It would be eight long years before she landed her iconic role on The Office, nearly a decade of frustration, rejection, and doubt. If only she’d had a handbook for the aspiring actor. Or, better yet, someone to show her the way. Jenna wants to be that person for you.

Bryan Cranston landed his first role at seven, when his father, a struggling actor and director, cast him in a United Way commercial. Soon Bryan was haunting the local movie theater, memorizing and reenacting favorite scenes with his older brother. Acting was clearly the boy's destiny - until one day his father disappeared. Suddenly destiny took a backseat to survival. Seeking something more stable, perhaps subconsciously trying to distance himself from his absent father, Cranston decided on a career in law enforcement.

On stage and screen, we know a great performance when we see it. But how do actors draw from their bodies and minds to turn their selves into art? What is the craft of being an authentic fake? More than a century ago, amid tsarist Russia’s crushing repression, one of the most talented actors ever, Konstantin Stanislavski, asked these very questions, reached deep into himself and emerged with an answer.

Here’s the thing about facial communication...your face speaks an emotional, cognitive, and emblematic language. Knowing how to speak this language fluently and authentically is a skill and often the difference between booking the on-camera job or not. Mastering how your face speaks to the camera starts here.

I’ve decided to go back through the syllabus of my theater training, and, pound for pound, I can tell you (with 20+ years of professional film, tv, and stage experience) this is the best book I’ve ever read (or heard) on the subject of acting.

There were some good take aways / nuggets however, I found some of the chapters confusing as it was listed for example as chapter 18 but then in the narration he stated a totally different chapter number. Also it was unfortunate that this book was more applicable for theater actors and I was looking for something for the actor in TV and film. Although I was able to use some of the information provided it really wasn’t what I was looking for and I found some of the information to be a bit dated. Thanks

Narration is annoying, please don't make announcer voice actors read books like this. have some longer phrases please with pitch; it's a book about theater. The performance does not reflect the authors voice when reading it at all. Does not entrance me, makes me feel like I'm studying, which I am.

My most recommended 'In-and-out of context' book
I have continued to read this book multiple times throughout my life and many times in between Make no mistake, the lessons are solid for any becoming performer. Yet, to my personal reflection, I find this book shares important beliefs and insights for those that drive imagination on whatever stage they find themselves on. Though somewhat dated in reference to plays and performances from the time period, the lessons are just as important.

Very practical tips for auditions, demystifying the process and taking off the pressure. Key takeaways: bring the best of yourself, work WITH them, rather than against, be open and giving, use love as your driving motivation in every scene, and seek the humour in every scene, no matter how dark it may seem.
