return to New Hampshire College and follow the trail.

Before Miss Peregrine gave them a home, the story of peculiars was written in the Tales. Wealthy cannibals who dine on the discarded limbs of peculiars. A fork-tongued princess. These are but a few of the truly brilliant stories in Tales of the Peculiar - the collection of fairy tales known to hide information about the peculiar world, including clues to the locations of time loops - first introduced by Ransom Riggs in his number-one best-selling Miss Peregrine's Peculiar Children series.

Story
In Beatrice Prior's dystopian Chicago, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue - Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is - she can't have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself.

Publisher's Summary
Once you get in, there's no getting out.
For 16-year-old Dan Crawford, a summer program for gifted students is the chance of a lifetime. No one else at his high school gets his weird fascinations with history and science, but at the New Hampshire College Prep program, such quirks are all but required.
Dan arrives to find that the usual summer housing has been closed, forcing students to stay in the crumbling Brookline dorm - formerly a psychiatric hospital. As Dan and his new friends, Abby and Jordan, start exploring Brookline's twisty halls and hidden basement, they uncover disturbing secrets about what really went on here - secrets that link Dan and his friends to the asylum's dark past. Because it turns out Brookline was no ordinary psych ward. And there are some secrets that refuse to stay buried.
This mind-bending listening experience blurs the lines between past and present, friendship and obsession, genius and insanity.

Fun & Scary-ish
Would you consider the audio edition of Asylum to be better than the print version?
More like a psychological thriller. Suspenseful. Is it really happening? Is it a dream? It keeps you in question. I think this story would be a quick read and great for high school, or college kids.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Dan's roomate. He went through a transformation of being meek little nerd, to dedicating himself to become stronger.
Have you listened to any of Michael Goldstrom’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
No.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The conversation that Dan's parents have about him and his past. It makes you wonder.

Creepy premis, poor execution
This did not read like a YA. The basic plot and writing style felt much more MG. The characters lacked depth and emotion, and despite the immature writing style, their dialogue somehow managed to come off rigid and adult like. Not teenagish. It actually FELT like an adult trying to write a YA book--one who'd never spent time around actual teens. Besides that, the plot twists were bland and predictable, and there were many, MANY, unfinished story points. So many, it made me wonder if they were put in play for the mere suspense factor, with no true thought with how they would resolve at the end.
I will not be reading the sequels.

This book REALLY chilled me down in the heat!
This book is so well written and the story is so well plotted that this was a joy to listen to❤ It has a unique vibe with a fantastically unique "worldsetting" I loved the way Madeleine used the Asylum and the way she described it! like the building in itself was a breathing and fully alive being, playing tricks on the characters' minds!
