Publisher's Summary

Gary Jennings' exciting sequel to his best selling Aztec, vividly recreates a forgotten chapter of history. One generation after his people were brutally conquered and forced into subordination by the Spaniards, a proud young Aztec named Tenamáxtli courageously refuses to bow to his foreign rulers. Instead, driven by his dream to rebuild the Aztec Empire, Tenamáxtli secretly recruits an army to fight the seemingly invincible Spanish forces. Along the way he finds high adventure, passionate women, unlikely allies, and moments of genuine hope and bitter tragedy.

Disappointing

This is a sad follow-up to Aztec. The story feels jammed together, gets stuck on things that do not add to the story.
All of this could have been disguised by a good reader which this story does not have. In fact, I think the reading could be used as an example of "101 Things Reader Should Not Do".
James Olmos or. Jimmy Smits would have been great choices but then my Aunt Tillie would have been better.
Sad. Sadder still because I wasted money on the darn thing.

Not very captivating

The story, although extremely elinghtining of mexico's people and mexico's history, lacks the ability to captivate the readers attention for a very long time. very predictable. The un-abridged version probably better.

really enjoyed it

I read some negative reviews on here and was a little concerned. I read the first book twice and wanted to enjoy this one as well.
I thought it was excellent. I liked the reader, and the story. hopefully someone does the first book, I'd like to hear that.

This book is abridged

This book is Abridged. Way too short. Ends abruptly. And really is nowhere near as good as Gary Jennings first two Aztec books.

Bravo! Encore!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, Gary Jennings is a brilliant writer! I appreciate his rendition of Native Mexican History from the storied eyes of an indigenous character.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Vanessa, i won't spoil the story.

What about David Dukes’s performance did you like?

David Duke's Performance was a 10! Great narrator! Please do the complete Aztec series?

Aztec Autumn

Quite disappointing compared to the original book, Aztec; although it could be because this version is abridged.
I usually prefer unabridged versions. The plot on this seemed to jump around rather than flowing logically... there again, probably because it has been abridged.

Loved the paperback. HATED _this_ audio.

I have been a huge Gary Jennings fan for years. Spangle, The Journeyer, and Aztec were three books that I'll always enjoy for the wonder, historical context, and edgy writing style.

Even Aztec Autumn, which was not really written by Mr. Jennings himself but by a surrogate writer, was an excellent read on paperback.

Unfortunately, THIS book on audio is horrible. The narration was awful. And by "awful" I mean "AWFUL". The narrator could not pronounce any of the native names and simply butchered them. Not only did he butcher the words, but he also was inconsistent about the way he butchered them.

For example, the word "Michoacán", sounded like Mitchy-oh-kan at one time, and as My-cho-khan in others. I was so confused and frustrated within an hour that I simply could not finish the book. I tried approximately 4 times across the span of several months, but I just have not been able to finish the book on audio. Paperback yes, I've finished it, twice. But THIS book on audio I simply cannot.

Save your money/token. Don't get this book. Wait for another, better, audio recording (hopefully by a native speaker) before you try again.

Performance is wonderful

The story is a great historical fiction novel. The reader did outstanding job with difficult words. I hope Audible will produce his other three stories about Aztec. I own all his books in hard back. Just never got to read other then the first one.
