At least, Jason tries to be heroic, but it's hard to be good when all your powers are evil. He’ll face off against cannibals, cultists, wizards, monsters...and that’s just on the first day. Story
An inn is a place to rest, a place to talk and share stories, a place to find adventure, or a starting ground for quests and legends. It is in this world, at least. To Erin Solstice, an inn seems like a medieval relic from the past. But here she is, running from Goblins and trying to survive in a world full of monsters and magic. She’d be more excited about all of this if everything wasn’t trying to kill her. But an inn is what she’s found, and so that’s what she becomes; an innkeeper, who serves drinks to heroes and monsters. Mostly monsters. But it’s a living, right?

Publisher's Summary
Pain. Chaos. Happiness?
Dominic Hart was screwed.
Diagnosed with terminal cancer, no money for treatment, and an athletic scholarship hanging by a thread...he didn't have many options. But the university clinic had offered him a free video game. Some sort of "therapy", they said. A way to while away the hours until he kicked the bucket. Yay.
What Dom wasn't expecting was to get swindled by a surly casino owner right out of the gate. Or get dropped in a backwater hellhole voted the “number one worst starting location in Awaken Online". That might have been because a video game mafia controlled the city. Or maybe it was because even the plant life could kill you. Regardless, his shit luck had obviously tagged along for the ride.
But that's life. The odds are stacked in the house's favor, you're running out of chips, and you have to decide to hit or fold. For Dom, he decided to go all in. What did he really have to lose?
It's just his life and happiness hanging in the balance.

I want to follow Dom more than Jason now
I was hooked from the beginning. I love the bond and dynamic interactions of Wingman, Dom, and Adrian. I Doms character class makes this book really fun and interesting. It's a new approach to combat in Awaken Online that we haven't seen before. If you're a fan of Franks close quarters style of fighting you'll enjoy this. I was engaged by the story and deapth of the characters, especially Dom's guildmates that come from other Awaken Online books. I want to follow Dom on his adventures more than anyone in this series of books!

I love the book and was excited to listen to it once it came to audible but I couldn't even make it an hour because of the narrator.

One of the best
I've listened to every book in the Awaken Online series (all the side quests and the Flame spin off), and I think this is one of my favorites. What this guild ends up being is incredible, and if any of these books were to be turned into a TV series, I think Death & Taxes should be the main focus. The incredible potential for this story and how it'll end up tied into Jason and Finn's stories is something I can't wait to experience
To be fair, this story starts a little slowly, but the end is so great that it is entirely worth it.

I'm only into chapter 4 of this book, I've listened to all the other ones, but I can't take the narrator anymore 😭😭 please get someone else for the next one 🤦♂️🤦♂️ or give David some feedback on the way he's reading stuff. Every time he over-emphesaizes something I cringe. And why does he pronounce hurtle like that??? No one pronounces it HURT-TOLL 😭😭😭. I really hope I finish the rest of the book without rage quitting it.

I love The message behind Dom’s arc. It really spoke to me. I hope Travis comes across this review, so he can see me say thank you for making this. I made me laugh, cry, exclaim “that’s awesome!” And everything in between. The exact reasons I love this new weird genre. More than any other book I’ve read in the genre though, it gave me hope.

The best to date I love this series of books. My only problem with them is the over use of certain words and phrases. It can be a bit repetitive but this does not detract from the amazing story telling. This is by far the best book in the whole series.

Boring
Let's see...15 chapters in...3? 4? Plot events have happened. There's no context. No actual story. I don't see what this has to do with anything in the AO history. I mean, Finn was heavily involved in events. This guy is just some poor smuck who has had some bad luck. ...But...so what? Wheres the story of his rise to glory? Bagwell phoned this one in.

The best one yet!
Fantastic listen! Travis Bagwell was the topic in one of my uni classes last year. After my first listen I've been hooked on this new genre ever since, and Travis Bagwell is THE BEST!
Doing an English major means I have to read some heavy tomes. But when I get a chance this author is my escape, and this is possibly his best one yet. The main character is an "Arnie" type that drips masculinity in a highly positive way. The world is engaging and mixes up the established storyline nicely. The chaotic nature of the Jungle and supporting characters makes fun a really enjoyable read the whole way through.
How long till the movie franchise? 😉
